I wonder sometimes Rimbaud's behavior is just a provincial a bit.
But he is not deny a genius and I like Rimbaud's poem.
His Vowel poem the best.
I think his all works are only enjoyed solve a word riddle.

Un poderoso drama que recrea la atormentada relación entre dos de los más grandes poetas franceses del siglo XIX: Arthur Rimbaud y Paul Verlaine
En 1871 Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio), de solo 16 años, es invitado a Paris por Verlaine, (David Thewlis), en ese tiempo un poeta muy reconocido.
Verlaine intenta integrar a Rimbaud con otros poetas de altura, pero Arthur es un joven con una personalidad extraña, altanero, grosero, desafiante, características que enamoran a Verlaine, aunque éste se encuentre casado y a punto de ser padre.
Verlaine es seducido por el joven Rimbaud, y juntos, huyen a Inglaterra y Bélgica, hasta el momento que un irracional Verlaine dispara contra Rimbaud.
Verlaine es encarcelado. En la cárcel se convierte al cristianismo, mientras Rimbaud sigue con su carrera poética. Una vez que Verlaine es liberado se reencuentran en Alemania para nunca más volverse a ver.
Rimbaud abandona la literatura y se marcha al continente africano, donde un tumor en una rodilla lo obliga a regresar a Francia, donde finalmente muere a los 37 años de edad.

well, lately i've been thinking a lot about Leonardo DiCaprio, about how much he used to be sooooo handsome before cutting his hair. Looking for an old movie, i've found "Total Eclipse" and i loved it! Mostly because i've always been interested in Decadent Art.
Besides, i already knew almost all the plot since i've studied Rimbaud. So this is dedicated to all of us poor students! :)
I felt the need of making this video because i hope there are going to be some more Total Eclipse vid in the future! I SO HOPE SO!
and YES! Paul verlaine is David Thewlis which is REMUS LUPIN, my dear harry potter fans!!! LOL for me it was kinda shocking at the beginning.
In the end of the vid there's a piece of the movie, one of my favourites, which didn't end up in the vid for "a lack of space". Damn it, sometimes Leonardo was so cute i couldn't cut the scene XD therefore, i didn't point at timing at all.
Also, since it's - uhm - a simple vid, not centered on an au-story nor mask, it took just 2 days, which is kinda a record for me!

Arthur Rimbaud
Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud (/ræmˈboʊ/ or /ˈræmboʊ/; French pronunciation: [aʁtyʁ ʁɛ̃bo] ; 20 October 1854 – 10 November 1891) was a French poet born in Charleville, Ardennes. He influenced modern literature and arts, and prefigured surrealism. He started writing poems at a very young age, while still in primary school, and stopped completely before he turned 21. He was mostly creative in his teens (17–20). The critic Cecil Arthur Hackett wrote that his "genius, its flowering, explosion and sudden extinction, still astonishes".
Rimbaud was known to have been a libertine and for being a restless soul. He traveled extensively on three continents before his death from cancer just after his thirty-seventh birthday.

Family and childhood (1854–1861)
Arthur Rimbaud was born in the provincial town of Charleville (now part of Charleville-Mézières) in the Ardennes département in northeastern France. He was the second child of Frédéric Rimbaud (7 October 1814 – 16 November 1878) and Marie Catherine Vitalie Cuif (10 March 1825 – 16 November 1907).

Looking for an old movie, i've found "Total Eclipse" and i loved it! Mostly because i've always been interested in Decadent Art. Besides, i already knew almost all the plot since i've studied Rimbaud. So this is dedicated to all of us poor students! :) I felt the need of making this video because i hope there are going to be some more Total Eclipse vid in the future! I SO HOPE SO! and YES! Paul verlaine is David Thewlis which is REMUS LUPIN, my dear harry potter fans!!! LOL for me it was kinda shocking at the beginning. In the end of the vid there's a piece of the movie, one of my favourites, which didn't end up in the vid for "a lack of space". Damn it, sometimes Leonardo was so cute i couldn't cut the scene XD therefore, i didn't point at timing at all. Un poderoso drama que recrea la atormentada relación entre dos de los más grandes poetas franceses del siglo XIX: Arthur Rimbaud y Paul Verlaine
En 1871 Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio), de solo 16 años, es invitado a Paris por Verlaine, (David Thewlis), en ese tiempo un poeta muy reconocido.
Verlaine intenta integrar a Rimbaud con otros poetas de altura, pero Arthur es un joven con una personalidad extraña, altanero, grosero, desafiante, características que enamoran a Verlaine, aunque éste se encuentre casado y a punto de ser padre.
Verlaine es seducido por el joven Rimbaud, y juntos, huyen a Inglaterra y Bélgica, hasta el momento que un irracional Verlaine dispara contra Rimbaud.
Verlaine es encarcelado. En la cárcel se convierte al cristianismo, mientras Rimbaud sigue con su carrera poética. Una vez que Verlaine es liberado se reencuentran en Alemania para nunca más volverse a ver.
Rimbaud abandona la literatura y se marcha al continente africano, donde un tumor en una rodilla lo obliga a regresar a Francia, donde finalmente muere a los 37 años de edad.

well, lately i've been thinking a lot about Leonardo DiCaprio, about how much he used to be sooooo handsome before cutting his hair. Looking for an old movie, i've found "Total Eclipse" and i loved it! Mostly because i've always been interested in Decadent Art.
Besides, i already knew almost all the plot since i've studied Rimbaud. So this is dedicated to all of us poor students! :)
I felt the need of making this video because i hope there are going to be some more Total Eclipse vid in the future! I SO HOPE SO!
and YES! Paul verlaine is David Thewlis which is REMUS LUPIN, my dear harry potter fans!!! LOL for me it was kinda shocking at the beginning.
In the end of the vid there's a piece of the movie, one of my favourites, which didn't end up in the vid for "a lack of space". Damn it, sometimes Leonardo was so cute i couldn't cut the scene XD therefore, i didn't point at timing at all.
Also, since it's - uhm - a simple vid, not centered on an au-story nor mask, it took just 2 days, which is kinda a record for me!

As I was going down impassive Rivers,
I no longer felt myself guided by haulers:
Yelping redskins had taken them as targets
And had nailed them naked to colored stakes.
I was indifferent to all crews,
The bearer of Flemish wheat or English cottons

The Rivers let me go where I wanted.
Into the furious lashing of the tides
More heedless than children's brains the other winter

Resembling actors of very ancient dramas,
The waves rolling far off their quivering of shutters!
I have dreamed of the green night with dazzled snows
A kiss slowly rising to the eyes of the sea,
The circulation of unknown saps,
And the yellow and blue awakening of singing phosphorous!
I followed during pregnant months the swell,
Like hysterical cows, in its assault on the reefs,
Without dreaming that the luminous feet of the Marys
Could constrain the snout of the wheezing Oceans!
I struck against, you know, unbelievable Floridas
Mingling with flowers panthers' eyes and human
Skin! Rainbows stretched like bridal reins
Under the horizon of the seas to greenish herds!
I have seen enormous swamps ferment, fish-traps
Where a whole Leviathan rots in the rushes!
Avalanches of water in the midst of a calm,
And the distances cataracting toward the abyss!
Glaciers, suns of silver, nacreous waves, skies of embers!
Hideous strands at the end of brown gulfs
Where giant serpents devoured by bedbugs
Fall down from gnarled trees with black scent!
I should have liked to show children those sunfish
Of the blue wave, the fish of gold, the singing fish.

Here's another poetry reading, recommended to me by my English Literature-prodigy brother. This poem was definitely the most fun one to read thus far, and it allowed me to read the stanzas with a bit more zeal than the previous two!

As I was going down impassive Rivers,
I no longer felt myself guided by haulers:
Yelping redskins had taken them as targets
And had nailed them naked to colored stakes.
I was indifferent to all crews,
The bearer of Flemish wheat or English cottons
When with my haulers this uproar stopped
The Rivers let me go where I wanted.
Into the furious lashing of the tides
More heedless than children's brains the other winter
I ran! And loosened Peninsulas
Have not undergone a more triumphant hubbub

Jean-Nicholas Arthur Rimbaud nació el 20 de octubre de 1854 en la localidad francesa de Charleville, ubicada en la región de las Ardenas.
Su padre Frederic era militar y su madre era una mujer de fuerte carácter llamada Vitalie Cuif, hija de unos terratenientes de Roche. Arthur tenía un hermano mayor, Frederic y dos hermanas menores, Vitalie e Isabelle. Sus padres se separaron cuando Rimbaud tenía seis años de edad. Dos años después comenzó a estudiar en el Instituto Rossat y escribió sus primeros trabajos literarios.
Espléndido estudiante, consiguió desde su infancia fenomenales calificaciones escolares y un buen número de premios poéticos.
A los quince años publicó sus primeros versos en revistas como “Le Moniteur de L’Enseignemente Secondaire” o “La Revue Pour Tous”.
En esa época conoció a una persona importante en su desarrollo personal, su profesor de retórica Georges Izambard, quien le inició en el conocimiento de varios autores franceses que influenciaron su proceder literario, entre ellos Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire o François Rabelais.
A los dieciséis años comenzó una vida aventurera que le convirtió en mito. Se marchó a París, pero fue detenido y encarcelado en la prisión de Mazas. Posteriormente volvió a dejar su hogar para viajar hasta Bruselas. Tras unos meses deambulando por tierra belga regresó a Charleville.
En 1871 se marchó otra vez a París y conoció a Paul Verlaine, un escritor al que le había enviado el poema “El Barco Ebrio (Le bâteau ivre)” (1871).
Verlaine, sorprendido gratamente por el talento de Rimbaud, le invitó a su hogar. Poco después se convertieron en amantes, viviendo un tormentoso romance en una escalada de drogas, alcohol y sexo.
Verlaine, que estaba casado con Mathilde Mauté, abandonó a su familia y se trasladó con su joven compañero a Inglaterra en el año 1872. Un año después, las continuas discusiones entre ambos fueron poco a poco deteriorando la relación. La culminación de este quebranto amoroso se produjo en Bruselas, ciudad en la que residían a partir del mes de julio de 1873.
Rimbaud quiso romper el vínculo sentimental y Verlaine le disparó, provocándole una herida en la mano. La sentencia posterior para Verlaine fue de dos años de prisión.
En este agitado período Arthur Rimbaud escribió su título más representativo, “Una Temporada En El Infierno (Une saison en enfer)” (1873).
En 1874 residió con el poeta Germain Nouveua y comenzó a escribir “Iluminaciones (Illuminations)”.
En el año 1875 Verlaine salió de la cárcel y se reconcilió con Arthur Rimbaud. La pareja decidió residir juntos en la ciudad alemana de Stuttgart. Su reencuentro fue un fracaso y las peleas y discusiones volvieron a repetirse.
El carácter inquieto y aventurero de Rimbaud le llevó hasta África en el año 1880, en donde traficó comercialmente (especialmente con armas) en Harrar, logrando un importante caudal monetario.
Su vida bohemia se acentuó, con borracheras, drogas y multitud de acompañantes sexuales, tanto hombres como mujeres.
En el año 1891 y tras la expansión de un tumor aparecido en la rodilla se le amputó una pierna, diagnosticándole cáncer de huesos. El 10 de noviembre de 1891, acompañado por su hermana más querida, Isabelle, Rimbaud falleció en la ciudad de Marsella. Tenía 37 años.
Su obra, caracterizada por el apego decadentista y el énfasis en el universo sensorial, es una de las cumbres del simbolismo francés, movimiento literario del que también participan Paul Verlaine o Stéphane Mallarmé.

A Season in Hell was written between April and August 1873 in London and France, when Rimbaud was 18, and in the throes of an intense, transgressive and destructive relationship with Verlaine. It is regarded as one of the most remarkable pieces of prose poetry ever written - a mixture of autobiography and enigmatic dream sequence in which Rimbaud looks back in despair over his life as a poet. Combining lucid self-appraisal with demented vision, it moves between hyper-realism and hallucinatory surrealism, blending sounds, colours, odours and intensely visual images. The 25 pages of A Season in Hell, here cut to a third of its length, are seen as both a testimony to and a tortured recantation of Rimbaud’s poetic credo, the ‘disordering of all the senses’.
Elizabeth Purnell’s soundtrack for the work includes composed music, field recordings and processed sound in a raw response to the words; she set the poems specifically for Wyatt, whose voice in its high, delicate register suggests a beyond-the-grave alter-ego to the young Rimbaud.

Though Robert Wyatt already built a reputation as a prog rock/experimental musician in the ’60s through his group Matching Mole, an accident in 1973 which left him paralysed from the waist down did not deter him from making music. For many music listeners, Wyatt came to the fore in the early ’80s with his cover of Elvis Costello’s anti-Falklands War anthem, Shipbuilding.

A Season in Hell was written between April and August 1873 in London and France, when Rimbaud was 18, and in the throes of an intense, transgressive and destructive relationship with Verlaine. It is regarded as one of the most remarkable pieces of prose poetry ever written - a mixture of autobiography and enigmatic dream sequence in which Rimbaud looks back in despair over his life as a poet. Combining lucid self-appraisal with demented vision, it moves between hyper-realism and hallucinatory surrealism, blending sounds, colours, odours and intensely visual images. The 25 pages of A Season in Hell, here cut to a third of its length, are seen as both a testimony to and a tortured recantation of Rimbaud’s poetic credo, the ‘disordering of all the senses’.
Elizabeth Purnell’s soundtrack for the work includes composed music, field recordings and processed sound in a raw response to the words; she set the poems specifically for Wyatt, whose voice in its high, delicate register suggests a beyond-the-grave alter-ego to the young Rimbaud.

Though Robert Wyatt already built a reputation as a prog rock/experimental musician in the ’60s through his group Matching Mole, an accident in 1973 which left him paralysed from the waist down did not deter him from making music. For many music listeners, Wyatt came to the fore in the early ’80s with his cover of Elvis Costello’s anti-Falklands War anthem, Shipbuilding.

Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud (English pronunciation: /ræmˈboʊ/ or /ˈræmboʊ/, French pronunciation: [aʁtyʁ ʁɛ̃bo]; 20 October 1854 -- 10 November 1891) was a French poet. Born in Charleville, Ardennes, he produced his best known works while still in his late teens—Victor Hugo described him at the time as "an infant Shakespeare"—and he gave up creative writing altogether before the age of 21. As part of the decadent movement, Rimbaud influenced modern literature, music and art. He was known to have been a libertine and a restless soul, travelling extensively on three continents before his death from cancer just after his 37th birthday.

Poet John Ashbery came to New York University's La Maison Française to read from his new book of translations of Rimbaud's 1886 prose poems " Illuminations" and to be presented with yet another honor, a medal of the Center for French Civilization and Culture. First he was interviewed by poet Ron Padgett who sits besides him in the video.. Next the prose poem "Après le Déluge" was read flawlessly in French by an NYU grad student whose name wasn't given. ( If anybody knows it, please send me a message.) After, John Ashbery presents his English translation, "After the Flood."
What happens after the flood? Here flood, as in biblical times, represents the purification of the human race. But after, sadly, Rimbaud shows it as returning to what it was about before: commerce, cruelty and cowardliness which grasps at false piety. The "precious stones " are buried in the earth again. It's so boring! ("C'est l'ennui".) He then calls for the floods to rise again, despite the sorrow and destruction they bring. Calling for the flood to return to alleviate boredom is a twisted idea, imagine presenting it in New Orleans! Some analysts explain the deluge metaphorically as the revolutionary spirt, which was how the word "déluge" was understood in Rimbaud's time.

You will find out things like how this poem may relate to the socialist revolutionary Communards of Paris and their destruction by the church, why Madame X set up a piano in the Alps, and that there really was a Hotel Splendide which was a luxury hotel for wealthy Brits which burned down. Rimbaud sent it to be rebuilt at the North Pole, changing fire to ice and darkness, and putting the English millionaires at a distance where he would have them. You will find out who Eucharis is and Bluebeard . I was fairly lost in two languages until I read this piece although I had studied the poem in school long ago. There was no discussion or Q & A after the presentation. This event took place May 12, 2011 in New York City. Thanks to John Ashbery for coming to read to us.
