Top-ranked Alabama is in the driver seat to make a return trip to the College Football Playoff, and possibly repeat as national champions. The Tigers (5-2, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) fired head coach Les Miles after a 2-2 start, but they are 3-0 under Ed Orgeron, and they are No. 13 in the first CFP rankings. They can tighten the race in the SEC West if they can upset the top-ranked Crimson Tide (8-0, 5-0). The key to this game will be whether Alabama can slow down Fournette like they did last year. The LSU star back is coming off a career game and he is the healthiest he has been all season. Look for Fournette to improve on last year's performance and make this a close one for the Tigers. At the end though, Bama and Jalen Hurts make enough plays to continue on their College Football Playoff march. Based purely on talent, with Ohio State and Clemson knocking on the door, these are the two best teams in college football. Alabama has played like it so far, and LSU has played like it ever since Ed Orgeron took over the reins. Blow off the 2-2 start, blow off the way the Tigers came really, really close to being 4-0 with Les Miles keeping his gig, and blow off the offensive struggles early on. This is a different LSU team now with a different attitude, a different starting quarterback, and the same original goal. LSU is absolutely still in the College Football Playoff hunt with Alabama this week, at Arkansas to follow, Florida after that, and at Texas A&M; to close. Win those four games, hope for another Auburn loss, get to the SEC championship, win it, and it’s off to the College Football Playoff. It’s just that easy. The Tigers have at least eight starters likely to go in the first four rounds of next year’s draft, and more NFL talent working around the veterans. Athleticism isn’t a problem, strength isn’t problem, and defense definitely not an issue, keeping everyone to 21 points or fewer thanks to one of the nation’s top run defenses. But Alabama has at least five starters who’ll go in the first round in the 2017 NFL Draft, and also with at least eight guys who’ll be taken in the first four rounds. And the Crimson Tide are No. 1 in the nation against the run. Even with all the playmakers and future multi-millionaires on both sides of the ball, the spotlight is all on Leonard Fournette vs. that amazing Bama run D that allowed 114 yards to Texas A&M; – the most it’s given up all year. After getting stuffed last year for 31 yards on just 19 carries – not his fault in any way – this is Fournette’s chance at redemption, and his shot to launch a real, live Heisman campaign. If LSU wins this, and Fournette goes off, he’s No. 1A in the hunt next to Lamar Jackson, but the game is obviously more important than that. For No. 7 to get moving, the Tiger offensive line has to come up with the game of its season, being even better than it was when LSU rumbled for 418 yards against Missouri, and ripped up Ole Miss for 311 yards. And, again, now it has a healthier Fournette ready to go. But the Alabama defense is rested, too. It struggled on the road against Ole Miss and Arkansas, but that was partly because the secondary got blown up up for 400 passing yards in shootouts. LSU isn’t going to do that. Turn the ball over against this Crimson Tide D, and it’ll turn the game around with a takeaway it’ll likely turn into points. If LSU has to try to throw to win, and the Bama pass rush is turned loose, good luck. The Tigers have no hope if it turns the ball over three times like they did against Ole Miss. But they won’t. This won’t be a defensive slugfest, but for the only time this year, the Alabama offense will be held in check for a full sixty minutes with the Tiger defensive front pressuring Jalen Hurts all game long. Fournette won’t go off, but he’ll be just effective enough to crank out the clock and help the LSU offense stay in control.
