Roberto Perez, Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor homered in the third inning and reliever Andrew Miller threw a season-high 40 pitches in getting six key mid-game outs as the Indians beat Boston, 5-4, in Game 1 of the American League Division Series at Progressive Field. Miller relieved Bauer in the fifth inning and threw two scoreless innings for the win. The 6-7 lefty had not entered a game that early since 2013 when he pitched for the Red Sox. Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen worked the final 2 1/3 innings against Boston's MVP-filled lineup. There were some bumps along the way. Shaw allowed a leadoff homer to Brock Holt in the eighth to make it a one-run game. Allen relieved with one out and allowed a double to David Ortiz, but retired the next two batters to end the threat. In the ninth, Allen struck out three of the four batters he faced to make his first postseason save a memorable one. It was Allen's first five-out save of the season. It was the Indians' first postseason win since they beat Boston in Game 4 of the 2007 ALCS. The Red Sox, under current Tribe manager Terry Francona, rallied to beat the Indians in seven games that year. Boston took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Hanley Ramirez double to score Dustin Pedroia from second. Holt was originally called safe at home on the same hit, but the Indians challenged and the call was overturned. Replays showed that Perez tagged Holt as he slid past him at the plate. Lonnie Chisenhall made it 1-1 with a single in the second off Rick Porcello, Boston's 22-game winner. Jose Ramirez, who opened the inning with a double, scored as Chisenhall took second on the throw. The Red Sox challenged Chisenhall's safe call at second and the call was overturned. Bauer, handed a 1-1 tie, promptly lost it as he allowed a leadoff homer to No.9 hitter Andrew Benintendi in the third. Benintendi, a rookie, hit a 3-1 pitch into the right field seats for a 2-1 lead. The Indians then unleashed the kind of postseason power no one has seen in Cleveland since the golden years of the 1990s. It started with Perez, who hit a 3-2 pitch from Porcello into the right-field seats. It made him the first Indian to homer in his first postseason plate appearance. After Carlos Santana grounded out, Kipnis and Lindor hit consecutive homers for a 4-2 lead. It was the first time the Indians have hit three postseason homers in the same inning since Mark Whiten, Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome homered in the fifth inning of Game 3 of the 1998 ALCS against the Yankees. While Perez showed patience against Porcello, Kipnis and Lindor were aggressive. Lindor hit an 0-1 pitch and Kipnis hit a 1-0 pitch. But no lead seemed safe Friday night. Bauer pitched around a one-out double by Ramirez in the fourth, but gave up another leadoff homer in the fifth. Sandy Leon, the No.8 hitter, was down in the count 0-2, but worked it full before homering deep into the seats in right center to cut the Tribe's lead to 4-3. For Leon and Benintendi, it was their first postseason homers. Bauer retired the next two batters, but manager Terry Francona had seen enough. He called for Miller, the reliever for all innings. Miller allowed a double to Brock Holt and walked Mookie Betts before striking out Ortiz to end the inning. It was now officially a "bullpen game," regardless of how many pitches it took for Miller and then Cody Allen to get the needed outs. "We were trying to win the game tonight," said Terry Francona. "We'll try to win the game tomorrow. I told Klubes (Corey Kluber) he's on a tight 165 to 170 (pitches) tomorrow. (Laughter) ... Those guys did a heck of a job." Kipnis made it 5-3 with a single in the fifth. Perez opened the inning with a single off Porcello. He tagged and advanced to second on Santana's fly ball to the track in left. Kipnis made Perez's aggressive baserunning pay off as he greeted lefty Drew Pomeranz with a single through the middle. Mike Napoli followed with a drive into the left field corner that would have easily scored Kipnis, but the ball bounced off the railing on top of the wall and was called a ground rule double. Chisenhall, with Kipnis on third and Napoli on second, struck out to end the inning. Bauer, who is scheduled to start Game 4 on short rest, allowed three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter. Porcello, who came into the game with a 10-4 record against the Indians, allowed five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
