Script for Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated

Around the world every day, thousands if not millions of people give presentations. Some are great, and have a powerful impact on their audiences. Others...well, let's just say they're works in progress.
This is Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated
Meet Jim, an aspiring professional trying to make it in the world.
Jim used to give presentations like just about everyone else he knew. PowerPoint was his tool of choice.
He'd use it like an outline, with a header followed by bullet after bullet, and sometimes even sub-bullets!
When he wanted to be fancy, he'd add what usually turned out to be an ineffective chart or sometimes a table. And when Jim wanted to really spice things up, he'd add...yep...clip art.
Unfortunately, Jim's approach would often confuse and bore people. This was a problem because he had important things to say. And because it was dimming his prospects for success.
Fortunately, Jim learned a better way and didn't stay in the dark for long.
Perhaps most importantly, he now focuses on the story he wants to tell.
In doing so, he tries to follow a simple structure, with a clear beginning, middle, and end that links together his various points and builds to his conclusion.
When formulating his story, Jim uses a simple pad of paper or sicky notes. Staying low tech at this stage helps him think more creatively and stay outside the box.
He then considers what tools will help him best tell his story. Jim sometimes opts to use a whiteboard, flip charts, handouts, or even no props at all.
When it makes sense for him to use PowerPoint, he tries to remember the adage that sometimes "less is more."
He doesn't dumb down his presentations, but he does try to limit each slide to one key idea. Or, depending on the content, he sometimes builds an idea incrementally so it's easy to follow.
He looks for visual ways to tell his story, with minimal text, photos, and clear charts and graphs.

Sometimes he'll use quotes, but he tries to remember that people can't read his slides and truly listen at the same time.

His audiences are now much more engaged and better understand and remember his presentations.

Do you have to make presentations? Do you hate presentations? I like presentations, but one thing that you are probably maybe good at with presentations are making PowerPoint presentations, because you have visual aids to help you so you don't really have to talk as much, if you're nervous about talking. Presentation skills is something that you can work on. We have videos on www.engvid.com to help you with presentation skills. So, go and check those out for learning how to speak during presentations.
But what we're going to focus on today is the visual aspect of presentations, so your PowerPoint things. Some things to do, and some things not to do. So, here we are, presentation skills. The first thing and one of the things that makes these presentations so fun are pictures. But we have to be careful. The templates that you have already included in your presentation software, they're boring. People use them all the time. So, I suggest you try and download some other pictures to make your presentation more interesting. And with that, make sure that on one slide you have one image. Make it interesting.
Do not have a split screen. So, don't have two images on one slide. Do not have a collage, that's insane. A collage is many different small pictures on one screen. Even when I see a collage, there's a lot of collages coming out on Facebook now, and I'm like: "Too many pictures. Can't understand." Our brains just cannot comprehend all those pictures, especially when you're having the slide up for a short period of time. Don't make it like a photo album. Don't put millions and seven pictures, and... Keep it simple. Put a single image on each slide. Try and pick images that you actually like, and not too distracting. You don't want puppy dogs and things. Make something simple, but something that you like, and make sure it looks nice.
The next one you have to worry about is the lettering. So, the lettering, you also might know this as the font. So, font and lettering are the same. One thing that you do not want to do is have really fancy or beautiful lettering. Simply... The reason is some people can't read when the letters are fancy, especially if you are doing presentations for people whose... Do not have English as their first language, if you take the letters and you write them even cursive, a lot of people have problems reading cursive. So, I suggest you use something more traditional. There's lots of very easy-to-read fonts you can get from your... Whatever word processing you use. So, make it simple, easy to read.
Another problem that you might have is the script is too big or too small. So remember that when you're making your presentation, you're doing it probably on your laptop, or your desktop, or your iPad, or your phone, so the font or the lettering is going to be different than when you put it up on the projector. So if at all possible if you can, check it out before you do the presentation. Look at your... Hook up your laptop or whatever, and see if you can actually see it on the screen because the font is different. You might think that on your laptop it's a good size, but when it gets on the projection screen, it's tiny; or it takes up too much space and it's too big.
Next up are the words or the text. So, there's been studies done on how many lines of text a human can absorb or understand, and any more than six, you've lost the people. So, try and keep on each slide one very simple image, with very traditional clear text, and put only two or three lines on each slide. Don't put bullet points. If you have more than six lines or if you have bullet points, again, we just... We just can't remember them all. We just lose focus. We have something called too much information, too much info, TMI. "Too much information" means that if you have more than two or three lines, we're just not getting it. Our brain can't... We just can't learn it like you want us to.

Do you have to make a speech or do a presentation? Are you nervous? Do you need some help? I can help you. Hello. My name is Ronnie. I'm going to teach you a couple of tips and a couple of ways to help you when you have to do a scary presentation or speech.
When I was younger -- when I was really young, I had to do speeches every year in elementary school and high school -- I don't remember. I don't remember high school, okay? I do remember, specifically, in elementary school, every year, we had to do speeches. Guess what, ladies and gentlemen. You are looking at the grade 3 speech champion of Memorial school. Thank you. Thank you. Look what I am today.
So when I was in grade 3, I made the best speech in my class. I went on to do the speech in the auditorium or the gymnasium. I won first place. Oh, yeah. I won a book. I don't like books. I was like, "I got a book. Thanks." I was eight years old. I wrote a speech. I delivered the speech, and I won. I'm going to teach you what I know. This isn't a foolproof way, but this is how I to it. And maybe, this will work for you.
How to make a speech or presentation. Speeches and presentation are, of course, different. Speeches are more what you want to tell people about an interesting topic. And presentations are usually more work-based. But sometimes, they overlap. Sometimes, in schools, you have to do a speech, and also you will probably have to make a presentation about maybe a boring topic that the teacher gives you like World War II. How mundane.
So the very first thing that I'm going to tell you is how to actually form or make a decent speech. Sometimes, this is unavoidable. But maybe, if you can, choose a good or interesting topic. When I say interesting or good, the only person that needs to think this is interesting is you -- me -- you. If you have a wide-open topic, for example, your history teacher goes, "World War II." You go, "oh, god. Okay. Well, I know the history of World War II and the terrible Hitler, and all this stuff went down." So what you're going to do is you're going to try to choose a different angle, a different topic or a different way to present the information that no one's heard about before.
So if you have the opportunity to choose your own topic and the teacher doesn't give it to you, wide-open spaces. Choose what you like. What's your hobby? What's your passion? What do you like to talk about? Choose that -- bam. Make a really interesting presentation or speech. If you're excited about topic, then the other people will also feel you enthusiasm or feel your excitement, and it will be a good speech or presentation. So one, choose a good or interesting topic if you can.
No. 2, this is really important. If you are given a topic, I know it might be boring. Know your topic, or know your content. Nowadays, you can just go on the web, the good old website -- the Internet -- and you can blob the information off of Wikipedia or off of any kind of web page that you want, throw together the speech, stand up in front of everyone staring at you, yabber, yabber, yabber, jabber, jabber jabber. Then, at the end of it -- thank god it's over -- someone's going to ask you a question. "Oh, god. I don't know the answer" -- because you didn't research it. You just copied and pasted off the Internet. You can do that, whisk through it, ask a question, "I don't know." Speech is done. But if you have to do this for work, if your boss gives you a presentation or a speech to do for work, this is really important. Know your stuff. Know, maybe, what the people are going to ask you. Think of questions you would ask someone giving the same speech. As long as you know the information, your confidence is going to go like I this. Your nervousness or your anxiety is going to go like this. If you're confident, you know the topic, you know in and out everything about it, you're going to be the expert on it, and it's going to rock. Okay?

So, try and keep on each slide one very simple image, with very traditional clear text, and put only two or three lines on each slide. Don't put bullet points. If you have more than six lines or if you have bullet points, again, we just... We just can't remember them all. We just lose focus. We have something called too much information, too much info, TMI. "Too much information" means that if you have more than two or three lines, we're just not getting it. Our brain can't... We just can't learn it like you want us to. -

When I was younger -- when I was really young, I had to do speeches every year in elementary school and high school -- I don't remember. I don't remember high school, okay? I won a book. I don't like books. I was like, "I got a book. Thanks." I was eight years old. I wrote a speech. I delivered the speech, and I won. I'm going to teach you what I know. This isn't a foolproof way, but this is how I to it. And maybe, this will work for you. How to make a speech or presentation. Speeches and presentation are, of course, different. Speeches are more what you want to tell people about an interesting topic. And presentations are usually more work-based. But sometimes, they overlap. Sometimes, in schools, you have to do a speech, and also you will probably have to make a presentation about maybe a boring topic that the teacher gives you like World War II. How mundane. So the very first thing that I'm going to tell you is how to actually form or make a decent speech. Sometimes, this is unavoidable. But maybe, if you can, choose a good or interesting topic. When I say interesting or good, the only person that needs to think this is interesting is you -- me -- you. If you have a wide-open topic, for example, your history teacher goes, "World War II." You go, "oh, god. Okay. Well, I know the history of World War II and the terrible Hitler, and all this stuff went down." So what you're going to do is you're going to try to choose a different angle, a different topic or a different way to present the information that no one's heard about before. So if you have the opportunity to choose your own topic and the teacher doesn't give it to you, wide-open spaces. Choose what you like. What's your hobby? What's your passion? What do you like to talk about? Choose that -- bam. Make a really interesting presentation or speech. If you're excited about topic, then the other people will also feel you enthusiasm or feel your excitement, and it will be a good speech or presentation. So one, choose a good or interesting topic if you can. No. 2, this is really important. If you are given a topic, I know it might be boring. Know your topic, or know your content. Nowadays, you can just go on the web, the good old website -- the Internet -- and you can blob the information off of Wikipedia or off of any kind of web page that you want, throw together the speech, stand up in front of everyone staring at you, yabber, yabber, yabber, jabber, jabber jabber. Then, at the end of it -- thank god it's over -- someone's going to ask you a question. "Oh, god. I don't know the answer" -- because you didn't research it. You just copied and pasted off the Internet. You can do that, whisk through it, ask a question, "I don't know." Speech is done. But if you have to do this for work, if your boss gives you a presentation or a speech to do for work, this is really important. Know your stuff. Know, maybe, what the people are going to ask you. Think of questions you would ask someone giving the same speech. As long as you know the information, your confidence is going to go like I this. Your nervousness or your anxiety is going to go like this. If you're confident, you know the topic, you know in and out everything about it, you're going to be the expert on it, and it's going to rock. Okay? -

Around the world every day, thousands if not millions of people give presentations. Some are great, and have a powerful impact on their audiences. Others...well, let's just say they're works in progress.
This is Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated
Meet Jim, an aspiring professional trying to make it in the world.
Jim used to give presentations like just about everyone else he knew. PowerPoint was his tool of choice.
He'd use it like an outline, with a header followed by bullet after bullet, and sometimes even sub-bullets!
When he wanted to be fancy, he'd add what usually turned out to be an ineffective chart or sometimes a table. And when Jim wanted to really spice things up, he'd add...yep...clip art.
Unfortunately, Jim's approach would often confuse and bore people. This was a problem because he had important things to say. And because it was dimming his prospects for success.
Fortunately, Jim learned a better way and didn't stay in the dark for long.
Perhaps most importantly, he now focuses on the story he wants to tell.
In doing so, he tries to follow a simple structure, with a clear beginning, middle, and end that links together his various points and builds to his conclusion.
When formulating his story, Jim uses a simple pad of paper or sicky notes. Staying low tech at this stage helps him think more creatively and stay outside the box.
He then considers what tools will help him best tell his story. Jim sometimes opts to use a whiteboard, flip charts, handouts, or even no props at all.
When it makes sense for him to use PowerPoint, he tries to remember the adage that sometimes "less is more."
He doesn't dumb down his presentations, but he does try to limit each slide to one key idea. Or, depending on the content, he sometimes builds an idea incrementally so it's easy to follow.
He looks for visual ways to tell his story, with minimal text, photos, and clear charts and graphs.
Quote: "All the so-called "Secrets of success" will not work unless you do. -Unknown"
Sometimes he'll use quotes, but he tries to remember that people can't read his slides and truly listen at the same time.

Do you have to make presentations? Do you hate presentations? I like presentations, but one thing that you are probably maybe good at with presentations are making PowerPoint presentations, because you have visual aids to help you so you don't really have to talk as much, if you're nervous about talking. Presentation skills is something that you can work on. We have videos on www.engvid.com to help you with presentation skills. So, go and check those out for learning how to speak during presentations.
But what we're going to focus on today is the visual aspect of presentations, so your PowerPoint things. Some things to do, and some things not to do. So, here we are, presentation skills. The first thing and one of the things that makes these presentations so fun are pictures. But we have to be careful. The templates that you have already included in your presentation software, they're boring. People use them all the time. So, I suggest you try and download some other pictures to make your presentation more interesting. And with that, make sure that on one slide you have one image. Make it interesting.
Do not have a split screen. So, don't have two images on one slide. Do not have a collage, that's insane. A collage is many different small pictures on one screen. Even when I see a collage, there's a lot of collages coming out on Facebook now, and I'm like: "Too many pictures. Can't understand." Our brains just cannot comprehend all those pictures, especially when you're having the slide up for a short period of time. Don't make it like a photo album. Don't put millions and seven pictures, and... Keep it simple. Put a single image on each slide. Try and pick images that you actually like, and not too distracting. You don't want puppy dogs and things. Make something simple, but something that you like, and make sure it looks nice.
The next one you have to worry about is the lettering. So, the lettering, you also might know this as the font. So, font and lettering are the same. One thing that you do not want to do is have really fancy or beautiful lettering. Simply... The reason is some people can't read when the letters are fancy, especially if you are doing presentations for people whose... Do not have English as their first language, if you take the letters and you write them even cursive, a lot of people have problems reading cursive. So, I suggest you use something more traditional. There's lots of very easy-to-read fonts you can get from your... Whatever word processing you use. So, make it simple, easy to read.
Another problem that you might have is the script is too big or too small. So remember that when you're making your presentation, you're doing it probably on your laptop, or your desktop, or your iPad, or your phone, so the font or the lettering is going to be different than when you put it up on the projector. So if at all possible if you can, check it out before you do the presentation. Look at your... Hook up your laptop or whatever, and see if you can actually see it on the screen because the font is different. You might think that on your laptop it's a good size, but when it gets on the projection screen, it's tiny; or it takes up too much space and it's too big.

Do you have to make a speech or do a presentation? Are you nervous? Do you need some help? I can help you. Hello. My name is Ronnie. I'm going to teach you a couple of tips and a couple of ways to help you when you have to do a scary presentation or speech.
When I was younger -- when I was really young, I had to do speeches every year in elementary school and high school -- I don't remember. I don't remember high school, okay? I do remember, specifically, in elementary school, every year, we had to do speeches. Guess what, ladies and gentlemen. You are looking at the grade 3 speech champion of Memorial school. Thank you. Thank you. Look what I am today.
So when I was in grade 3, I made the best speech in my class. I went on to do the speech in the auditorium or the gymnasium. I won first place. Oh, yeah. I won a book. I don't like books. I was like, "I got a book. Thanks." I was eight years old. I wrote a speech. I delivered the speech, and I won. I'm going to teach you what I know. This isn't a foolproof way, but this is how I to it. And maybe, this will work for you.
How to make a speech or presentation. Speeches and presentation are, of course, different. Speeches are more what you want to tell people about an interesting topic. And presentations are usually more work-based. But sometimes, they overlap. Sometimes, in schools, you have to do a speech, and also you will probably have to make a presentation about maybe a boring topic that the teacher gives you like World War II. How mundane.
So the very first thing that I'm going to tell you is how to actually form or make a decent speech. Sometimes, this is unavoidable. But maybe, if you can, choose a good or interesting topic. When I say interesting or good, the only person that needs to think this is interesting is you -- me -- you. If you have a wide-open topic, for example, your history teacher goes, "World War II." You go, "oh, god. Okay. Well, I know the history of World War II and the terrible Hitler, and all this stuff went down." So what you're going to do is you're going to try to choose a different angle, a different topic or a different way to present the information that no one's heard about before.
So if you have the opportunity to choose your own topic and the teacher doesn't give it to you, wide-open spaces. Choose what you like. What's your hobby? What's your passion? What do you like to talk about? Choose that -- bam. Make a really interesting presentation or speech. If you're excited about topic, then the other people will also feel you enthusiasm or feel your excitement, and it will be a good speech or presentation. So one, choose a good or interesting topic if you can.
No. 2, this is really important. If you are given a topic, I know it might be boring. Know your topic, or know your content. Nowadays, you can just go on the web, the good old website -- the Internet -- and you can blob the information off of Wikipedia or off of any kind of web page that you want, throw together the speech, stand up in front of everyone staring at you, yabber, yabber, yabber, jabber, jabber jabber. Then, at the end of it -- thank god it's over -- someone's going to ask you a question. "Oh, god. I don't know the answer" -- because you didn't research it. You just copied and pasted off the Internet. You can do that, whisk through it, ask a question, "I don't know." Speech is done. But if you have to do this for work, if your boss gives you a presentation or a speech to do for work, this is really important. Know your stuff. Know, maybe, what the people are going to ask you. Think of questions you would ask someone giving the same speech. As long as you know the information, your confidence is going to go like I this. Your nervousness or your anxiety is going to go like this. If you're confident, you know the topic, you know in and out everything about it, you're going to be the expert on it, and it's going to rock. Okay?

This video will help you to build up skills to give a good presentation with simple tips and tricks.
Some people live for making presentations; others consider it their worst nightmare. It could be five people in a boardroom or 500 in the audience, but if you are the presenter the spotlight is on you. You'll either be the hero or the goat.
No need to panic. Here are five ways to help make your presentation astounding and enjoy the opportunity to bask in the limelight.
1. Give it Focus
No one is impressed by a presentation that rambles. Rambling happens when the speaker is both self-indulgent and unorganized. Your purpose and prose must be specifically directed to interests of your listeners or they will mentally shut you down. Even if you hit upon a topic of interest, you will lose them quickly if they can't follow the logic of your ideas. Outline the structure of your presentation in a way that people can follow easily. Research your audience to make sure the topic is truly of interest. Promoting the benefits of beef at a vegetarian conference will likely empty your venue no matter how strong your passion for steak.
2. Tell Compelling Stories
There must be a reason you are presenting to these people. Most likely you want them to take action of some kind. Maybe you want them to write you a check, get involved in an activity, or to make something happen in their own lives. They won't likely take action just because you tell them to do so. You need to connect with them emotionally and inspire them to change behavior. Stories do more for emotional connection than any other speech technique. The more personal and authentic, the more powerful the response you'll receive. Learn how to construct stories that excite, motivate and compel people to action. Most importantly, make sure your stories havehumor and Aha! moments to make them memorable.
3. Give an Entertaining Performance
Not every presenter has to be an actor or comedian, but no one wants to listen to someone drone on in dull monotone. There are powerful dynamics in movement and vocal inflections that will help your listeners feel your passion and energy. Give them an awesome experience. Take the time to create a script and memorize it so you own the material. You don't have to know it word for word but you should be able to clearly articulate the key points without your notes. Then you need to rehearse... a lot. As painful as it might be, watch yourself on video and work to remove Uhhs, Ummsand physical tics so you appear polished and comfortable. Find a friend with a performance background to coach you so your diction is clear, you project emotion, and you connect with your eyes. Make your audience knows they are worth your effort.
4. Use Media Only to Enhance
PowerPoint, visuals and video are powerful presentation tools when used correctly. But they can be disastrous distractions when misused. They should never replace you as the provider of expertise. Don't ever let your audience feel they would have been better off if you had just emailed them the deck. Keep your PowerPoint to a few words and never read from the screen in the presentation. Ask yourself if a slide or video is truly necessary before adding anything. Visuals are good for making an emotional connection only if they are relevant and required, otherwise best to just leave the projector off and focus more on your storytelling and performance skills.
