more
Event Details
The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the Office of Acquisitions Management, Contracts and Grants (AMCG), components of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), invite you to participate in our annual conference at which you can learn about U.S. Government medical countermeasure requirements, interact with BARDA and AMCG staff, and network with private sector colleagues working in this space.
BARDA supports the advanced research & development, manufacturing, acquisition, and stockpiling of medical countermeasures (drugs, biological therapeutics, vaccines, diagnostics, and non-pharmaceutical countermeasures) against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, pandemic influenza, and emerging infectious diseases, under the authority of the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act, initially approved by Congress in 2006. BARDA also oversees all procurements made under Project BioShield, an act passed by Congress in 2004 to encourage private sector involvement in these activities. BARDA carries out its mission via public-private partnerships with Industry and other organizations, using agreements administered by AMCG. BARDA’s work is carried out as part of the Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasure Enterprise (PHEMCE), a coordinated interagency effort that also includes three primary HHS agencies (NIH, FDA, and CDC), as well as the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Veteran’s Affairs, and Agriculture. In 2016, BARDA continues its second decade of preparedness activities, with many notable accomplishments, but with much work still to be done.
Conference participants will learn about:
The past, present, and future of BARDA, what has been accomplished and what remains to be accomplished to ensure preparedness against outstanding threats
BARDA’s strategy, goals, and areas of interest for FY17 and beyond
BARDA Program updates in Influenza and CBRN threat areas
Updates and details about BARDA’s Broad Agency Announcements
Challenges of dealing with emerging, as well as current, infectious diseases
BARDA Core Services that can support product development and manufacturing
Building a national medical response infrastructure, and updates on responses to recent public health emergencies
New initiatives and future directions for BARDA
Opportunities to develop medical countermeasures for both government and commercial markets
Roles and responsibilities of BARDA, AMCG, and private sector partners in contract administration and performance
BARDA Industry Day 2016 will be a three-day conference with Days One and Two providing an overview of BARDA’s priorities for product development and manufacturing for all threats going forward from FY17, as well as the range of agreements that BARDA and AMCG use to work with the private sector.
In addition to the general sessions held in the Amphitheatre on Days One and Two, BID 2016 will for the first time feature breakout sessions that will focus on more specific strategic, programmatic, and technical topics in an interactive discussion format. These sessions will be held in a conference room adjacent to the Amphitheatre, so attendance will be capped due to space limitations. Conference participants will have the opportunity to pre-register for these sessions on a first-come, first served basis when registering online for the conference. Early registration is recommended since these sessions are expected to fill up quickly.
As in previous years, conference participants can also request one-on-one meetings on Day Three with BARDA Program Staff and AMCG Contracting Officers to discuss their specific interests and questions about working with BARDA. Pre-registration for these meetings will also be available at the time of online registration, and early registration is recommended since these meeting timeslots are also expected to fill up.
Online conference registration, as well as pre-registration for breakout sessions and one-on-one meetings is now available at: https://www.medicalcountermeasures.gov/App/BARDA/ConferenceRegistration.aspx?id=14

The amount of data used
more
Event Details
The amount of data used by organizations has been exploding — 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last four years alone, and much of it is unstructured. It’s not just the amount of data that presents challenges; the types of data being collected are changing and coming from everywhere: sensors used to gather climate information, posts to social media sites, digital pictures and videos posted online, transaction records of online purchases, and from cell phone GPS signals to name a few.
Analyzing large data sets — or big data — has become increasingly complex when needing to identify trends, combat crime, drive efficiency and quality, and reduce fraud and errors. Developing a Big Data plan can deliver many opportunities, but with these opportunities also come challenges, such as how to capture, store, manage, share, analyze, search and protect large amounts of data — as well as having the right employee skills who can derive actionable insight from large amounts of data through analytical techniques and statistical analysis.
Participate in Digital Government Institute’s 5th Annual Big Data Conference & Expo, and explore
– How to effectively address the overwhelming task of managing big data
– How to harness the power of large amounts of data
– The technological developments that allow analysts to store, manage and analyze large and diverse datasets
– The potential benefits big data applications and solutions can provide agencies, including the ability to integrate disparate datasets for analysis and interagency cooperation
