Solo (music)

In music, a solo (from the Italian: solo, meaning alone, although assolo is now used in Italy when referring to the musical solo) is a piece or a section of a piece played or sung by a single performer. In practice this means a number of different things, depending on the type of music and the context.

The word is also used for the act of performing a solo ("to solo"), and sometimes for the performer (more often a soloist).

The plural is soli or the anglicised form solos. In some context these are interchangeable, but soli tends to be restricted to classical music, and tends to refer to either the solo performers or the solo passages in a single piece: it would not often be used to refer to several pieces that happen to be for single performers. Furthermore, the word soli can be used to refer to a small number of simultaneous parts assigned to single players in an orchestral composition. In the Baroque concerto grosso, the term for such a group of soloists was concertino.

Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping, and there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses"). In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form include the production of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on), the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."

Alexx Calise

Alexx Calise is an American guitarist, singer and song writer. She is best known for her solo work and her other musical project Sound of Cancer.

Biography

Alexx Calise was born in Staten Island, New York, but grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. An avid writer, she began playing the guitar at age 11 to emulate her father, who is also a musician. Calise began pursuing her professional music career at the age of 14.

She now resides in Los Angeles, California where she writes and performs her own solo material, and pens songs for other high profile artists. Calise's original music has appeared in several television shows such as Dance Moms, Dance Moms: Miami, Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, Grimm, NY Ink, Last Call With Carson Daly, One Tree Hill, Next, 10 on Top, Tough Love, Dog and Beth on the Hunt, CrossFit Games and more. Her song, "Release Me" was also chosen as the title track for the film, "LA I Hate You", starring William Forsythe (actor), Malcolm McDowell and Deedee Pfieffer, which was distributed by Universal Pictures. She also lent her voice to a Coachella music festival short (music written by Matt O'Malley of human) directed by Sam O'Hare.
