Imagine you're at the drive-in, watching a war picture, and James Cagney pulls up in the space next to you.
That's what happens in this memorable scene from WHITE HEAT (1949). Cody Jarrett (Cagney), on the lam with Ma Jarrett (Margaret Wycherly) and his wife, Verna (Virginia Mayo), after shooting a police detective, eludes the cop in hot pursuit by making a quick right turn into the San-Val drive-in as the police siren recedes into the distance.
The theatre's marquee touts a double feature of SOUTH OF ST. LOUIS (1949) and SIREN OF ATLANTIS (1949), but the movie actually seen on the screen as Cody and Co. settle in to discuss their plans is TASK FORCE (1949), starring Gary Cooper and Jane Wyatt.

It is a 1945 U.S. Navy documentary film about the epic story of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin. The whole film was shot in color!
Historical Background / Context:
The USS Franklin (CV-13), nicknamed "Big Ben," was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War 2 for the United States Navy, and the fifth US Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in January 1944, she served in several campaigns in the Pacific War, earning four battle stars. She was badly damaged by a Japanese air raid in March 1945, with the loss of over 800 of her crew, becoming the most heavily damaged United States carrier to survive the war. (Movie footage of the actual attack was included in the 1949 film Task Force starring Gary Cooper.)
During combat the USS Franklin was struck by two armor piercing bombs dropped by a Japanese Zero aircraft. At least one penetrated the flight deck, setting off a series of explosions that crippled the ship. Despite terrible fires, the crew managed to hold on and fought desperately to keep the ship afloat. The USS Santa Fe (CL-60) aided the ship and provided fire suppression. Eventually the ship was saved, towed to Pearl Harbor by the USS Pittsburgh (CA-72) and returned to New York harbor under its own power.
The USS Franklin was under repair during the rest of the war. She was decommissioned in 1947. While in reserve, she was reclassified as an attack carrier (CVA), then an antisubmarine carrier (CVS), and finally an aircraft transport (AVT), but was never modernized and never saw active service again. She was sold for scrap in 1966.

This historic U.S. Navy film was made in the wake of the disastrous air attack and fire aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin in 1945, specifically to provide naval ship architects insight into the structural damage endured by the ship during the incident. According to a truncated card at the head of the film, this forensic examination of the damage was made in hopes that future carriers might be made more resistant to damage.
USS Franklin (CV/CVA/CVS-13, AVT-8), nicknamed "Big Ben," was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy, and the fifth US Navy ship to bear the name. Task Force (film)
Task Force (1949) is a war film filmed in black-and-white with some Technicolor sequences about the development of U.S. aircraft carriers from the USS Langley (CV-1) to the USS Franklin (CV-13). Although Robert Montgomery was originally considered for the leading role, the film stars Gary Cooper, Jane Wyatt, Walter Brennan, Wayne Morris, Julie London and Jack Holt. Task Force was the only film Gary Cooper and Jane Wyatt made together, and was the last of the eight films Cooper and Walter Brennan made together. The U.S. Navy provided complete support in not only loaning naval vessels and facilities, but also allowed the use of archival footage of the development of naval air power.
Plot
As a 1917 graduate of the Naval Academy, Naval Aviator Jonathan L. "Scotty" Scott (Gary Cooper) spends 28 years, from 1921 to 1949, promoting U.S. Naval Aviation and the power of the aircraft carrier. During that period, he antagonizes powerful people in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Congress, and marries Mary Morgan (Jane Wyatt), the widow of a fellow flier who died in a crash during a carrier takeoff aboard the USS Langley. Throughout, Scott has the help and friendship of his mentor and superior officer, Pete Richard (Walter Brennan).

Task Force (1949)
PlotOn the day of his retirement, Rear Admiral Jonathan L. Scott reflects on his role in introducing aircraft carriers to the U.S. Navy. After World War I, there was a general downsizing of the military. There were only limited opportunities to create a carrier-bound air capability. The aircraft were not designed specifically for landing on a flat top and several death occur during training. Over the years however, Scott is one of several men who pursue their dream of aircraft carriers and aircraft specifically designed for that purpose. Their worth is proved in World War II at the Battle of Midway and throughout the war.

Historical Background / Context:
The USS Franklin (CV-13), nicknamed "Big Ben," was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War 2 for the United States Navy, and the fifth US Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in January 1944, she served in several campaigns in the Pacific War, earning four battle stars. She was badly damaged by a Japanese air raid in March 1945, with the loss of over 800 of her crew, becoming the most heavily damaged United States carrier to survive the war. (Movie footage of the actual attack was included in the 1949 film Task Force starring Gary Cooper.)
During combat the USS Franklin was struck by two armor piercing bombs dropped by a Japanese Zero aircraft. At least one penetrated the flight deck, setting off a series of explosions that crippled the ship. Despite terrible fires, the crew managed to hold on and fought desperately to keep the ship afloat. The USS Santa Fe (CL-60) aided the ship and provided fire suppression. Eventually the ship was saved, towed to Pearl Harbor by the USS Pittsburgh (CA-72) and returned to New York harbor under its own power.
The USS Franklin was under repair during the rest of the war. She was decommissioned in 1947. While in reserve, she was reclassified as an attack carrier (CVA), then an antisubmarine carrier (CVS), and finally an aircraft transport (AVT), but was never modernized and never saw active service again.
