In this episode, I walk through my neighborhood. When I moved here, it was a low-income residential area, but lately upper-middle class folks are moving into the newly constructed Lotte Castle (look for the giant building in the first 1/3 of the video). After meandering through my little neighborhood, I go to the entertainment district a couple blocks away. The area is only the size of about two or three small blocks. It's pretty typical for Korea; the standard chain restaurants and karaoke bars can all be found here.
Forgive the chalky visuals, I had a lot of trouble processing and editing this video. Also, I used a new format.

In this travel video we show you Audrey Bergner's Korean neighborhood of Dongbaek located in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea (용인 -- 동백) as we tour around some of our favorite areas.
We take you on a tour of some of our favorite Korean restaurants, Korean bars and Korean coffee houses. Some of the top places to eat in the area include Han's Deli, a Shabu Shabu joint and our favorite cheap Korean gimbap restaurant. Afterwards, we explore a nearby park where I take the time to go jogging (running) around the lake. Considering how much food I ate while visiting my family back home in Canada compounded by Korean New feasts, I certainly needed the exercise trying to bust my blogger belly.

At this park we notice that certain sections of the pond are frozen where the ducks are still swimming and searching for food. Although wildlife spottings are rare in Audrey's neighborhood, around E-Mart you can often see birds in and around the pond.
Along the sidewalks it is covered in ice and snow and is quite treacherous to walk around. Both of us have fallen to the ground hard during these winter months. It's also quite common to see a pedestrian take a tumble scurrying to and from work.
This is a very typical Korean cold day during winter. We've decided to embrace the weather as much as we can going for short walks and playing in the snow; however, I certainly enjoy it more than Audrey who is not a fan of subzero temperatures.
The streets are quite bare because it is Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year). rendering this normally bustling area into a near ghost town:

Today we are going to do a tour of my neighborhood - Dongbaek - in the city of Yongin, so we are just leaving my apartment now and I'll show you around. In the winter!
It is icy.
We have a man in a Santa suit over here and that only means one thing - Cafe Bene! I think it is a girl. It is a man, I'm telling you.
These days it is Korean Seollal, which is the Korean / Chinese New Year and all over this area in Dongbaek things have completely shut down. That is why there is hardly anybody. Over here is one of our favorite places to eat - it is called the noodle tree - and it is a chain restaurant. You can find all kinds of different noodles both hot and cold. Over here is a place I need to avoid these days because I am on a diet - it is called the Waffle Bandt. They have ice cream and delicious waffles. They have the best blueberry waffles. I don't want to go there.
Normally pizza in Korea is very expensive but over here at Pizza School you can get a pizza for five or six thousand Won which is about five US dollars and that is enough to feed two people. We go there often. Or one hungry guy named Sam. Which one are you trying to win? I want Winnie The Pooh. They have all these kind of Teddy Bear vending machines all over Korea. You put in some money but chances are you won't win anything.
Here we are at Dongbaek Yeok (or Dongbaek station). This is where the subway runs. Unfortunately, it has been abandoned for the past year but I hear it is about to start operating next month after I leave Korea. Just in time!
Getting some much needed exercise. This is the lake by E-Mart and the complex. As you can see right now it is frozen over because it is winter time but in the summer it is a really nice place to hang out to come and play badminton. They also have performances and concerts. This is where it happens. This is going to be where I will be going jogging every day. Oh, yeah!

Me and my friends visited the Korean Folk Village in Yongin South of Seoul. A few famous dramas were partly shot there. But even if you're not a Korean drama fan the village is worth a visit.

Audrey gives us a tour of her Korean apartment in Dongbaek -- Yongin, South Korea. As English teachers we're provided an apartment by our respective schools. Compared to my apartment Audrey's officetel if far more modern and smart in terms of features; however, it's not nearly as spacious as my Korean apartment located in Anseong. Overall, our apartments in Korea are quite standard.

The very first apartment I had was merely a shack on top of a roof. Thus, I'm quite pleased that we both have such comfortable living spaces here in Korea. For the apartment tour, we start by entering the apartment which has a padded code automated door lock. Once inside she entertains us by playing music with her Ukulele; don't you think she's quite skilled? Afterwards, we're given a tour of the kitchen, fridge (with Dulce de Leche), bed, couch, closet, toilet and bathroom.
Dulce de Leche is a caramel milk type spread that originated in Argentina. I first had this delicious spread while traveling in Buenos Aires back in 2010.
Anyhow, getting back on track, one of the more interesting features is the heated toilet. During the winter time when the weather hit subzero temperatures, the heated toilet is a welcome addition! Finally we show you views from the apartment. From this particular vantage point we have a great view of her neighborhood. One of our funniest and most humorous memories was watching a couple of Korean men sunbath on top of an apartment during the summer. I doubt they realized anyone was watching them from afar.
The apartment Audrey has is best classified as a studio. These kinds of Korean officetels are common for young single adults throughout the country:

Yongin
Yongin is a major city in the Seoul Capital Area, located in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. With a population of nearly 1 million, the city has developed abruptly since the 21st century, recording the highest population growth of any city in the country. Yongin is home to Everland and Caribbean Bay, South Korea's most popular amusement and water parks. The city is also home to the Korean Folk Village, the largest of its kind.
About
Yongin is a city almost as large as Seoul by area, consisting of the highly urbanized districts of Suji-gu and Giheung-gu and the semi-urbanized district of Cheoin-gu. Yongin's urbanized districts are located close to the capital and many commute to and from downtown Seoul in approximately 30–40 minutes by cars using the Gyeongbu Expressway or Yongin-Seoul Expressway, the Bundang Line subway, the Shinbundang Line subway or metropolitan buses. The Shinbundang Line with a maximum speed of 110 km/h extended to Suji-gu in January 2016, which allows Suji residents to travel to Gangnam Station in 20–30 minutes. The Bundang Line extended south to Giheung Station in December 2011, connecting to EverLine that extends all the way to Everland. In December 2013, the Bundang Line extended to Suwon Station of Seoul Subway Line 1.

One of our funniest and most humorous memories was watching a couple of Korean men sunbath on top of an apartment during the summer. I doubt they realized anyone was watching them from afar. In this episode, I walk through my neighborhood. When I moved here, it was a low-income residential area, but lately upper-middle class folks are moving into the newly constructed Lotte Castle (look for the giant building in the first 1/3 of the video). After meandering through my little neighborhood, I go to the entertainment district a couple blocks away. The area is only the size of about two or three small blocks. It's pretty typical for Korea; the standard chain restaurants and karaoke bars can all be found here. Forgive the chalky visuals, I had a lot of trouble processing and editing this video. Exploring Dongbaek neighborhood located in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea (용인 - 동백)
In this travel video we show you Audrey Bergner's Korean neighborhood of Dongbaek located in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea (용인 -- 동백) as we tour around some of our favorite areas. We take you on a tour of some of our favorite Korean restaurants, Korean bars and Korean coffee houses. Some of the top places to eat in the area include Han's Deli, a Shabu Shabu joint and our favorite cheap Korean gimbap restaurant. Afterwards, we explore a nearby park where I take the time to go jogging (running) around the lake. At this park we notice that certain sections of the pond are frozen where the ducks are still swimming and searching for food. Although wildlife spottings are rare in Audrey's neighborhood, around E-Mart you can often see birds in and around the pond.
Along the sidewalks it is covered in ice and snow and is quite treacherous to walk around. Both of us have fallen to the ground hard during these winter months. It's also quite common to see a pedestrian take a tumble scurrying to and from work.
This is a very typical Korean cold day during winter. We've decided to embrace the weather as much as we can going for short walks and playing in the snow; however, I certainly enjoy it more than Audrey who is not a fan of subzero temperatures.
The streets are quite bare because it is Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year). rendering this normally bustling area into a near ghost town:

Today we are going to do a tour of my neighborhood - Dongbaek - in the city of Yongin, so we are just leaving my apartment now and I'll show you around. In the winter!
It is icy.
We have a man in a Santa suit over here and that only means one thing - Cafe Bene! I think it is a girl. It is a man, I'm telling you.
These days it is Korean Seollal, which is the Korean / Chinese New Year and all over this area in Dongbaek things have completely shut down. That is why there is hardly anybody. Over here is one of our favorite places to eat - it is called the noodle tree - and it is a chain restaurant. You can find all kinds of different noodles both hot and cold. Over here is a place I need to avoid these days because I am on a diet - it is called the Waffle Bandt. They have ice cream and delicious waffles. They have the best blueberry waffles. I don't want to go there.
Normally pizza in Korea is very expensive but over here at Pizza School you can get a pizza for five or six thousand Won which is about five US dollars and that is enough to feed two people. We go there often. Or one hungry guy named Sam. Which one are you trying to win? I want Winnie The Pooh. They have all these kind of Teddy Bear vending machines all over Korea. You put in some money but chances are you won't win anything.
Here we are at Dongbaek Yeok (or Dongbaek station). This is where the subway runs. Unfortunately, it has been abandoned for the past year but I hear it is about to start operating next month after I leave Korea. Just in time!
Getting some much needed exercise. This is the lake by E-Mart and the complex. As you can see right now it is frozen over because it is winter time but in the summer it is a really nice place to hang out to come and play badminton. They also have performances and concerts. This is where it happens. This is going to be where I will be going jogging every day. Oh, yeah!

Audrey gives us a tour of her Korean apartment in Dongbaek -- Yongin, South Korea. As English teachers we're provided an apartment by our respective schools. Compared to my apartment Audrey's officetel if far more modern and smart in terms of features; however, it's not nearly as spacious as my Korean apartment located in Anseong. Overall, our apartments in Korea are quite standard.

The very first apartment I had was merely a shack on top of a roof. Thus, I'm quite pleased that we both have such comfortable living spaces here in Korea. For the apartment tour, we start by entering the apartment which has a padded code automated door lock. Once inside she entertains us by playing music with her Ukulele; don't you think she's quite skilled? Afterwards, we're given a tour of the kitchen, fridge (with Dulce de Leche), bed, couch, closet, toilet and bathroom.
Dulce de Leche is a caramel milk type spread that originated in Argentina. I first had this delicious spread while traveling in Buenos Aires back in 2010.
Anyhow, getting back on track, one of the more interesting features is the heated toilet. During the winter time when the weather hit subzero temperatures, the heated toilet is a welcome addition! Finally we show you views from the apartment. From this particular vantage point we have a great view of her neighborhood. One of our funniest and most humorous memories was watching a couple of Korean men sunbath on top of an apartment during the summer. I doubt they realized anyone was watching them from afar.
The apartment Audrey has is best classified as a studio. These kinds of Korean officetels are common for young single adults throughout the country:

Korean style Asian Fusion Lunch Set in Yongin, Korea (California Rolls & Vietnamese Pho)
In this travel video we're in the mood for a quick lunch so we head out to try a new Korean style Asian Fusion lunch set nearby Audrey's apartment in Yongin, Korea at J's Table that specializes in California rolls and Vietnamese Pho. We liked the trendy, artsy and modern type atmosphere and do it yourself self service where we grabbed our own complimentary Korean tea and cutlery. The food itself was delicious and light - the perfect lunch. We had fun slurping the pho while adding extra hot sauce with a cute heart in the middle. This travel video is of a Korean Traditional Marriage reenactment performance that took place at the Korean Folk Village (한국 민속촌) located in Yongin, South Korea. The Korean Traditional Wedding Ceremony called Pae Baek (폐백). We've all seen it somewhere, either through a Korean drama or a family or friends wedding. Everland Resort, Yongin, Korea
Everland(에버랜드) is the largest amusement park in Korea. With 6.8 million visitors, Everland ranked tenth in the world for amusement park attendance in 2010. This video consists of some scenes taken in the zoo and the square in Everland. If you visited Everland, you can enjoy a lot of roller coasters, a safari where lions and tigers live together, rides, and beautiful parades which are not included in this video. 1) Visiting Insadong
Considered by many to the cultural hub of Seoul, Insadong is the perfect place to indulge in Korean street, go shopping and take in Korean traditional musical performances. It is also one of the best places for people watching as you'll notice a mix of both Koreans and foreigners.
2) Korean Folk Village
The Korean Folk Village, nestled in between the cities of Suwon and Yongin, is a place you'll definitely want to check out. While wandering around he scenic premises you can snack on Korean street food delights such as sugary taffy where you'll notice traditional Korean wedding ceremonies, tightrope walking and equestrian students and performances. The best time of year to come is in the fall or spring.
3) Cat Cafes
Although we've been to several cat cafes in Thailand, Malaysia and Germany we still haven't found one that tops the cat cafe we visited in Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea. Purchase an entrance ticket, which entitles you to a drink, allows you to come in and interact with the cats playing, feeding and petting them to your hearts content.
4) One of the most historic markets in all of Seoul - and Korea for that matter - is Namdaemun Market. As the largest and oldest open air market in all of Korea you'll have a chance to shop and eat Korean street food all day long. My favorite snack here is hotteok.
5) A scenic and peaceful way to experience the heart of downtown Seoul is to wander along the Cheonggyecheon. There are few places that are more attractive to go walking. When we visited in winter we noticed many ice sculptures.
6) To beat the heat in the winter, visit a traditional Korean tea house for a fragrant cup of hot fruity tea and a delicious plate of Korean rice cake snacks.
7) Not a fan of cats? Try visiting a dog cafe as an alternative. It's the same deal as the cat cafe in terms of purchasing overpriced drinks for the chance to play and interact with cute dogs and puppies.
8) Kimbap Restaurant
For excellent Korean rice rolls, known as kimbap, head to one of the ubiquitous locations for some excellent kimchi fried rice, mandu and Korean soups.
9) Bamboo Park
If you visit the city of Damyang, in the southern region of Korea, you'll be treated to the Damyang Bamboo Forest Park. A nice scenic escape from urban Korean life, these parks do sometimes get crowded.
10) Boseong Tea Fields and Plantation
Not far from the Bamboo Forest Park is the Boseong Tea Fields. Come climb up to the very top - it's quite the workout and enjoy a cup of green tea or green tea flavored ice cream upon returning to the bottom.
11) There are a plethora of fascinating palaces and temples to explore in Seoul. Our favorite, is Gyeongbokgung Palace where admission is only 3000 Won.
12) If you're ready to shop until you drop be sure to visit Myeongdong, one of the most popular shopping districts in all of Seoul. Here you'll find swanky boutique shops and plenty of restaurants.
13) For the art and hipster scene be sure to visit Hongdae, the most popular student hangout area for Koreans. From food to nightlife to shopping this place has it all for young 20 somethings.
14) An alternative to Itaewon is Songtan - located nearby an American Military base in the Pyeongtaek region. This is where you'll come to buy American goods and to eat International cuisine.
15) Seoul Tower offers amazing views of the city but I enjoyed climbing Namsan even more. The climb is free and it best enjoyed on a fall or spring afternoon when the weather is cool.

When coming up with a top attractions travel guide for South Korea it became a daunting task to go through my travel video library collection of Korean videos and decide which ones to use. There is just so much to see and do in Korea from food to culture and from attractions and cities worth visiting. From Seoul to Busan and from countryside to urban city centers there is something for everyone. The following recommendation for the top things to do in South Korea:

1) Visiting Insadong
Considered by many to the cultural hub of Seoul, Insadong is the perfect place to indulge in Korean street, go shopping and take in Korean traditional musical performances. It is also one of the best places for people watching as you'll notice a mix of both Koreans and foreigners.
2) Korean Folk Village
The Korean Folk Village, nestled in between the cities of Suwon and Yongin, is a place you'll definitely want to check out. While wandering around he scenic premises you can snack on Korean street food delights such as sugary taffy where you'll notice traditional Korean wedding ceremonies, tightrope walking and equestrian students and performances. The best time of year to come is in the fall or spring.
3) Cat Cafes
Although we've been to several cat cafes in Thailand, Malaysia and Germany we still haven't found one that tops the cat cafe we visited in Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea. Purchase an entrance ticket, which entitles you to a drink, allows you to come in and interact with the cats playing, feeding and petting them to your hearts content.
4) One of the most historic markets in all of Seoul - and Korea for that matter - is Namdaemun Market. As the largest and oldest open air market in all of Korea you'll have a chance to shop and eat Korean street food all day long. My favorite snack here is hotteok.
5) A scenic and peaceful way to experience the heart of downtown Seoul is to wander along the Cheonggyecheon. There are few places that are more attractive to go walking. When we visited in winter we noticed many ice sculptures.
6) To beat the heat in the winter, visit a traditional Korean tea house for a fragrant cup of hot fruity tea and a delicious plate of Korean rice cake snacks.
7) Not a fan of cats? Try visiting a dog cafe as an alternative. It's the same deal as the cat cafe in terms of purchasing overpriced drinks for the chance to play and interact with cute dogs and puppies.
8) Kimbap Restaurant
For excellent Korean rice rolls, known as kimbap, head to one of the ubiquitous locations for some excellent kimchi fried rice, mandu and Korean soups.
9) Bamboo Park
If you visit the city of Damyang, in the southern region of Korea, you'll be treated to the Damyang Bamboo Forest Park. A nice scenic escape from urban Korean life, these parks do sometimes get crowded.
10) Boseong Tea Fields and Plantation
Not far from the Bamboo Forest Park is the Boseong Tea Fields. Come climb up to the very top - it's quite the workout and enjoy a cup of green tea or green tea flavored ice cream upon returning to the bottom.
11) There are a plethora of fascinating palaces and temples to explore in Seoul. Our favorite, is Gyeongbokgung Palace where admission is only 3000 Won.
12) If you're ready to shop until you drop be sure to visit Myeongdong, one of the most popular shopping districts in all of Seoul. Here you'll find swanky boutique shops and plenty of restaurants.
13) For the art and hipster scene be sure to visit Hongdae, the most popular student hangout area for Koreans. From food to nightlife to shopping this place has it all for young 20 somethings.
14) An alternative to Itaewon is Songtan - located nearby an American Military base in the Pyeongtaek region. This is where you'll come to buy American goods and to eat International cuisine.
15) Seoul Tower offers amazing views of the city but I enjoyed climbing Namsan even more. The climb is free and it best enjoyed on a fall or spring afternoon when the weather is cool.

This travel video is of us packing up all of our belongings (putting them into a backpack) and moving out from our apartment in Dongbaek, Yongin, South Korea to travel the world! For months, we've had a date circled on the calendar. When something seems so far away at the time (which it did) it's surreal for the date/time to finally arrive. As much as we've enjoyed our time in Korea we're backpackers at heart and our minds have always focused on the trip we've been planning to take. In this travel video, we show you how we fit all of our travel gear into our backpacking backpacks.

It's probably quite evident that we're rusty at backpacking our backpacks given we haven't traveled or left Korea in over a year.
As backpackers, we needed to eliminate a lot of stuff (mostly winter clothes) to pack as little as possible.
This meant we had a huge to do list that included visiting a Korean post office to ship our things back to Canada.
The end of a teaching contract in Korea is always the most hectic because you're still expected to teach all of your regular classes; however, you have the added responsibilities of dealing with your contract, closing your bank account, working out your pension refund and clearing out your apartment.
As much as we'd like to admit we're always on top of this kind of things, it's far from the truth. Scrambling last minute we barely were able to get everything done on time.
We're currently off to travel in Malaysia on an indefinite trip, which should see us spending most of the year (if not the entire year) in Asia.
We both couldn't hide or enthusiasm by doing silly dances while wearing our backpacks. If that's not the worst dancing you've ever seen I'm thoroughly shocked.
We'll miss our time in Korea and have fond memories but now we're doing exactly what we want by traveling the world!

In this travel video we're in the mood for a quick lunch so we head out to try a new Korean style Asian Fusion lunch set nearby Audrey's apartment in Yongin, Korea at J's Table that specializes in California rolls and Vietnamese Pho. We liked the trendy, artsy and modern type atmosphere and do it yourself self service where we grabbed our own complimentary Korean tea and cutlery. The Korean owner, a middle aged man who had spent time in North America as a sushi chef, spoke excellent English and made us feel welcome.
Overall, we enjoyed the Korean meal and would love to come back again soon if we have time before we leave Korea in a few days.
For those interested in trying Korean fusion food, it's not difficult to find these kinds of restaurants that often have a Korean twist on either Western or other types of Asian cuisine.
As a general tip while traveling and/or living in Korea: try different restaurants whenever you can.
In the last few weeks we got out of our comfort zone and routines and hit up a bunch of new eateries in Audrey's neighborhood.
What we discovered is that we found places that we wish we had of tried many months ago.
The perfect time to go for lunch in Korea is around 11 to 11:30 before Korean office workers take lunch.
Sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll be the first person in the restaurant and service will be very quick.
We're sad to be leaving Korea. We've loved trying traditional Korean foods and fusion types of restaurants. We're certainly going to miss the cuisine, culture and people once we leave.

This restaurant is quite similar to some of the other Korean fusion ones we've been to. It is sort of a self-serve type of place. You go up to the front and place your order. The menu is all up on the top. You just go and grab your own drinks and they bring you the food. You don't have to pay for it initially. It is pretty cool.
We also got some complimentary teas with our meal. This is one of our last days in the neighborhood. We are leaving Korea in four days, so we're just grabbing a quick lunch and we have lots of packing to do. We need to ship things home and just get lots of things done in the coming days. We're running out of time.
What do we have here? This is our beef Pho. It is Vietnamese with a Korean twist here.
Isn't that cute! A little hearty in the sauce.
One tip we have for those eating lunch in Korea is if you come early - a lot of the restaurants open between eleven and eleven thirty - if you come right at eleven thirty chances are you may be the only person there.
We're putting in a sweet and spicy sauce into the Pho just for some taste. Swirl that around.
Miss Audrey here is trying the California rolls. How are they? It is really good sushi. They make it well.
This is our Vietnamese Pho. We have some plain noodles in here and some bean sprouts with a little bit of beef and some greens as well. We've added some hot sauce to give it more flavor. It is really nice and spicy. Does it get your stamp of approval? It does indeed.
One thing we're both going to really miss when we leave is the Korean kinds of food. I mean not just Korean food but all the different kinds of food we've had in Korea such as the Korean western food, the Korean fusion food and the traditional Korean food. Everything! We just love to eat if you haven't noticed. I think they have.
Overall, this was a nice light but very rewarding lunch. It is also very affordable. We'll be back again soon.

In this travel video we're in the mood for a quick lunch so we head out to try a new Korean style Asian Fusion lunch set nearby Audrey's apartment in Yongin, Korea at J's Table that specializes in California rolls and Vietnamese Pho. We liked the trendy, artsy and modern type atmosphere and do it yourself self service where we grabbed our own complimentary Korean tea and cutlery. In this travel video we revisit one of of our favourite Shabu-shabu restaurants in Audrey's area of Yongin, South Korea. I had just moved out of my Korean apartment in Jinsari -- Anseong and I was already craving the home style cooking of my Korean mama from my favorite restaurant in my local area. Luckily, this fabulous Shabu Shabu restaurant was an adequate enough replacement.

The last time we came to this particular Korean restaurant was in the summer; but now that it is winter the 'hot pot' aspect of the meal is far more appealing given how cold it has been outside of late. It's the perfect winter food as tender slices of beef, leafy greens, noodles, mushrooms, potatoes and other ingredients are all cooked in a simmering hot pot filled with a spicy broth. There was so much food we struggled to finish it all; however, I gave my best effort to dust it off.
Shabu shabu is one of our favourite communal style do it yourself Korean meals and we highly recommend it to anyone. With Japanese origins, it has really caught on in Korea and China. The first time I ever tried this kind of hot pot was when I was a University student in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
With the different spices and sauces it's similar in many ways to a western fondue -- except it is far more spicier! In my opinion, it's quite a bit better.
At the end of the meal fried rice is made out of the leftovers along with complimentary coffee and mints to help mask the taste of the spicy meal.

These traditional outfits date back to the Joseon Dynasty where women and men of the Royal Family wore these decorative, bright colored outfits for formal functions or ceremonies. The 20th century has modernized the Hanbok's for practical reasons.
