South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

Now, Mponeng is fighting back by digging deeper than man has ever gone, towards an untapped gold reef worth $10 billion. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked...

In 1867, the first diamond discovered in South Africa, the Eureka Diamond, was found near Hopetown on the Orange River. Two years later, a much larger diamond known as the Star of South Africa was found in the same area, causing a diamond rush. This was soon eclipsed by the diamond rush to mine diamonds directly from kimberlite at Kimberley in 1871, although alluvial diamonds continued to be found in the Orange. Today, several commercial diamond mines operate on the last stretch of the river, as well as the beaches around its mouth. Diamond mines also operate on the middle stretch of the river. All the big diamond mines of South Africa lie to the north of the Orange River. After the first accidental discovery had drawn attention to the occurrence of diamond in South Africa, the four impor...

In the last few days, South Africa received two much welcomed reprieves. The historic scarcity of work opportunities, resultant chronic high unemployment coupled with apartheid-era laws sparked an entrepreneurial spirit among many South Africans as a means of survival. Today, within townships such as Alexandra and Kliptown, many residents engage in what’s called the ‘informal economy.’ At the South African Institute of Race Relations, a team of researchers examine evolving trends such as the informal job market. Researcher Boitumelo Sethlatswe provides an in depth look at this crucial segment of life in South Africa that’s under attack as the government considers licensing legislation.
South Africa's economy remained under pressure in the last quarter of 2014 and business debt levels also remained stressed. Data released by Experian on the country's Business Debt Index, shows 4 quarters of decline last year. The BDI declined to 0.20, from 0.35 in Quarter 3, which according to the authors of the index isn't good news. Angelo Coppola with the story.

When visiting South Africa the one absolute must item to try, unless you're vegan/vegetarian, is South African Braai. Similar to barbecue, but don't you dare call it that, it literally means 'grilled meat in Afrikaans. For fuel wood is used over gas and other forms of charcoal giving the meat an extra smokey flavor. Another feature that makes South African Braai unique is that most of the various kinds of meats are marinated prior to being grilled. The entire process, including the preparation, is very much a social affair. Be sure to try braai if you get the chance; however, remember not to call it barbecue because that's just a sauce ;) GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video...
Ask a South African to name just one dish that evokes the sometimes quirky fusion of indigenous, colonial and immigrant cultures behind this nation’s famous "rainbow cuisine", and, surely, bunny chow would be there near the tip of her tongue. A spicy curry in a large portion of hollowed-out white loaf, this Durban specialty comprises a filling imported by Indian slaves and their descendants, served in an edible vessel made of an Afrikaans staple, the two happily joined together by necessity. The festival is also a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance. Although there are endless activities that you can partake in, before embarking on a journey to this beautiful country, there are a few things to know to prepare you for the trip. Here are my top 5 tips on what to do in South Africa! 1) BE SAFE! Do not walk around at night. The crime rate in Cape Town is actually quite high so avoid putting yourself in compromising situations. In addition, if you’re a woman, this is incredibly important because the sexual assault and rape rates are also high so keep that in mind. Be safe. 2) GO ON A SAFARI! Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
