Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines is an American scheduled airline based in Seattle, Washington. The airline was founded as McGee Airways in 1932, offering flights from Anchorage, Alaska. Today, Alaska has flights to more than one hundred destinations in the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. The airline is a major air carrier and, along with its sister airline Horizon Air, is part of the Alaska Air Group. The airline has been ranked by J. D. Power and Associates as having the highest customer satisfaction of the traditional airlines for eight consecutive years.

The airline operates its largest hub at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (known as Sea-Tac). Although most of its revenue and traffic comes from locations outside of Alaska, the airline plays a major role in air transportation in the state. It operates many flights linking small towns to major transportation hubs and carries more passengers between Alaska and the contiguous United States than any other airline.

Alaska Air Group

Alaska Air Group Inc. is an airline holding company based in SeaTac, Washington. It owns two certificated airlines operating in the United States, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. It was formed in 1985 and acquired Horizon Air and Jet America Airlines the next year. Jet America Airlines was merged into Alaska Airlines in 1987.

Alaska Air Group subsidiaries had 14,710 employees in 2007, 14,143 in 2008 and 12,440 in 2009. At December 31, 2011, Alaska Air Group has 12,806 employees (9,640 at Alaska Airlines and 3,166 at Horizon Air), compared to 12,039 (9,013 at Alaska Airlines and 3,202 at Horizon Air) at December 31, 2010. Alaska Airlines operates only U.S. built Boeing aircraft with up to 172 seats while Horizon operates only Canadian built Bombardier Aerospace planes with up to 76 seats.

In 2011, Alaska Air Group, replaced the AMR Corporation in the Dow Jones Transportation Average.

Fleet

As of December 2011, Alaska Airlines' fleet consisted of 117 Boeing 737 jet aircraft while Horizon Air's fleet consisted of 48 Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft which is the largest and fastest member of the DHC-8 Dash 8 family. The Alaska Airlines fleet includes Boeing 737-400, 737-700, 737-800, 737-900 and 737-900ER aircraft.

Alaska (ⁱ/əˈlæskə/) is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Bordering the state to the east are the Canadian territory of Yukon and the Canadian province of British Columbia; to the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. To the west and south is the Pacific Ocean, with Russia (specifically, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Kamchatka Krai) farther west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 3rd least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's residents (estimated at 738,432 by the Census Bureau in 2015) live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance. Tourism and military bases are also a significant part of the economy.

Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km²). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.

Virgin America

Virgin America, Inc. (NASDAQ: VA) is a United States-based airline that began service on August 8, 2007. The airline's stated aim is to provide low-fare, high-quality service for "long-haul point-to-point service between major metropolitan cities on the Eastern and West Coast seaboards."San Francisco International Airport is Virgin America's main hub, but the airline also has focus city hubs at Los Angeles International Airport and Dallas Love Field. Virgin America's frequent flyer program Elevate provides award flights and other benefits to frequent fliers.

Virgin America, though the brainchild of British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, is a U.S. airline. By law, no more than 25% of a U.S. airline may be owned by foreign interests and must be under the "actual control" of U.S. citizens; VAI Partners owns 75% of the capital stock; the remaining 25% of the company is owned by Virgin Group, which also licenses the Virgin brand to the airline.

Virgin America, headquartered in Burlingame, California in the San Francisco Bay Area, is separate from and as such is under no obligation to work with any companies that share the Virgin brand name. However, Virgin America partners with many of the other Virgin-branded airlines and other Virgin Group brands.
