STORYLINE:
Veteran South African anti-apartheid activist and newspaper editor Donald Woods died in a Surrey hospital on Sunday, after a long battle with cancer.
He was 67 years old.
Woods was the founder and editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper in East London, South Africa, whose opposition to apartheid eventually forced him into exile.
He was a close friend of Steve Biko, a leader of South Africa's Black Consciousness movement, who died in detention after being tortured by the apartheid security police.
Their relationship was chronicled in the 1987 Richard Attenborough film 'Cry Freedom'.
Woods edited the Daily Dispatch from 1965 to 1977, when he was banned for five years by the apartheid government.
He fled the country for Britain, where he campaigned against apartheid through lecture tours and writing.
Woods returned to South Africa on a visit in 1990 after 13 years in exile.

Caesar Kluck, soft-drink magnate, is found dead in the office of a big radio-broadcasting company. Benjamin Franklin Butts, a sound engineer, discovers that Kluck met his death from cyanogen gas, administered in some mysterious fashion. Harry Jones, head of the company, fires Butts for making the public. Kluck has made many enemies and there are numerous suspects, including Christina "Steenie" MacCorkle, who is in love with Butts; her brother Alexander; radio announcer Dave Chapman; Tony Lisotti, the janitor who had discovered that Kluck was making love to his daughter Maria' Kluck's physician, Doctor Leonard sylvester, and Joe Carney, a racketeer who had been doing Kluck's dirty work. Butts pursues his investigation and his only clue is a deflated toy-advertising balloon he has found next to Kluck's body. Later, Butts discovers Tony;s body in a broom closet and, nearby, finds another deflated balloon, a straw and a pin. He then calls all the suspects together...and solves the mystery.

Donald Woods
Donald James Woods, CBE (15 December 1933 – 19 August 2001) was a South African journalist and anti-apartheid activist. As editor of the Daily Dispatch, he was known for befriending fellow activist Steve Biko, who died in police custody after being detained by the South African government. Woods continued his campaign against apartheid in London, and in 1978 became the first private citizen to address the United Nations Security Council.
Early life
Woods was born at Hobeni, Transkei, where his family had lived for five generations. His ancestors arrived in South Africa with the 1820 Settlers. His parents ran a trading post in Transkei, a tribal reserve, which the South African government would later designate a bantustan. As a boy Woods had extensive regular contact with the Bomvana people. He spoke fluent Xhosa and Afrikaans, as well as his mother tongue, English.
Woods and his brother, Harland, were sent to the Christian Brothers College in Kimberley in the predominantly Afrikaner Northern Cape for their secondary education. The school was academically rigorous, and the Irish Christian Brothers had a reputation for neutrality on questions of politics. While Woods was away at school, the National Party came to power in 1948 and began to build the apartheid structure. When he started his law course at the University of Cape Town in 1952, Woods supported government policies that separated the races, but was wary of the heavy hand of the Afrikaner National Party. During his legal studies he started to question the separatist views he grew up with, becoming politically active in the Federal Party, which rejected apartheid and drew its support from liberal English-speaking whites.

South Africa
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

Steve Biko
Stephen Bantu Biko (18 December 1946 – 12 September 1977) was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s.
A student leader, he later founded the Black Consciousness Movement which would empower and mobilize much of the urban black population. Since his death in police custody, he has been called a martyr of the anti-apartheid movement. While living, his writings and activism attempted to empower black people, and he was famous for his slogan "black is beautiful", which he described as meaning: "man, you are okay as you are, begin to look upon yourself as a human being".
Even though Biko was never a member of the African National Congress (ANC), the ANC has included him in the pantheon of struggle heroes, going as far as using his image for campaign posters in South Africa's first non-racial elections in 1994.Nelson Mandela said of Biko: "They had to kill him to prolong the life of apartheid."
Early life
Biko was born to parents Mzingayi Mathew and Alice 'Mamcete' Biko in Ginsberg Township, in the present-day Eastern Cape province of South Africa. His father was a government clerk, while his mother did domestic work in surrounding white homes. The third of four children, Biko grew up with his older sister Bukelwa; his older brother Khaya; and his younger sister Nobandile. In 1950, at the age of four, Biko suffered the loss of his father who was studying law.

One of the many New York City community organizations that formed in response to the AIDS epidemic is a writers group for Black Gay Men. In honor of James Baldwin's signature work, Another Country, the group selected the name Other Countries. It held its first writers workshop on June 14, 1986. Over the next year, it developed a three-pronged program of peer critique, performance and publishing. In its 25 years, Other Countries has published three volumes of work by Black gay men and women. The most recent VOICES RISING came out in January 2007. Many past and current members have gone on to publish work that "went through" the workshop. Several who developed their craft in the workshop went on to work in publishing, television and academia. Though many of its founding members died decades ago, their affinity group continues to nurture and foster creativity and appreciation of the life we have, here and now. Other Countries celebrates 30 years in June 2016. The workshop continues as a virtual videoconference held each 2nd and 4th Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Internet with members logging into the OC Virtual Workshop on Hangouts from locations in North America and the Caribbean. -

Steve Biko: When I was a student, trying to qualify for the jobs you people will let us have, I suddenly realized that i wasn't just good jobs that were white. The only history we read was made by the white man, written by the white man. Television, cars, medicines - all invented by the white man, even football. Now the way like that, it's not hard to believe there's something inferior about being born black. I began to think this idea of inferiority was an even bigger problem for us than what the Afrikaans were doing to us. At first a black man had to believe he had as much capacity to be a doctor, a leader, as a white man.
Steve Biko: It's a miracle a child survives here at all. People are so desperate for anything they'll beat a kid bloody if they thought he had five Rand. But if you do run fast enough, if you do survive, you grew up in these streets, these houses. Your parents try, but in the end, you only get the education the white man will give you. Then you go to the city to work or shop, and you see their streets, their cars, their houses, and you begin to feel there is something not quite right about yourself. About your humanity. Something to do with your blackness because no matter how smart or dumb a white child is he is born to that world. And you, a black child, smart or dumb you are born into this. And smart or dumb you die in it.
Steve Biko: I just expect to be treated like you expect to be treated. Come on, what are you so afraid of? Once you try you see there's nothing to fear. We're just as weak and human as you are.
Steve Biko: We are going to change South Africa. What we've got to decide is the best way to do that. And as angry as we have the right to be, let us remember that we are in the struggle to kill the idea that one kind of man is superior to another kind of man. And killing that idea is not dependent on the white man. We must stop looking to him to give us something. We have to fill the black community with our own pride. We have to teach our black children black history, tell them about our black heroes, our black culture, so they don't face the white man believing they are inferior. Then we'll stand up to him in anyway he chooses. Conflict, if he likes, but with an open hand, too, to say we can all build a South Africa worth living in - a South Africa for equals, black or white, a South Africa as beautiful as this land is, as beautiful as we are.

In honor of James Baldwin's signature work, Another Country, the group selected the name Other Countries. It held its first writers workshop on June 14, 1986. Over the next year, it developed a three-pronged program of peer critique, performance and publishing. In its 25 years, Other Countries has published three volumes of work by Black gay men and women. The most recent VOICES RISING came out in January 2007. Many past and current members have gone on to publish work that "went through" the workshop. Veteran South African anti-apartheid activist and newspaper editor Donald Woods died in a Surrey hospital on Sunday, after a long battle with cancer.
He was 67 years old.
Woods was the founder and editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper in East London, South Africa, whose opposition to apartheid eventually forced him into exile.
He was a close friend of Steve Biko, a leader of South Africa's Black Consciousness movement, who died in detention after being tortured by the apartheid security police.
Their relationship was chronicled in the 1987 Richard Attenborough film 'Cry Freedom'.
Woods edited the Daily Dispatch from 1965 to 1977, when he was banned for five years by the apartheid government.
He fled the country for Britain, where he campaigned against apartheid through lecture tours and writing.
Woods returned to South Africa on a visit in 1990 after 13 years in exile.

Caesar Kluck, soft-drink magnate, is found dead in the office of a big radio-broadcasting company. Benjamin Franklin Butts, a sound engineer, discovers that Kluck met his death from cyanogen gas, administered in some mysterious fashion. Harry Jones, head of the company, fires Butts for making the public. Kluck has made many enemies and there are numerous suspects, including Christina "Steenie" MacCorkle, who is in love with Butts; her brother Alexander; radio announcer Dave Chapman; Tony Lisotti, the janitor who had discovered that Kluck was making love to his daughter Maria' Kluck's physician, Doctor Leonard sylvester, and Joe Carney, a racketeer who had been doing Kluck's dirty work. Butts pursues his investigation and his only clue is a deflated toy-advertising balloon he has found next to Kluck's body. Later, Butts discovers Tony;s body in a broom closet and, nearby, finds another deflated balloon, a straw and a pin. He then calls all the suspects together...and solves the mystery.

One of the many New York City community organizations that formed in response to the AIDS epidemic is a writers group for Black Gay Men. In honor of James Baldwin's signature work, Another Country, the group selected the name Other Countries. It held its first writers workshop on June 14, 1986. Over the next year, it developed a three-pronged program of peer critique, performance and publishing. In its 25 years, Other Countries has published three volumes of work by Black gay men and women. The most recent VOICES RISING came out in January 2007. Many past and current members have gone on to publish work that "went through" the workshop. Several who developed their craft in the workshop went on to work in publishing, television and academia. Though many of its founding members died decades ago, their affinity group continues to nurture and foster creativity and appreciation of the life we have, here and now. Other Countries celebrates 30 years in June 2016. The workshop continues as a virtual videoconference held each 2nd and 4th Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Internet with members logging into the OC Virtual Workshop on Hangouts from locations in North America and the Caribbean.

One of the many New York City community organizations that formed in response to the AIDS epidemic is a writers group for Black Gay Men. In honor of James Baldwin's signature work, Another Country, the group selected the name Other Countries. It held its first writers workshop on June 14, 1986. Over the next year, it developed a three-pronged program of peer critique, performance and publishing. In its 25 years, Other Countries has published three volumes of work by Black gay men and women. The most recent VOICES RISING came out in January 2007. Many past and current members have gone on to publish work that "went through" the workshop. STORYLINE:
Veteran South African anti-apartheid activist and newspaper editor Donald Woods died in a Surrey hospital on Sunday, after a long battle with cancer.
He was 67 years old.
Woods was the founder and editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper in East London, South Africa, whose opposition to apartheid eventually forced him into exile.
He was a close friend of Steve Biko, a leader of South Africa's Black Consciousness movement, who died in detention after being tortured by the apartheid security police.
Their relationship was chronicled in the 1987 Richard Attenborough film 'Cry Freedom'.
Woods edited the Daily Dispatch from 1965 to 1977, when he was banned for five years by the apartheid government.
He fled the country for Britain, where he campaigned against apartheid through lecture tours and writing.
Woods returned to South Africa on a visit in 1990 after 13 years in exile.

STORYLINE:
Veteran South African anti-apartheid activist and newspaper editor Donald Woods died in a Surrey hospital on Sunday, after a long battle with cancer.
He was 67 years old.
Woods was the founder and editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper in East London, South Africa, whose opposition to apartheid eventually forced him into exile.
He was a close friend of Steve Biko, a leader of South Africa's Black Consciousness movement, who died in detention after being tortured by the apartheid security police.
Their relationship was chronicled in the 1987 Richard Attenborough film 'Cry Freedom'.
Woods edited the Daily Dispatch from 1965 to 1977, when he was banned for five years by the apartheid government.
He fled the country for Britain, where he campaigned against apartheid through lecture tours and writing.
Woods returned to South Africa on a visit in 1990 after 13 years in exile.

Caesar Kluck, soft-drink magnate, is found dead in the office of a big radio-broadcasting company. Benjamin Franklin Butts, a sound engineer, discovers that Kluck met his death from cyanogen gas, administered in some mysterious fashion. Harry Jones, head of the company, fires Butts for making the public. Kluck has made many enemies and there are numerous suspects, including Christina "Steenie" MacCorkle, who is in love with Butts; her brother Alexander; radio announcer Dave Chapman; Tony Lisotti, the janitor who had discovered that Kluck was making love to his daughter Maria' Kluck's physician, Doctor Leonard sylvester, and Joe Carney, a racketeer who had been doing Kluck's dirty work. Butts pursues his investigation and his only clue is a deflated toy-advertising balloon he has found next to Kluck's body. Later, Butts discovers Tony;s body in a broom closet and, nearby, finds another deflated balloon, a straw and a pin. He then calls all the suspects together...and solves the mystery.

One of the many New York City community organizations that formed in response to the AIDS epidemic is a writers group for Black Gay Men. In honor of James Baldwin's signature work, Another Country, the group selected the name Other Countries. It held its first writers workshop on June 14, 1986. Over the next year, it developed a three-pronged program of peer critique, performance and publishing. In its 25 years, Other Countries has published three volumes of work by Black gay men and women. The most recent VOICES RISING came out in January 2007. Many past and current members have gone on to publish work that "went through" the workshop. Several who developed their craft in the workshop went on to work in publishing, television and academia. Though many of its founding members died decades ago, their affinity group continues to nurture and foster creativity and appreciation of the life we have, here and now. Other Countries celebrates 30 years in June 2016. The workshop continues as a virtual videoconference held each 2nd and 4th Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Internet with members logging into the OC Virtual Workshop on Hangouts from locations in North America and the Caribbean.
