Mary Louisa Toynbee, known as Polly Toynbee (/ˈtɔɪnbi/; born 27 December 1946), is a British journalist and writer, and has been a columnist for The Guardian newspaper since 1998.
She is a social democrat and was a candidate for the Social Democratic Party in the 1983 general election. She now broadly supports the Labour Party. During the 2010 general election she called for tactical voting to keep out the Conservatives with the hope that this would lead to a Lab-Lib coalition supporting proportional representation.
However, she was a strong critic of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition and urged a vote for Labour in 2015. Toynbee previously worked as social affairs editor for the BBC and also for The Independent newspaper. She is Vice President of the British Humanist Association, having previously served as its President between 2007 and 2012. She was also named 'Columnist of the Year' at the 2007 British Press Awards.
Polly Toynbee was born at Yafford on the Isle of Wight, the second daughter of the literary critic Philip Toynbee (by his first wife Anne), granddaughter of the historian Arnold J. Toynbee, and great-great niece of philanthropist and economic historian Arnold Toynbee, after whom Toynbee Hall in the East End of London is named. Her parents divorced when Toynbee was aged four and she moved to London with her mother.
Peter Jonathan Hitchens (born 28 October 1951) is an English journalist and author. He has published six books, including The Abolition of Britain, The Rage Against God and The War We Never Fought. He is a frequent critic of political correctness, and describes himself as a theist and Burkean conservative.
Hitchens writes for Britain's The Mail on Sunday newspaper and is a former foreign correspondent in Moscow and Washington. He works as a foreign reporter and in 2010 was awarded the Orwell Prize. He is the younger brother of the late writer Christopher Hitchens.
Peter Hitchens was born in Malta, where his father, a career naval officer, was stationed as part of the colonial garrison. He was educated at the Leys School and the Oxford College of Further Education before being accepted at the University of York, where he studied Philosophy and Politics and was a member of Alcuin College, graduating in 1973. He later commented that he "must have been a severe disappointment" to his parents after making sure he "would never get into Oxbridge" by being arrested breaking into a government fall-out shelter.

Polly Toynbee and Peter Hitchens talk about Conservative chancellor George Osborne and his public sector cuts, in an attempt to balance the UK's out of control borrowing and spending on the public sector. Polly Toynbee does not like the cuts, but lapped up the borrowing that Labour did which bought Labour votes. Now it's payback time for all the out of control borrowing and spending. Recorded from BBC's Politics Show, 30 January 2011.
Three so called experts give their opinion on the tax changes in the UK, and tackling the deficit. Of course, Polly Toynbee STILL denies there is a problem with the deficit, that the public sector does not need massive cutting back, after Labour created nearly a million non-jobs, and the UK's private sector on the brink of collapse paying for it all. As for the Newsnight presenter talking about there being "a party" in the UK with cheap credit etc. etc.? I was saving, now it's being stolen from me to prop up the feckless borrowers, which includes the government. The spend spend spenders are laughing, and those that saved for a rainy day are paying for the feckless. Bastards! Recorded from BBC Newsnight, 06 April 2011.

Untypically (sarcasm), The Guardian rag reporter Polly Toynbee lapped up Gordon Brown's pre-election eulogy speech to the New Labour party earlier in the day. Missed the very beginning of the interview as I was jumping between BBC news and Sky news channels. Recorded from Sky News, 20 February 2010.
Journalist Polly Toynbee talks to Ecotricity founder Dale Vince about "green issues, politics and the election".
David Cameron: that modernising, hoodie-hugging, all-in-it-together politician who took office five years ago has implemented some of the most savage cuts of recent times, says Polly Toynbee. If Cameron's party win again, they plan £48bn more cuts. The Conservatives are taking Britain to the brink. BBC News November 2014 and Sunday Politics December 2014. Polly Toynbee say’s that UKIP voters don’t read newspapers or watch the news and that she’s surprised Channel 4 was allowed to give a favourable interview to Nigel Farage so close to the General Election, (over 4 months away at the time the programme was broadcast).
http://www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk | In this video interview, The Guardian Columnist Polly Toynbee explores who should hold responsibility for making rationing decisions in health care -- including the role of the public -- and considers the potential for local, clinically-led variation in the provision of NHS services. Polly spoke at the Nuffield Trust and The Royal College of Surgeons of England debate: Could the NHS further restrict the services it provides to offer a core package of services for all patients?, in February 2012.
