Lights, car, action: Queanbeyan's first ever drive-in movies ready for showtime

It's almost show time for Queanbeyan's first ever drive in movies.

Organiser Kyol Booth-Hunt is bringing back the popular date-night haunt of yesteryear — the first of its kind for Queanbeyan — with the first screening kicking off on October 22.

The movies will be projected onto a giant inflatable screen on the main arena at Queanbeyan Showground.

"[The screen] is the length of an articulated bus — a stretchy bus — and the height of about three storeys, so it's quite large," Booth-Hunt said.

"We've got a laser projector down the front so it's brighter and clearer — it's exactly like you'd be in the cinema only you're sitting in your own car."

And far from the old days where you hung a speaker through the car window, patrons can connect to the sound through the FM radio in their own car.

The arena fits up to 300 cars, and the windy weather shouldn't cause any issues — the screen can handle up to 55km/h winds.

It will be the third drive-in cinema for Canberra, albeit the only one still running. Starlight in Watson closed in 1993 — although the sign still remains — and Sundown at Narrabundah closed in 1984.

Movies will run monthly, with an earlier family screening and a later show for the adults, and will usually be themed depending on the time of year.

First up will be an early Halloween scare-fest with a screening of Hotel Transylvania for the kids at 6.30pm, followed by Nightmare on Elm Street at 9.30pm.

The following month on December 17 will be all about Christmas, with The Polar Express and Fred Claus.

While you watch the movies from inside your car, there's lots to get you out of it before the movie starts. There will be food available on the night from Pizza Capers and Kransky Brothers, plus popcorn, chocolate kebabs and coffees, and kids can enjoy a jumping castle.
