# 10 Wood Apple
To many of us Westerners, the Wood Apple looks completely unfamiliar. It kind of looks like a wooden coconut filled with strange looking pulp. Although they’re pretty much non-existent in the States, in Sri Lanka they’re as abundant as any other innocuous fruit. The wood apple has an outer exterior so hard it has to be cracked open with a small hammer!
# 9 Salak
The Salak is also called the snake fruit, for obvious reasons. Personally, I think it looks a lot like a dragon egg. The fruit has a scaley and prickly outside that makes it look and feel like an inedible cactus. Just like the main character in a teen movie, when you peel off it’s hard exterior on the inside is a very sweet and nearly addictive fruit. It’s a loved delicacy in the regions its native too but die hard Snakefruit fans have to be careful not to overindulge. Eating too much of it can give you a pretty painful bout of constipation.
# 8 Dragon Fruit
These strikingly vibrant fruit have a completely unique look and taste. Their fiery and otherworldly appearance earned them the nickname “Dragon fruit”. They may not be in your local wal-mart but you should definitely try to get your hands on one of these if you can. The fruit looks kind of like a bowl of cookies and cream but the flavor is described as a combination between a watermelon, a kiwi, and a pear.

These cute fruits look like they fell straight from the sky. Starfruits are popular not only because of the fact that they look exactly like a five-pointed star, but because they’re delicious too! They have a sweet plum-like flavor and you can eat them whole! Fun for friends, family, and the casual star-eating blackhole you have over.

The Sugar Apple is also known as The Sweetsop and is native to Pakistan, India, and the Philippines. The fruit looks more like a fleshy green pinecone than a sweet snack, which makes it even more surprising. When cracked open it reveals a sweet white fleshy inside with a sweet fragrance. And it tastes like custard! Custard that grows on trees? Count me in.

The Puhala Tree Seed Pod doesn’t resemble anything edible from the outside. It kind of just looks like a large seed hanging from a tree. When taken apart though, it looks even stranger and more interesting. A half opened Puhala seed pod looks like a slow motion explosion.Each little segment on the outside has a wedge shaped fruit that extends all the way to the core. The fruit has a sweet taste and is an essential food for the Micronesians where it is native to. The fibers of the plant can even be turned into dental floss!

The Noni is a fruit that goes by many names. It’s also known as the Indian Mulberry, the Cheese fruit, and the Vomit Fruit. Yes, Vomit Fruit. This weird looks like an unpleasant cocoon for some weird caterpillar. If you’re worried about feeling artificial for judging this fruit’s appearance, don’t worry it has nothing going for it on the inside either. The noni gives off a cheesy-pukey smell that is already off putting for most people but if you still want to eat it you’ll get a nice bitter taste and almost no nutritional value. Eat up!
# 3 African Horned Cucumber
This isn’t your average cucumber. The African Horned cucumber has a uniquely bumpy, yellow exterior and a green fleshy inside that gives it the appearance of something extraterrestrial. Don’t let its spiky armor fool you, it’s actually super sweet! The taste has been described as a cross between melon, cucumber, lime, and banana. If you think this fruit is completely alien, so did a bunch of other people. The fruit was actually featured in an episode of star trek as a melon from another planet. Set phasers to yum.
# 2 Chinese Artichokes
These things look more like a squirmy pile of grub worms that will come alive any second and wreak havoc, but they’re actually a bunch of fruits called Chinese Artichokes. Despite their strange appearance they’re actually easy to grow and have a very mild, nutty flavor. Chinese and Japanese people use them sometimes use them as light garnishes in salad but most of the time they’re pickled. Anyone up for some pickled worm fruits?
# 1 Buddha’s Hand
This lemon sprouting out a bunch of curly tendrils is a fruit called Buddha’s Hand. I didn’t know there was a Buddha with a bunch of tentacles instead of fingers, but hey. The fruit actually has very little in terms of edible flesh. When you cut it open it’s almost completely rind. Despite that, the stuff goes for about 24 dollars a pound. People mainly use it to add zest to their food and drinks, and some use the lavender-like scent to perfume their clothes or houses. So make sure you rub your creepy lemon tentacle thing on all your new clothes for that fresh clean smell.

Strange Fruit
"Strange Fruit" is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday, who first sang and recorded it in 1939. Written by teacher Abel Meeropol as a poem and published in 1937, it protested American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans. Such lynchings had reached a peak in the South at the turn of the century, but continued there and in other regions of the United States. Meeropol set it to music and, with his wife and the singer Laura Duncan, performed it as a protest song in New York venues in the late 1930s, including Madison Square Garden.
The song continues to be covered by numerous artists, and has inspired novels, other poems, and other creative works. In 1978, Holiday's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Poem and song
"Strange Fruit" was originated as a poem written by American writer, teacher and songwriter Abel Meeropol under his pseudonym Lewis Allan, as a protest against lynchings. In the poem, Meeropol expressed his horror at lynchings, inspired by Lawrence Beitler's photograph of the 1930 lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana. He published the poem under the title "Bitter Fruit" in 1937 in The New York Teacher, a union magazine. Though Meeropol had asked others (notably Earl Robinson) to set his poems to music, he set "Strange Fruit" to music himself. His protest song gained a certain success in and around New York. Meeropol, his wife, and black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at Madison Square Garden.

Nina Simone
Nina Simone (/ˈniːnə sᵻˈmoʊn/; born Eunice Kathleen Waymon; February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist who worked in a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop.
Born in North Carolina, the sixth child of a preacher, Simone aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of her supporters in Tryon, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York but was unable to continue because of the high fees. She was later denied a scholarship to study at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, despite a well-received audition. Simone became fully convinced her rejection had been entirely due to her race, a statement that has been a matter of controversy.
To make a living, Simone chose to play "cocktail piano" at a night club in Atlantic City, where she was told she had to sing to her own accompaniment, effectively launching her career as a jazz vocalist. She recorded more than forty albums, mostly between 1958, when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue, and 1974, and had a hit in the United States in 1958 with "I Loves You, Porgy".

Annie Lennox
Annie Lennox, OBE (born 25 December 1954), born Ann Lennox, is a Scottish singer, songwriter, political activist and philanthropist. After achieving moderate success in the late 1970s as part of the new wave band The Tourists, she and fellow musician David A. Stewart went on to achieve major international success in the 1980s as Eurythmics. With a total of eight Brit Awards, including Best British Female Artist six times, Lennox has won more than any other female artist. She has also been named the "Brits Champion of Champions".
Lennox embarked on a solo career in 1992 with her debut album, Diva, which produced several hit singles including "Why" and "Walking on Broken Glass". To date, she has released six solo studio albums and a compilation album, The Annie Lennox Collection (2009). Aside from her eight Brit Awards, she has also collected four Grammy Awards and an MTV Video Music Award. In 2002, Lennox received a Billboard Century Award; the highest accolade from Billboard Magazine. In 2004, she won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Into the West", written for the soundtrack to the feature film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The Salak is also called the snake fruit, for obvious reasons. Personally, I think it looks a lot like a dragon egg. The fruit has a scaley and prickly outside that makes it look and feel like an inedible cactus. Just like the main character in a teen movie, when you peel off it’s hard exterior on the inside is a very sweet and nearly addictive fruit. It’s a loved delicacy in the regions its native too but die hard Snakefruit fans have to be careful not to overindulge. Eating too much of it can give you a pretty painful bout of constipation.
# 8 Dragon Fruit
These strikingly vibrant fruit have a completely unique look and taste. Their fiery and otherworldly appearance earned them the nickname “Dragon fruit”. They may not be in your local wal-mart but you should definitely try to get your hands on one of these if you can. The fruit looks kind of like a bowl of cookies and cream but the flavor is described as a combination between a watermelon, a kiwi, and a pear.

A half opened Puhala seed pod looks like a slow motion explosion.Each little segment on the outside has a wedge shaped fruit that extends all the way to the core. The fruit has a sweet taste and is an essential food for the Micronesians where it is native to. The fibers of the plant can even be turned into dental floss!

The Noni is a fruit that goes by many names. It’s also known as the Indian Mulberry, the Cheese fruit, and the Vomit Fruit. Yes, Vomit Fruit. This weird looks like an unpleasant cocoon for some weird caterpillar. If you’re worried about feeling artificial for judging this fruit’s appearance, don’t worry it has nothing going for it on the inside either. The noni gives off a cheesy-pukey smell that is already off putting for most people but if you still want to eat it you’ll get a nice bitter taste and almost no nutritional value. Eat up!

This isn’t your average cucumber. The African Horned cucumber has a uniquely bumpy, yellow exterior and a green fleshy inside that gives it the appearance of something extraterrestrial. Don’t let its spiky armor fool you, it’s actually super sweet! The taste has been described as a cross between melon, cucumber, lime, and banana. If you think this fruit is completely alien, so did a bunch of other people. The fruit was actually featured in an episode of star trek as a melon from another planet. Set phasers to yum.

These things look more like a squirmy pile of grub worms that will come alive any second and wreak havoc, but they’re actually a bunch of fruits called Chinese Artichokes. Despite their strange appearance they’re actually easy to grow and have a very mild, nutty flavor. Chinese and Japanese people use them sometimes use them as light garnishes in salad but most of the time they’re pickled. Anyone up for some pickled worm fruits?

This lemon sprouting out a bunch of curly tendrils is a fruit called Buddha’s Hand. I didn’t know there was a Buddha with a bunch of tentacles instead of fingers, but hey. The fruit actually has very little in terms of edible flesh. When you cut it open it’s almost completely rind. Despite that, the stuff goes for about 24 dollars a pound. People mainly use it to add zest to their food and drinks, and some use the lavender-like scent to perfume their clothes or houses. So make sure you rub your creepy lemon tentacle thing on all your new clothes for that fresh clean smell.

# 10 Wood Apple
To many of us Westerners, the Wood Apple looks completely unfamiliar. It kind of looks like a wooden coconut filled with strange looking pulp. Although they’re pretty much non-existent in the States, in Sri Lanka they’re as abundant as any other innocuous fruit. The wood apple has an outer exterior so hard it has to be cracked open with a small hammer!
# 9 Salak
The Salak is also called the snake fruit, for obvious reasons. Personally, I think it looks a lot like a dragon egg. The fruit has a scaley and prickly outside that makes it look and feel like an inedible cactus. Just like the main character in a teen movie, when you peel off it’s hard exterior on the inside is a very sweet and nearly addictive fruit. It’s a loved delicacy in the regions its native too but die hard Snakefruit fans have to be careful not to overindulge. Eating too much of it can give you a pretty painful bout of constipation.
# 8 Dragon Fruit
These strikingly vibrant fruit have a completely unique look and taste. Their fiery and otherworldly appearance earned them the nickname “Dragon fruit”. They may not be in your local wal-mart but you should definitely try to get your hands on one of these if you can. The fruit looks kind of like a bowl of cookies and cream but the flavor is described as a combination between a watermelon, a kiwi, and a pear.

On the way back from a mission, Josh, Yoko and Brett can't believe how hungry they are -- so they decide to land on a nearby planet to check out the local cuisine. Unfortunately, when they get there, they find that the planet, with its lush, tropical landscape, is void of any restaurants. As Yoko and Brett are about to leave, Josh spots a tree bearing an abundance of unusual-looking fruit. Venue: University College Falmouth/Dartington College of Arts. "Exploited, plundered, assaulted and unknown, this anonymous mass is called... O'Povo (The people)" This is a piece of devised theatre about the sugar plantation slave trade which combines a modern sugar trade office with the life of slaves in the plantations. We use alot of symbolism and intense imagery. The paper trail at the end was inspired by a slave called Priscilla who left a paper trail wherever she went so she could be traced through history. The laptop at the beginning is displaying footage of the company digging to gather the soil that was then used in the piece. On the way back from a mission, Josh, Yoko and Brett can't believe how hungry they are -- so they decide to land on a nearby planet to check out the local cuisine. Unfortunately, when they get there, they find that the planet, with its lush, tropical landscape, is void of any restaurants. As Yoko and Brett are about to leave, Josh spots a tree bearing an abundance of unusual-looking fruit. Brett warns him not to eat it: "Who knows what effect alien fruit will have on the human digestive system?" But Josh isn't worried -- after all, a herd of freaky aliens across the valley seem to be eating it without any problem. Josh gorges himself. Upon returning to Galaxy High, Josh is pleased to learn that after many attempts, Toby has finally agreed to go on a date with him. But then something strange starts to happen. In the days leading up to the date, Josh begins to undergo some bizarre physical changes (his skin starts to turn red; a stem emerges from the top of his head; seeds begin shooting out of his ears). As much as he doesn't want to admit it, he realizes he's turning into a giant version of the fruit he ate earlier! With Toby already growing suspicious of his odd behavior, and not wanting to blow the upcoming date, Josh decides to head back to the planet where he became affected to desperately seek a remedy. Unfortunately, he finds himself on the run from a herd of hungry aliens who, seeing him as mother of all fruit, would like nothing more than to eat him for dinner. Luckily, Yoko, Brett and Fluffy figure out what's happening and set out to help their friend. Can the four of them fight off the ravenous aliens and turn Josh back to his regular self before it's too late? In a b-story, Josh finally gets a date with Toby.

On the way back from a mission, Josh, Yoko and Brett can't believe how hungry they are -- so they decide to land on a nearby planet to check out the local cuisine. Unfortunately, when they get there, they find that the planet, with its lush, tropical landscape, is void of any restaurants. As Yoko and Brett are about to leave, Josh spots a tree bearing an abundance of unusual-looking fruit. Brett warns him not to eat it: "Who knows what effect alien fruit will have on the human digestive system?" But Josh isn't worried -- after all, a herd of freaky aliens across the valley seem to be eating it without any problem. Josh gorges himself. Upon returning to Galaxy High, Josh is pleased to learn that after many attempts, Toby has finally agreed to go on a date with him. But then something strange starts to happen. In the days leading up to the date, Josh begins to undergo some bizarre physical changes (his skin starts to turn red; a stem emerges from the top of his head; seeds begin shooting out of his ears). As much as he doesn't want to admit it, he realizes he's turning into a giant version of the fruit he ate earlier! With Toby already growing suspicious of his odd behavior, and not wanting to blow the upcoming date, Josh decides to head back to the planet where he became affected to desperately seek a remedy. Unfortunately, he finds himself on the run from a herd of hungry aliens who, seeing him as mother of all fruit, would like nothing more than to eat him for dinner. Luckily, Yoko, Brett and Fluffy figure out what's happening and set out to help their friend. Can the four of them fight off the ravenous aliens and turn Josh back to his regular self before it's too late? In a b-story, Josh finally gets a date with Toby.

This is a piece of devised theatre about the sugar plantation slave trade which combines a modern sugar trade office with the life of slaves in the plantations. We use alot of symbolism and intense imagery. The paper trail at the end was inspired by a slave called Priscilla who left a paper trail wherever she went so she could be traced through history. The laptop at the beginning is displaying footage of the company digging to gather the soil that was then used in the piece.
Capoeira:
Afro-Brazilian art form which combines martial arts, music, and dance created in Brazil by slaves from Africa. Some were forced to work on sugar and tobacco plantations. The slave trade has not gone it has just changed tactic.
