Novosibirsk (Russian: Новосиби́рск; IPA: [nəvəsʲɪˈbʲirsk]) is the third most populous city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg and the most populous city in Asian Russia, with a population of 1,473,754 as of the 2010 Census. It is the administrative center of Novosibirsk Oblast as well as of the Siberian Federal District. The city is located in the southwestern part of Siberia on the banks of the Ob River adjacent to the Ob River Valley, near the large water reservoir formed by the dam of the Novosibirsk Hydro Power Plant, and occupies an area of 502.1 square kilometers (193.9 sq mi).
Novosibirsk, founded in 1893 at the future site of a Trans-Siberian Railway bridge crossing the great Siberian river of Ob, first received the name Novonikolayevsk (Новониколаевск), in honor both of Saint Nicholas and of the reigning Tsar Nicholas II in place of Krivoshchekovskaya village, which was founded in 1696. The bridge was completed in the spring of 1897, making the new settlement the regional transport hub. The importance of the city further increased with the completion of the Turkestan-Siberia Railway in the early 20th century. The new railway connected Novosibirsk to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea.
You know, cities are just like people: their backgrounds are different, their prospects are not the same, and in the course of time they change so much, you can barely recognize any traits from their early days when they reach a ripe old age. So, one has to be very perceptive and observant to discover a city's true character. Let us take a closer look at some of the historical facts that might give you a clearer picture of the city of Novosibirsk and its people. Firstly, Novosibirsk must be the only city in Russia that has been renamed so many times. The first settlement, which was established by railway workers in 1893, was called Krivoshekovo. This is a combination of two Russian words: "krivoy" (uneven) and "sheky" (cheeks), and the choice of this name suggests that the founders had a p...

Siberia in Russia is huge! The distances are so insane you really have no diea before you try to move from one city to the next. Doing so by train often takes at least one night. After a week or so on rail it was time to hit the road. The cities of Novosibirsk and Altai are 11 hours apart by car. That didn't stop me and a friend from attempting the drive on a whim with zero planing. As mentioned, in this part of Russia the distances are huge but the scenery is quite picturesque. The nature and wildlife is beautiful. Siberia was a very enjoyable part of the country and I would like to visit again. Preferably during the winter when the temperature goes down to -50 celsius!
After a long ride on the rails, we arrive to Tomsk. There we pay tribute to the Anton Chekov statue that was created in memory of his visit years ago. After a day of exploring the city, we then proceed to Novosibirsk during a celebration at the main square for the Children's games. In Russia the tradition has been to buy the apartments as “shell and core”, which typically means that the apartment comes bare without any finishing and kitchen equipment. One reason for this is the price - price is lower when the apartment is not finished and typically family and friends help the apartment owner to finalize the project. Another reason is that it is very important for Russians to make the renovation decisions themselves and therefore create an apartment that is different from the neighbours'. Novosibirsk Travel Video - If you want nightlife, restaurants with Las Vegas-style glitz or a choice of countless Irish pubs, Novosibirsk might be your Siberian dream come true. For anything else, consider skipping the place or departing the same evening on an overnight train. Novosibirsk hotels, already overpriced, have a weird rule preventing most from accepting foreigners unless prebooked through a tour agency. Despite its size, Novosibirsk has relatively little to see. It grew up in the 1890s around the Ob River bridge built for the trans- Siberian. Named Novo-Nikolaevsk until 1925 for the last tsar, it grew rapidly into Siberia's biggest metropolis, a key industrial and transport centre exploiting coalfields to the east and mineral deposits in the Urals.
