The Himalayas, or Himalaya, literally, "abode of the snow", is a mountain range in Asia separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
The Himalayan range is home to the planet's highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest. The Himalayas include over a hundred mountains exceeding 7,200 metres (23,600 ft) in elevation. By contrast, the highest peak outside Asia -- Aconcagua, in the Andes -- is 6,961 metres (22,838 ft) tall. The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures of South Asia. Many Himalayan peaks are sacred in both Buddhism and Hinduism.
Besides the Greater Himalayas of these high peaks there are parallel lower ranges. The first foothills, reaching about a thousand meters along the northern edge of the plains, are called the Sivalik Hills or Sub-Himalayan Range. Further north is a higher range reaching two to three thousand meters known as the Lower Himalayan or Mahabharat Range.
The Himalayas abut or cross six countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan, with the first three countries having sovereignty over most of the range.[3] The Himalayas are bordered on the northwest by the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, on the north by the Tibetan Plateau, and on the south by the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

The range is also a big hit with hikers and adventure seekers where they do a good hike by traveling up to the point which has seen rapid development in the form of communication towers. The Hanthana mountain range comprises of more than seven peaks dotted gracefully. Among the seven peaks, the forth peak is the highest and the Katusukonda is the last peak and slightly dangerous part of this mountain range. University of Peradeniya is situated adjacent to the Hanthana mountain range
If you want to cover the entire Hanthana range, you can start the hike from Nilambe Meditation Center side and end from Kandy side.
The maximum height of the range is 3800 ft. The mountain range consists of seven peaks. The highest one being the Uura Kanda. The range is a favourite destination among the mountain hikers in Sri Lanka.

Mountain range
A mountain range (also mountain barrier/belt/system) is a geographic area containing numerous geologically related mountains. A mountain system or system of mountain ranges, sometimes is used to combine several geological features that are geographically (regionally) related. On Earth, most significant mountain ranges are the result of plate tectonics, though mountain ranges are formed by a range of processes, are found on many planetary mass objects in the Solar System and are likely a feature of most terrestrial planets.
Mountain ranges are usually segmented by highlands or mountain passes and valleys. Individual mountains within the same mountain range do not necessarily have the same geologic structure or petrology. They may be a mix of different orogenic expressions and terranes, for example thrust sheets, uplifted blocks, fold mountains, and volcanic landforms resulting in a variety of rock types.
Wondrous Ranges
Most geologically young mountain ranges on the Earth's land surface are associated with either the Pacific Ring of Fire or the Alpide Belt. The Pacific Ring of Fire includes the Andes of South America, extends through the North American Cordillera along the Pacific Coast, the Aleutian Range, on through Kamchatka, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, to New Zealand. The Andes is 7,000 kilometres (4,350 mi) long and is often considered the world's longest mountain system.

The Himalayas, or Himalaya, literally, "abode of the snow", is a mountain range in Asia separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
The Himalayan range is home to the planet's highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest. The Himalayas include over a hundred mountains exceeding 7,200 metres (23,600 ft) in elevation. By contrast, the highest peak outside Asia -- Aconcagua, in the Andes -- is 6,961 metres (22,838 ft) tall. The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures of South Asia. Many Himalayan peaks are sacred in both Buddhism and Hinduism.
Besides the Greater Himalayas of these high peaks there are parallel lower ranges. The first foothills, reaching about a thousand meters along the northern edge of the plains, are called the Sivalik Hills or Sub-Himalayan Range. Further north is a higher range reaching two to three thousand meters known as the Lower Himalayan or Mahabharat Range.
The Himalayas abut or cross six countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan, with the first three countries having sovereignty over most of the range.[3] The Himalayas are bordered on the northwest by the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, on the north by the Tibetan Plateau, and on the south by the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

The Andes Mountains line the western edge of South America, from Venezuela all the way along Chile to South America's southern tip (about 9,000 km in all), making them the longest mountain range in the world. Along that route, they cross through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. By width, they cross into Argentina, which borders with Chile. The Andes are one of the tallest mountain ranges, too, trailing only the Himalayas of Asia in height. Many summits (tops of the mountains) reach higher than 20,000 feet.

Because the Andes stretch from the north end of the continent to the southern tip, the range of climates of the mountains varies. Some climates are bone-freezing cold, while others are quite warm. This has to do with the elevation of each climate, as does how close that climate is to the equator. Also, the height of each mountain can play a role in its climate. Each climate supports its own type of animal and plant life.
♦ Animals ♦
Because of the sheer size of the Andes, the range supports many different types of animal life. Not only do the Andes house many different types of birds, including the flamingo and the condor, it also provides an environment for the mountain lion, the llama, and the spectacled bear. It houses as well the giant toad and the Andean iguana, one of the few lizards to be found in such a cold climate.

Κορυφές που φτάνουν στα 7.000 μέτρα ύψος όχι μόνο προσφέρουν μοναδική εικόνα, αλλά και επηρεάζουν όλο τον κλιματολογικό χάρτη. Η γη στη σφαίρα των Άνδεων είναι γεμάτη αντιθέσεις. Φωτιά και πάγος. Κρύο και ζέστη. Υγρασία και θύελλες στο νότο, παγετώνες στα ορεινά, ηφαίστεια, θερμοπίδακες, πηγές και αλμυρές λίμνες.
Στη δυτική πλευρά της οροσειράς, ο εμπλουτισμένος με υγρασία αέρας, προσφέρει πλούσια δάση που καλύπτονται από λειχήνες, ενώ η ανατολική πλευρά δέχεται μόνο το 10% των βροχοπτώσεων και είναι γεμάτη ημι-άνυδρες περιοχές. Ξεκινώντας από την Tierra del Fuego, στο νοτιότερο σημείο της Αμερικανικής ηπείρου, ταξιδεύουμε κατά μήκος των Άνδεων προς το βορρά και σκαρφαλώνουμε έως σε ύψος 5.000 μέτρων, στο Altipano της Βολιβίας, στο Περού. Μετά, ακολουθούμε την κατάβαση του νερού και φτάνουμε στο Pantanal, τον μεγαλύτερο υγρότοπο του κόσμου. Συναντάμε εκπληκτική φύση, πολλές ιστορίες ζώων. The Andes Mountains line the western edge of South America, from Venezuela all the way along Chile to South America's southern tip (about 9,000 km in all), making them the longest mountain range in the world. Along that route, they cross through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. By width, they cross into Argentina, which borders with Chile. The Andes are one of the tallest mountain ranges, too, trailing only the Himalayas of Asia in height. Many summits (tops of the mountains) reach higher than 20,000 feet.
