Folks are no doubt excited for next March’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice—which is the culmination of an onscreen superhero battle/team-up we’ve been waiting on for decades—but perhaps Warner Bros. was a tad surprised at just how fervent the fan anticipation would be for the studio’s BvS follow-up Suicide Squad. It’s an ambitious film to be sure, telling a superhero story entirely from the “bad guys’” point of view, but it blends the iconography of the DC Comics library with something the film’s writer and director David Ayer does very well: a family story.
For those unfamiliar, Suicide Squad revolves around a group of villains who are tasked with performing high-risk operations for the government in exchange for commuted sentences. We don’t know exactly what they’ll be after/doing in the movie, but we do know that Jared Leto makes his debut as a radicalized version of The Joker, and the titular “Squad” includes Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc, amongst many others.
Steve recently sat down with Atlas Entertainment Founder and producer Charles Roven, who produced Suicide Squad and is part of the DC Cinematic Universe Brain Trust that works on developing this shared universe slate of films, and while the conversation was tied to the release of the first Warcraft trailer (which Roven produced), it inevitably turned to Suicide Squad.
Roven was more than happy to discuss the film, revealing that we shouldn’t expect an official trailer until the first quarter of next year, so don't expecting more Joker for Christmas. But Roven tackled one subject head on that a lot of people have been fascinated by: Jared Leto’s performance. Leto is a method actor so, in keeping with how he works on all his films, he went method to play The Joker. There have been stories of isolation on set and strange gifts being sent to his co-stars, and Roven confirmed that it was indeed a “different” experience, but one that ultimately served the film:

Suffice it to say, the guy has some experience in bringing DC superhero characters to screen, and he faced one of his toughest challenges yet with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel follow-up that not only serves to expand the DC universe by introducing a new Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), but also laying the foundation for Warner Bros.’ inter-connected universe going forward.
Steve recently got the chance to sit down with Roven for an extended interview tied to last week’s trailer debut for Warcraft, which he also produced, but inevitably the conversation also moved to the DC Universe and, more specifically, Batman v Superman. He spoke about when we’ll next see new footage (hint: very soon), the grounded nature of the film, and more, but first he addressed the concept of “superhero fatigue” and how Warner Bros.’ slate of films hope to keep audiences engaged on an emotional level.

With Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice now playing in theaters around the world, the other day I sat down with producer Charles Roven for an exclusive video interview about the film. During our wide-ranging conversation he talked about if there were dramatic changes during production or if they stayed true to their original script, how they figured out the boundaries of each superhero’s superpowers, setting up a connection to the Wonder Woman movie, what they learned from friends and family screenings and test screenings, how they worked out what to cut for the upcoming extended edition, and more.

Last week I landed an exclusive video interview with Atlas Entertainment’s President and Co-Founder Charles Roven. While I’ve spoken to the prolific producer (full resume here) a number of times for some of his previous movies like The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, Get Smart, and The Dark Knight, this was my first time getting to sit down with him for an extended conversation about the industry and all his upcoming projects.
Over the course of nearly an hour at Atlas’ Beverly Hills office, I was able to go in-depth with Roven about Atlas Entertainment, the Warcraft movie, The Great Wall, the Uncharted movie, future DC movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, and so much more. As someone that is excited about a number of his upcoming projects, I tried to ask all the things fans want to know. Since our extended talk covered so many topics, I’m breaking up the interview into smaller sections starting with the Warcraft movie and Atlas Entertainment.
In the interview below, Roven talks about how the industry has changed over the past two decades, if the talking drama is dead in Hollywood, how the industry has been moving into the event business, the way Atlas decides what they’re going to produce, how Atlas has three divisions at the company so they can produce all sorts of films, and more. By now, folks are very familiar with the way Marvel Studios works. What at first seemed like a very out of the ordinary approach—forming a “Brain Trust” of creative-types to hash out the studio’s inter-connected universe plans—has now become commonplace for any big studio wanting to enact a big multi-franchise blueprint. The one that’s probably of most interest to fans, of course, is the Brain Trust over at Warner Bros., which is putting together that studio’s slate of inter-connected DC Comics adaptations.
Obviously Warner Bros. has a very different approach to how it makes its superhero films than Marvel does, but up until now, little was known about exactly how they set about crafting their own interconnected universe. Luckily, Steve recently got the chance to sit down with Atlas Entertainment President and Founder Charles Roven, who produced Christopher Nolan’s Batman films as well each entry in the current slate of DC adaptations, from Man of Steel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to the upcoming Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman.

He was married to producer Dawn Steel until her death in 1997. He is now married to Stephanie Haymes, the daughter of entertainers Dick Haymes and Fran Jeffries.

Jared Leto
Jared Joseph Leto (/lɛtoʊ/) (born December 26, 1971) is an American actor, singer, songwriter, and director. After starting his career with television appearances in the early 1990s, Leto achieved recognition for his role as Jordan Catalano on the television series My So-Called Life (1994). He made his film debut in How to Make an American Quilt (1995) and received critical praise for his performance in Prefontaine (1997). David Ayer
David Ayer (born January 18, 1968) is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for being the writer of Training Day (2001), and the director and writer of Harsh Times (2005), Street Kings (2008), End of Watch (2012), Sabotage (2014), and Fury (2014). In September 2014, Ayer was announced as both the writer and director for the DC Comics film Suicide Squad, scheduled for release in 2016.
Early life and education
Ayer was born in Champaign, Illinois, on January 18, 1968, and grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota, and Bethesda, Maryland, where he was kicked out of his house by his parents as a teenager. Ayer then lived with his cousin in Los Angeles, California, where his experiences in South Central Los Angeles became the inspiration for many of his films. Ayer then enlisted in the United States Navy as a submariner. According to Shia LaBeouf, who starred in Ayer's film Fury, Ayer is "a full subscriber to Christianity."
Career
Ayer's screenplay, Squids, was based on his experiences as a U.S. Navy Submarine sailor, and he also integrated those experiences from his service in the U.S. Navy into rewrites of the submarine thriller U-571. Ayer collaborated on the screenplay for The Fast and the Furious in 2001. Ayer wrote the screenplay for crime drama Dark Blue, and it was his research into the Los Angeles Police Department that led to his most prominent screenplay, Training Day. Ayer signed a contract to write a screenplay for S.W.A.T., which was based on his original story pitch. The film was directed by Clark Johnson and released in 2003.

Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character is a warrior princess of the Amazons (which are based on the Amazons of Greek mythology) and is known in her homeland as Princess Diana of Themyscira. When outside her homeland, she is sometimes known by the secret identity Diana Prince. She is gifted with a wide range of superhuman powers and superior combat and battle skills. She possesses an arsenal of weapons, including the Lasso of Truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets, a tiara which serves as a projectile, and (in older stories) a range of devices based on Amazon technology.
Wonder Woman was created by the American psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston. The character first appeared in All Star Comics #8 in December 1941 and first cover-dated on Sensation Comics #1, January 1942. The Wonder Woman title has been published by DC Comics almost continuously except for a brief hiatus in 1986. Her depiction as a heroine fighting for justice, love, peace, and gender equality has led to Wonder Woman being widely considered a feminist icon. Created during World War II, the character was initially depicted fighting Axis military forces as well as an assortment of colorful supervillains, although over time her stories came to place greater emphasis on characters, deities, and monsters from Greek mythology. In the decades since her debut, Wonder Woman has gained a formidable cast of enemies bent on eliminating the Amazon, including classic villains such as Ares, Cheetah, Circe, Doctor Psycho, and Giganta, along with more recent adversaries such as the First Born. Last week I landed an exclusive video interview with Atlas Entertainment’s President and Co-Founder Charles Roven. While I’ve spoken to the prolific producer (full resume here) a number of times for some of his previous movies like The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, Get Smart, and The Dark Knight, this was my first time getting to sit down with him for an extended conversation about the industry and all his upcoming projects. Over the course of nearly an hour at Atlas’ Beverly Hills office, I was able to go in-depth with Roven about Atlas Entertainment, the Warcraft movie, The Great Wall, the Uncharted movie, future DC movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, and so much more. As someone that is excited about a number of his upcoming projects, I tried to ask all the things fans want to know. Since our extended talk covered so many topics, I’m breaking up the interview into smaller sections starting with the Warcraft movie and Atlas Entertainment. The one that’s probably of most interest to fans, of course, is the Brain Trust over at Warner Bros., which is putting together that studio’s slate of inter-connected DC Comics adaptations. Obviously Warner Bros. has a very different approach to how it makes its superhero films than Marvel does, but up until now, little was known about exactly how they set about crafting their own interconnected universe. It’s an ambitious film to be sure, telling a superhero story entirely from the “bad guys’” point of view, but it blends the iconography of the DC Comics library with something the film’s writer and director David Ayer does very well: a family story.
For those unfamiliar, Suicide Squad revolves around a group of villains who are tasked with performing high-risk operations for the government in exchange for commuted sentences. We don’t know exactly what they’ll be after/doing in the movie, but we do know that Jared Leto makes his debut as a radicalized version of The Joker, and the titular “Squad” includes Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc, amongst many others.

But Roven tackled one subject head on that a lot of people have been fascinated by: Jared Leto’s performance. Leto is a method actor so, in keeping with how he works on all his films, he went method to play The Joker. There have been stories of isolation on set and strange gifts being sent to his co-stars, and Roven confirmed that it was indeed a “different” experience, but one that ultimately served the film:

Atlas Entertainment President and producer Charles Roven is not only intimately involved in the DC Cinematic Universe, he was key in changing the landscape of the superhero genre as we know it with Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Suffice it to say, the guy has some experience in bringing DC superhero characters to screen, and he faced one of his toughest challenges yet with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel follow-up that not only serves to expand the DC universe by introducing a new Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), but also laying the foundation for Warner Bros.’ inter-connected universe going forward.
Steve recently got the chance to sit down with Roven for an extended interview tied to last week’s trailer debut for Warcraft, which he also produced, but inevitably the conversation also moved to the DC Universe and, more specifically, Batman v Superman. He spoke about when we’ll next see new footage (hint: very soon), the grounded nature of the film, and more, but first he addressed the concept of “superhero fatigue” and how Warner Bros.’ slate of films hope to keep audiences engaged on an emotional level.

Last week I landed an exclusive video interview with Atlas Entertainment’s President and Co-Founder Charles Roven. While I’ve spoken to the prolific producer (full resume here) a number of times for some of his previous movies like The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, Get Smart, and The Dark Knight, this was my first time getting to sit down with him for an extended conversation about the industry and all his upcoming projects.
Over the course of nearly an hour at Atlas’ Beverly Hills office, I was able to go in-depth with Roven about Atlas Entertainment, the Warcraft movie, The Great Wall, the Uncharted movie, future DC movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, and so much more. By now, folks are very familiar with the way Marvel Studios works. What at first seemed like a very out of the ordinary approach—forming a “Brain Trust” of creative-types to hash out the studio’s inter-connected universe plans—has now become commonplace for any big studio wanting to enact a big multi-franchise blueprint. The one that’s probably of most interest to fans, of course, is the Brain Trust over at Warner Bros., which is putting together that studio’s slate of inter-connected DC Comics adaptations.
Obviously Warner Bros. has a very different approach to how it makes its superhero films than Marvel does, but up until now, little was known about exactly how they set about crafting their own interconnected universe. Luckily, Steve recently got the chance to sit down with Atlas Entertainment President and Founder Charles Roven, who produced Christopher Nolan’s Batman films as well each entry in the current slate of DC adaptations, from Man of Steel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to the upcoming Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman.
As one of the key producers involved in bringing these massive superhero properties to life, Steve took the opportunity to ask Roven if the Warner Bros. DC Cinematic Universe Brain Trust is indeed made up of himself, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns.

In a report from THR, veteran producer Charles Roven, who has worked on every DC Comics movie at Warners since 2005’s Batman Begins is no longer producing certain DC movies. Talks are underway to have Roven shift to a different role going forward, likely as an executive producer who is not involved in the day-to-day productions. The move comes as Warner Bros. continues to scrutinize its DC movies in the wake of Batman v Superman’s performance with audiences and fans at the box office.
Marvel made a great impression with their recently released casting announcement for Thor: Ragnarok, but as for an official confirmation of the plot, we have yet to be given a synopsis. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Mark Ruffalo shed some light on what we can expect from the movie in which his Bruce Banner/Hulk role has been confirmed. When he was asked about the size of his role in the movie, he described it as an “intergalactic buddy road movie with Banner and Thor” with him also talking about how much Hulk we can expect. Thor: Ragnarok opens in theatres November 3rd, 2017.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Simon Pegg and Mike Myers are joining Margot Robbie, Max Irons and Dexter Fletcher for Vaughn Stein’s noir thriller Terminal, which is currently shooting in Hungary. Terminal follows two hit men played by Fletcher and Irons as they embark on a borderline suicide mission for a mysterious employer and a large paycheck.

A new extended look at Independence Day Resurgence has been released, giving fans five whole minutes of plot and character, setting up what seems to be the major set pieces and story from the movie. The next chapter in the Independence Day franchise shows humanity using recovered alien technology and collaborating with the nations of Earth on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare them for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force when they return to finish what they started.
Deadline is reporting that Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions are set to make an untitled family animated project at STX Entertainment. Sandler has a long-standing working relationship with STX chairman and CEO Robert Simonds and together they’ve made eight films with Sandler in the lead role including such popular entries as Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.
Illumination Entertainment has released its first trailer for Sing the newest talking animal movie that tells the story of Buster Moon voiced by Matthew McConaughey, a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Now facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces
