Sport Club do Recife (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈspɔɾti ˈklub du ʁeˈsifi], (known as Sport and Sport Recife, abbreviated as SCR) is a Brazilian sports club, located in the city of Recife, in the state of Pernambuco. It was founded on May 13, 1905, by Guilherme de Aquino Fonseca, who lived for many years in England, where he studied at Cambridge University.

In football, the club has won six CBD/CBF titles, including three national and three regional. Its greatest glories are the Brazilian Championship 1987 and Brazil Cup 2008.

In addition to professional football, the club also participates in women's football and Olympic sports, such as rowing, swimming, hockey, basketball, futsal, volleyball, table tennis, taekwondo, judo and athletics.

It has a historic rivalry with the Náutico, where the confrontation between the two is known as the Clássico dos Clássicos, this being the third oldest in the country's derby, with Santa Cruz, which is called Clássico das Multidões, and with América-PE, with which it duels in Clássico dos Campeões.

Copa do Brasil

The Copa do Brasil (English: Brazil Cup) is a knockout football competition played by 86 teams, representing all 26 Brazilian states plus the Federal District. The Copa do Brasil is an opportunity for teams from smaller states to play against the big teams and episodes of giant-killing have happened at a regular rate throughout the competition's history. It is currently sponsored by Continental AG and is thus currently known as the Copa Continental Pneus do Brasil for sponsorship reasons. It is the Brazilian domestic cup and the Brazilian equivalent of the FA Cup, Taça de Portugal, Copa del Rey, Coupe de France, Coppa Italia, DFB-Pokal, and Copa Argentina, among others.

From 2001 to 2012, the Copa do Brasil was played in the first half of the year and in those seasons, due to the busy schedule in the first half of the year in Brazil, teams playing in the Copa Libertadores de América were not allowed to participate in the Copa do Brasil in the same year.

Since 2013, the tournament has run from March to November. Teams that contest the Copa Libertadores de América join the Copa do Brasil directly in Round of 16. Also, the best 8 teams from the previous year's Campeonato Brasileiro Série A eliminated up to the third round qualify for Copa Sudamericana.

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈɡɾẽmju ˌfutʃˈbɔw ˌpoɾtw ɐlɛˈɡɾẽsi]), commonly known as Grêmio, is a Brazilian professional football club based in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. It plays in the Campeonato Gaúcho, the state of Rio Grande do Sul's premier state league, as well as the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system.

Grêmio was founded by English and German immigrants on 15 September 1903. Major titles captured by Grêmio include one Intercontinental Cup, two Copa Libertadores de América, two Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and four Copa do Brasil. Grêmio plays in a tricolor (blue, black and white) striped shirt, black shorts and white socks, as first kit.

History

The beginning

On September 7, 1903 Brazil's first football team, Rio Grande, played an exhibition match in Porto Alegre. An entrepreneur from Sorocaba, São Paulo named Cândido Dias was besotted with the sport and went to the ground to watch the match. During the match, the ball deflated. As the only owner of a football in Porto Alegre, he lent his ball to the players, and the match resumed. After the match, he talked to the players about how to found a football club. On September 15, 1903, 32 people, including Cândido Dias, met at Salão Grau restaurant in the city and founded Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense. Sport (UK) or sports (US) are all forms of usually competitive physical activity or games which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators. Usually the contest or game is between two sides, each attempting to exceed the other. Some sports allow a tie game; others provide tie-breaking methods, to ensure one winner and one loser. A number of such two-sided contests may be arranged in a tournament producing a champion. Many sports leagues make an annual champion by arranging games in a regular sports season, followed in some cases by playoffs. Hundreds of sports exist, from those between single contestants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals. In certain sports such as racing, many contestants may compete, each against all with one winner.

Sport is generally recognised as activities which are based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity, with the largest major competitions such as the Olympic Games admitting only sports meeting this definition, and other organisations such as the Council of Europe using definitions precluding activities without a physical element from classification as sports. However, a number of competitive, but non-physical, activities claim recognition as mind sports. The International Olympic Committee (through ARISF) recognises both chess and bridge as bona fide sports, and SportAccord, the international sports federation association, recognises five non-physical sports, although limits the number of mind games which can be admitted as sports.
