Considerado el maestro del decadentismo y principal precursor del simbolismo, es, en realidad, el único poeta francés que merece el epíteto de «impresionista» y, junto con Victor Hugo, el mayor poeta lírico francés del s. XIX. En 1851 su familia se instaló en París, donde Verlaine trabajó como escribiente en el ayuntamiento (1864). En 1866 publicó su primer libro, Poemas saturnianos, que revela la influencia de Baudelaire, al que siguieron Fiestas galantes (1869), en el que describe un universo irreal a lo Watteau, y La buena canción (1870).
Después de una crisis producida por el amor no correspondido que le inspiró su prima Élise Moncomble, halló una efímera estabilidad en su matrimonio con Mathilde Mauté (1870), disuelto a raíz de sus relaciones, a partir de 1871, con Arthur Rimbaud, con quien viajó a Bélgica y a Gran Bretaña (1872-1873). El 10 de julio de 1873, en Bruselas, hirió de bala a Rimbaud, quien le había amenazado con abandonarle. Condenado a dos años de prisión, salió de la cárcel después de recobrar la fe.
Su etapa de madurez se inicia con la publicación de Romanzas sin palabras (1874), que revela una poética nueva, basada en la música del verso, y expresa su desgarramiento, dividido entre Rimbaud y Mathilde. Tras una última riña con Rimbaud en Stuttgart, regresó a Gran Bretaña (1875), donde se dedicó a la enseñanza hasta que regresó a Francia (1877). Después de una recaída en el alcoholismo, volvió a Gran Bretaña con su alumno favorito, Lucien Létinois (1879-1880).
En 1881 publicó Cordura, poemario de inspiración religiosa, y en 1883, tras la muerte de Létinois, llevó en Coulommes una vida escandalosa. De este período data la publicación de Los poetas malditos (1884), en que dio a conocer a Rimbaud, Tristan Corbière y Stéphane Mallarmé, y Antaño y ahora (1884). Tras una nueva estancia en la cárcel por haber intentado estrangular a su madre hallándose bajo los efectos del alcohol, pasó a residir definitivamente en París (1885), donde fue a menudo hospitalizado.
Aparte de obras en prosa, como Mis hospitales (1892), de su producción de esta última etapa destacan algunas obras poéticas de tema religioso (Amor, 1888; Liturgias íntimas, 1892) y de tema erótico (Paralelamente, 1889; Mujeres, 1890; Canciones para ella, 1891; Odas en su honor, 1893; Elegías, 1893; En los limbos, 1894). En sus últimos años gozó de gran prestigio literario (dio conferencias en Bélgica y Gran Bretaña, fue elegido «Príncipe de los poetas» en 1894), lo que contrasta con la miseria y el estado de degradación en que vivía.

Paul-Marie Verlaine nació el 30 de marzo de 1844 en Metz (Francia). Era hijo de Elisa Dehée y de un capitán del ejército francés llamado Nicolas-Auguste Verlaine.
Estudió en el Liceo Bonaparte parisino. En sus tiempos de adolescente se enamoró de Elisa Moncomble, prima huérfana de Paul que creció al cuidado de su familia y que falleció a edad temprana.
En París trabajó brevemente como agente de seguros antes de dar inicio a la carrera de Derecho, que abandonó para vivir una existencia bohemia y compartir ansias literarias con poetas parnasianos como Leconte de Lisle y Louis Xavier de Ricard.
En 1870 contrajo matrimonio con Matilde Mauté de Fleurville, enlace roto tras su enamoramiento del joven poeta Arthur Rimbaud, quien le había remitido el poema “El Barco Ebrio”.
Ambos escritores se fugaron a Londres, capital inglesa en la que compartieron una pasional historia de amor con continuos encuentros y desencuentros.
Esta tormentosa relación junto a su vida bohemia, afición a la absenta y desequilibrio nervioso, terminó por mermar la salud de Verlaine.
En 1873 fue condenado a dos años de prisión tras disparar contra Rimbaud y herirle en una mano. En la cárcel escribió “Romanzas Sin Palabras” (1874).
Murió en París el 8 de enero de 1896. Tenía 41 años.
Su decadentista obra poética, influenciada en primera instancia por Charles Baudelaire, se significa por su exploración en la belleza del ritmo y la musicalidad del lenguaje, siendo figura prominente de la corriente simbolista, entre los que se encuentran también su amante Rimbaud y el poeta Stéphane Mallarmé.
Sus obras más importantes son el ensayo “Los Poetas Malditos” (1884), la autobiografía “Confesiones” (1895), y los libros poéticos “Poemas Saturnianos” (1866), “Las Fiestas Galantes” (1869), la citada “Romanzas Sin Palabras” (1874), “Sabiduría” (1890), libro en el cual retomaba sus perdidas creencias católicas, y “Antonio y Ahora” (1884).

Paul-Marie Verlaine (/vɛrˈlɛn/;French: [vɛʁlɛn]; 30 March 1844 – 8 January 1896) was a French poet associated with the Symbolist movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry.
Biography
Early life
Born in Metz, Verlaine was educated at the Lycée Impérial Bonaparte (now the Lycée Condorcet) in Paris and then took up a post in the civil service. He began writing poetry at an early age, and was initially influenced by the Parnassien movement and its leader, Leconte de Lisle. Verlaine's first published poem was published in 1863 in La Revue du progrès, a publication founded by poet Louis-Xavier de Ricard. Verlaine was a frequenter of the salon of the Marquise de Ricard (Louis-Xavier de Ricard's mother) at 10 Boulevard des Batignolles and other social venues, where he rubbed shoulders with prominent artistic figures of the day: Anatole France, Emmanuel Chabrier, inventor-poet and humorist Charles Cros, the cynical anti-bourgeois idealist Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Théodore de Banville, François Coppée, Jose-Maria de Heredia, Leconte de Lisle, Catulle Mendes and others. Verlaine's first published collection, Poèmes saturniens (1866), though adversely commented upon by Sainte-Beuve, established him as a poet of promise and originality.

Plot: In 1871, Paul Verlaine (1844-1896), an established poet, invites boy genius Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) to live with Paul and his young pregnant wife, Mathiltde, in her father's home in Paris. Rimbaud's uncouth behavior disrupts the household as well as the insular society of French poets, but Verlaine finds the youth invigorating. Stewed in absinthe and resentment, Verlaine abuses Mathiltde; he and Rimbaud become lovers and abandon her. There are reconciliations and partings with Mathiltde and partings and reconciliations with Rimbaud, until an 1873 incident with a pistol sends one of them to prison. Codas dramatize the poets' final meeting and last illnesses.

PAUL VERLAINE (1844-1896) Paul-Marie Verlaine nació el 30 de marzo de 1844 en Metz (Francia). Era hijo de Elisa Dehée y de un capitán del ejército francés llamado Nicolas-Auguste Verlaine. Estudió en el Liceo Bonaparte parisino. En sus tiempos de adolescente se enamoró de Elisa Moncomble, prima huérfana de Paul que creció al cuidado de su familia y que falleció a edad temprana. En 1881 publicó Cordura, poemario de inspiración religiosa, y en 1883, tras la muerte de Létinois, llevó en Coulommes una vida escandalosa. De este período data la publicación de Los poetas malditos (1884), en que dio a conocer a Rimbaud, Tristan Corbière y Stéphane Mallarmé, y Antaño y ahora (1884). Tras una nueva estancia en la cárcel por haber intentado estrangular a su madre hallándose bajo los efectos del alcohol, pasó a residir definitivamente en París (1885), donde fue a menudo hospitalizado.
Aparte de obras en prosa, como Mis hospitales (1892), de su producción de esta última etapa destacan algunas obras poéticas de tema religioso (Amor, 1888; Liturgias íntimas, 1892) y de tema erótico (Paralelamente, 1889; Mujeres, 1890; Canciones para ella, 1891; Odas en su honor, 1893; Elegías, 1893; En los limbos, 1894). En sus últimos años gozó de gran prestigio literario (dio conferencias en Bélgica y Gran Bretaña, fue elegido «Príncipe de los poetas» en 1894), lo que contrasta con la miseria y el estado de degradación en que vivía.
