The Pirates of Penzance - Hold Monsters Major-General (Subtitles)

Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.
Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General (often referred to as the Major-General's Song or Modern Major-General's Song) is a patter song from Gilbert and Sullivan's 1879 comic opera The Pirates of Penzance. It is perhaps the most famous song in Gilbert and Sullivan's operas. It is sung by Major-General Stanley at his first entrance, towards the end of Act I. The song satirises the idea of the "modern" educated British Army officer of the latter 19th century. It is one of the most difficult patter songs to perform, due to the fast pace and tongue-twisting nature of the lyrics. The song is replete with historical and cultural references, in which the Major-General describes his impressive and well-rounded education, but he says that his military knowledge has "only been brought down to the beginning of the century." The character of Major-General Stanley was widely taken to be a caricature of the popular general Sir Garnet Wolseley.

Major general
Major general (or major-general, short MG) is a military rank used in many countries. It is derived from the older rank of sergeant major general. The disappearance of the "sergeant" in the title explains the apparently confusing phenomenon whereby a lieutenant general outranks a major general. (Though a major outranks a lieutenant, a lieutenant outranks a sergeant-major.)
In the Commonwealth and United States, it is a division commander's rank subordinate to the rank of lieutenant general and senior to the rank of brigadier/brigadier general.
In some countries, including much of Eastern Europe, major general is the lowest of the general officer ranks, with no brigadier-grade rank above colonel.
In France, major general (major général) is an appointment, normally of corps general. The major general assists a chief of staff. There is one major general for the chief of staff of the armed forces as a whole, and one for each of the four armed forces chiefs (army, navy, air force and gendarmerie).

When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp. Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

What started off as a heated argument suddenly became a moment of disgrace for everybody on The News Hour last night after Major General (Retd) G D Bakshi, a soldier who has served our nation on one single oath he took when he entered the army, broke down on National Television. While on the debate, he spoke in favour of the millions of soldiers who have given their life for India, how much the tricolour meant to him and his Jawans and how saddening it is to see a handful of people debating against this and dragging our pious National flag into a political mess.
It’s such a shame that we’ve reached a point where we have debates on whether or not our flag must be ‘allowed’ to be hoisted in universities. The panelists (against the idea of the tricolour being unfurled on every university campus) discussed where one must ‘draw the line’ between being an extreme-nationalist and a patriot. The former being people in favour of the flag hoisting i.e. As someone who isn’t really “patriotic” in the truest of sense, but emotionally connected to this country for everything that it’s made us into, I condemn the attacks on journalists and the hooliganism of some leaders, I condemn the shouting of slogans on streets that demean our country’s image, and when I say I, I speak on behalf of millions of such people who share the same emotion as I do. We detest everything that insults the flesh and blood of our soldiers that have seeped into the soil leaving behind nothing but a safer country for you and I to live in.
Smriti Irani called up the channel mid-way to reassure Major General (Retd) G D Bakshi with the best possible words that represented the millions of true patriots –
“Tragedy of my nation today, that I see tears in eyes of a brave soldier like you. We are grateful for your sacrifices and services. Under that flag everyday, knowingly, unknowingly know this we shall be grateful forever.”

On Arnab's debate today i suddenly realised the difference between us soldiers and others. it suddenly hit me.it hurt me deeply to see what we have become. we have problems now with flying our national Flag.? I learnt with the greatest shock that so far the national flag has not been flying in our Universities? Why pray? Are they UN enclaves in Free India beyond the pale of our soveriginity? Are we required to sing the Communist internaionale there instead of our National anthem? Are the universities paid for by our taxes required to celebrate every Afzal Guru , every Maoist,celebrate every 76 brave CRPF boys who get killed by the Maoists? celebrate every single soldier who gets killed in J&K;? The problem is the sophisticated debate that these bastions of Leftist liberals have created. Every Patriot is a lumpen. the smart set , the real cool intellectulas support Afzal Guru. For that is the fastest way to a Noble peace Prize or even a Magasay Award( Get rich quick guys- who cares for that land called India).Only soldiers like us are stupid enough to become EXTREME NATIONALISTS. Only soldiers make that extreme sacrifice !! and all along we were told it was the SUPREME sacrifice . The Flag my friend is NOT a piece of tattered silk to us soldiers. Asmara, 08 March 2014 -- The funeral service of the late veteran fighter Maj. General Gebregziabher Andemariam, Chief of Staff of the Eritrean Defence Force,was conducted today at Asmara Patriots Cemetery with patriotic zeal in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki, Ministers, Senior Government and PFDJ officials, Army Commanders, religious leaders and a large number of nationals.
The funeral ceremony was accompanied by Salute of the Guard of Honor that marched from Maj. General Gebregziabher's home to the cemetery, and the memoir was presented by Brig. General Tekle Libsu.
The departed Maj. General Gebregziabher joined the Liberation Forces in 1971 and served in various capacities for 43 years ranging from a rank-and-file member to Chief of Staff of the Defense Force, and his exemplary steadfastness persisted in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and the nation-building process. He also possessed a valuable charisma concerning nationalism, love for people, energy, bravery and pleasant personality.
The funeral service witnessed the laying of wreath by President Isaias, Mr. Al-Amin Mohammed Seid, PFDJ Secretary, Gen. Sibhat Ephrem, Defense Minister, Ms. Leul Gebreab, Chairperson of the NUEW, and Commanders of all commands, Naval force and Air Force, as well as the People's Army.
The Government of Eritrea conveys message of condolence to the family members and the citizenry in connection with the passing away of the late Maj. General Gebregziabher Andemariam, chief of staff of the Defense Force.
