The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany), starting on 13 August 1961, the Wall completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin until government officials opened it in November 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and was completed in 1992. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the Wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany. In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that had marked East Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period.
Berlin (/bərˈlɪn/, German: [bɛɐ̯ˈliːn]) is the capital of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.5 million people, it is the second most populous city proper and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in northeastern Germany on the banks of Rivers Spree and Havel, it is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has about six million residents from over 180 nations. Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. Around one-third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.
First documented in the 13th century and situated at the crossing of two important historic trade routes, Berlin became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1417–1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and the Third Reich (1933–1945).Berlin in the 1920s was the third largest municipality in the world. After World War II, the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital of East Germany while West Berlin became a de facto West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989) and East Germany territory. Following German reunification in 1990, Berlin was once again designated as the capital of united Germany.

more: http://www.dw-world.de/english For 28 years, a nearly insurmountable barrier kept people from fleeing East Germany. But then, the dramatic night of November 9, 1989, saw the fall of the Wall that divided Germany. Today, it is difficult to imagine what was bitter reality just a few decades ago. For the first time, a realistic computer animation reveals the vast security system of Germany's inner border and the Berlin Wall, both of which were recreated virtually in the greatest detail. The animation is part of the DVD "Walled in! What the Cold War frontier in divided Germany was really like" which can be purchased at DW's online store http://store.dw-world.de.
1958-1963 As West Germany and West Berlin become more affluent, East Germans begin to flee their country for their more prosperous neighbor. Khrushchev demands that the British, French, and Americans leave West Berlin, but they decline and the opportunity for a peaceful resolution is dashed when the Soviets walk out on the Paris Summit of 1960 because of the U-2 incident. On the night of August 12, 1962, East German security forces begin to build the Berlin Wall. In response, a tense standoff between U.S. and Soviet forces ensues. In 1963, President Kennedy delivers his famous "I am a Berliner" speech. Interviews in Episode 9 include Anatoly Gribkov, Valentin Falin, Stefan Heym, Egon Bahr, Raymond L. Garthoff and Conrad Schumann.

The Berlin Wall, Berlin - Germany Travel Guide A glimpse into the history and impact of Berlin's Wall. Just a couple of years ago, this here was the no-man's land between East and West. Nowadays, it is hard to tell where the Wall was standing originally. But, when you take a close look on the ground, you can sometimes find those lines, those brick-walled lines, that indicate where the Wall was. We are now at the memorial site in the Bernauer Strasse with an original piece of the Wall around the corner, and this reminds us of the construction of the Wall in 1961, and the division of the city until 1989. So, I am looking to the other side now. this here is an art piece, It gives you an impression of how it was like to be divided. Because the Wall did not only separate a city, and a countr...

Hey guys! Thank you for tuning in. Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already! 😊 This is Part 2/2 of our Berlin trip. I've crammed 3 days in one video so there is a lot to see. On Tuesday we visited an aquarium and the AquaDom, a 25 m tall cylindrical acrylic glass aquarium with a built-in transparent elevator. We also went to the Natural History Museum. On Wednesday we rented some bikes. Berlin has a great infrastructure for bike riding so we had to use it. We biked to the Victory Column, through Tiergarten Park. We also went to the Brandenburg Gate and some other historical sites. On Thursday, our last day, we visited the Charlottenburg Palace and the Berlin Wall. I hope you've enjoyed these little trip vlogs. I will be getting back to my usual workout videos as soon as I can. See...

The Berlin Customs Wall was a ring wall around the historic city of Berlin, between 1737 and 1860; the wall itself had no defence function but was used to facilitate the levying of taxes on the import and export of goods which was the primary income of many cities at the time. ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- About the author(s): Daniel Chodowiecki (1726–1801) Alternative names Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki Description Polish-German painter and printmaker Date of birth/death 16 October 1726 7 February 1801 Location of birth/death Gdańsk Berlin Authority control VIAF: 59092320 ISNI: 0000 0001 2134 8231 ULAN: 500014861 LCCN: n50038187 NLA: 36058735 WorldCat License: Public domain Author(s): Daniel Chodowiecki ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- This channel is dedicated to make Wikipedi...
Listen to the full audiobook: http://hotaudiobook.com/mabk/30/en/B00NFVCEPU/book The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 to end all traffic between the city's two halves: the democratic west and the communist east. The iconic symbol of a divided Europe, the Wall became a focus of western political pressure on East Germany; as Ronald Reagan's famously said in a 1987 speech in Berlin, "mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" But as award-winning historian Mary Sarotte shows in The Collapse , the opening of the Wall on November 9, 1989 was not, as is commonly believed, the East German government's deliberate concession to outside influence. It was an accident. A carelessly worded memo written by mid-level bureaucrats, a bumbling press conference given by an inept member of the East German Politburo,...

Welcome to my island
But please don't you stay too long
I wouldn't want anyone to think
That something's going on
Toe the line
And you'll be fine
You'll see another day
Don't connect,
Don't reflect,
Just fetch your weekly pay
Oh sister don't you feel
What I know inside my bones
I'll meet you on the underground
And we'll make a call on the telephone
Chorus:
Berlin wall
Can you hear this call
For one world, one nation
Who can it be banging at my door
I can't trust anyone anymore
I drink my beer in a state of fear
Is tyher no salvation
Wire on the gate,
Barbs of hate
To separate one nation
Around your heart
A ring of steel
I can't get out
And I can't get in.
One for all, and all for one
Is the way it should be
Every river I know
Is dreaming of the sea
My body feels like a prison to me
I'd like to fly and touch you
With a sacred dream
Come on, mama, don't delay
I know you think I'm far away
I'm only looking for a sign --
Are you ready to cross the line?
