Alan Jay Lerner (August 31, 1918 – June 14, 1986) was an American lyricist and librettist. In collaboration with Frederick Loewe, and later Burton Lane, he created some of the world's most popular and enduring works of musical theatre for both the stage and on film. He won three Tony Awards and three Academy Awards, among other honors.
Born in New York City, he was the son of Edith Adelson Lerner and Joseph Jay Lerner, whose brother, Samuel Alexander Lerner, was founder and owner of the Lerner Stores, a chain of dress shops. One of Lerner's cousins was the radio comedian/television game show panelist Henry Morgan. Lerner was educated at Bedales School in England, The Choate School (now Choate Rosemary Hall) in Wallingford, Connecticut, (where he wrote "The Choate Marching Song") and Harvard. He attended both Camp Androscoggin and Camp Greylock. At both Choate and Harvard, Lerner was a classmate of John F. Kennedy; at Choate they had worked together on the yearbook staff. Like Cole Porter at Yale and Richard Rodgers at Columbia, his career in musical theater began with his collegiate contributions, in Lerner's case to the annual Harvard Hasty Pudding musicals. During the summers of 1936 and 1937, Lerner studied music composition at Juilliard. While attending Harvard, he lost his sight in his left eye due to an accident in the boxing ring. In 1957, Lerner and Leonard Bernstein, another of Lerner's college classmates, collaborated on "Lonely Men of Harvard," a tongue-in-cheek salute to their alma mater.

Was Alan Jay Lerner a personal friend? Em wants to know. John Cullum raves about Lerner's creativity -- Alan's energy, perseverance, and amazing, un-ceasing work he did on re-writes. Though they were not "buddies," Alan's focus on him, and what Alan demanded from him as a actor,. changed the direction of John's career, and affects him even now.

Ben Bagley chose from a surprisingly small number of sources for his album of the lesser-known songs of Alan Jay Lerner. Of the 22 tracks on the expanded CD version (the original LP had only 14), seven come from the unsuccessful 1945 Lerner and Loewe musical The Day Before Spring, which is nearly the entire score; six come from the unsuccessful 1948 Weill and Lerner musical Love Life, and four come from the successful 1951 Lerner and Lane movie musical Royal Wedding. There is some funny material here, notably "Economics" from Love Life, and some charming material, too, including "You Haven't Changed at All" from The Day Before Spring. But there are no real discoveries that rank with Lerner's better-known songs. In addition to such familiar Revisited stalwarts as Blossom Dearie and Dorothy ...
Another song from the great Kurt Weill / Alan Jay Lerner score "Love Life", from a complete live broadcast, "I'm Your Man". A skewering of the ethics of American business it of course applies oh so well to politicians, one in particular prominent at the moment comes to mind. Cleaned and remastered by Tormented Artist Ink Studios (me). See also "Economics" from the same performance.

Lerner and Loewe were the team of lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe, known primarily for the music and lyrics of some of Broadway's most successful musical shows, including My Fair Lady, Camelot, and Brigadoon. Most of the Beautiful Romantic Music Videos that I have uploaded (around 1000) reflect a more perfect time or Worldview than our time. This was a time when love was real & people cared for each other better than now. It was not a perfect time at all but reflected a world that still in some ways adhered to a Christian Worldview. Compare much of the music today with that of the 50's & 60’s (& before) & note the lack of happiness & true love rampant among most of today’s life. The despair & unhappiness of today can be traced directly to our departure...

REFRAIN
