Ontology
Ontology is the philosophical study of the nature of being, becoming, existence, or reality, as well as the basic categories of being and their relations. Traditionally listed as a part of the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics, ontology often deals with questions concerning what entities exist or may be said to exist, and how such entities may be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences. Although ontology as a philosophical enterprise is highly theoretical, it also has practical application in information science and technology, such as ontology engineering.
Overview
In analytic philosophy, ontology deals with the determination whether categories of being are fundamental and discusses in what sense the items in those categories may be said to "be". It is the inquiry into being in so much as it is being ("being qua being"), or into beings insofar as they exist—and not insofar as (for instance) particular facts may be obtained about them or particular properties belong to them.

We can distinguish two families of approaches to the building of ontologies -- corresponding roughly to the contrast between 'neats' and 'scruffies' in artificial intelligence research. John Searle on Language & Social Ontology
In this talk, John Searle attempts to explain how human institutional facts are created and maintained by a specific type of linguistic representation (i.e. a status function declaration). This creates and maintains systems of deontic power: rights, duties, obligations and empowerments of various kinds. And these provide the glue that hold human society together. They do such by providing humans with desire independent reasons for action, that is, reasons for doing things that are independent of one's immediate inclinations. This talk was given at the University of Oslo in May 2011. I don't own it.

Feminist Ontology for the Twenty-first Century
What is a woman? What, if anything, do particular women have in common with one another? What differentiates women from other groups of beings? In this interview, Jennifer McWeeny describes how a new kind of feminist ontological project that she terms "topographies of flesh" can speak to these keystone feminist questions and others. She also discusses her comparative philosophical method, how she came to call herself a feminist, why she sees veganism as a feminist issue, and the need for creative feminism that goes beyond critique of dominant ontological paradigms. In this talk, John Searle attempts to explain how human institutional facts are created and maintained by a specific type of linguistic representation (i.e. a status function declaration). This creates and maintains systems of deontic power: rights, duties, obligations and empowerments of various kinds. And these provide the glue that hold human society together. They do such by providing humans with desire independent reasons for action, that is, reasons for doing things that are independent of one's immediate inclinations.
This talk was given at the University of Oslo in May 2011. I don't own it.
