Plot:
The opening title reads: "A comedy with a smile--and perhaps a tear". As she leaves the charity hospital and passes a church wedding, Edna deposits her new baby with a pleading note in a limousine and goes off to commit suicide. The limo is stolen by thieves who dump the baby by a garbage can. Charlie the Tramp finds the baby and makes a home for him. Five years later Edna has become an opera star but does charity work for slum youngsters in hope of finding her boy. A doctor called by Edna discovers the note with the truth about the Kid and reports it to the authorities who come to take him away from Charlie. Before he arrives at the Orphan Asylum Charlie steals him back and takes him to a flophouse. The proprietor reads of a reward for the Kid and takes him to Edna. Charlie is later awakened by a kind policeman who reunites him with the Kid at Edna's mansion.

Carl Miller (actor)
Carl Miller (August 9, 1893 – January 22, 1979), was an American film actor. He appeared in 44 films between 1917 and 1942 and remains perhaps best-known for his roles in two Charlie Chaplin films: The Kid (1921) and A Woman of Paris (1923). He was born in Wichita County, Texas and died in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Edna Purviance
Edna Purviance (/ˈɛdnə pərˈvaɪəns/; October 21, 1895 – January 11, 1958) was an American actress during the silent movie era. She was the leading lady in many of Charlie Chaplin's early films and in a span of eight years, she appeared in over 30 films with him.
Early life
Olga Edna Purviance was born in Paradise Valley, Nevada, to Louis and Madison Gates Purviance. When she was three, the family moved to Lovelock, Nevada, where they assumed ownership of a hotel. Her parents divorced in 1902, and her mother later married Robert Nurnberger, a German plumber. Growing up, Purviance was a talented pianist.
She left Lovelock in 1913, and attended business college in San Francisco.
Career
In 1915, Purviance was working as a secretary in San Francisco when actor and director Charlie Chaplin was working on his second film with Essanay Studios, working out of Niles, California, one hour southeast of San Francisco, in Southern Alameda County. He was looking for a leading lady for A Night Out. One of his associates noticed Purviance at a Tate's Café in San Francisco and thought she should be cast in the role. Chaplin arranged a meeting with her and, although he was concerned that she might be too serious for comedic roles, she won the job.

Jackie Coogan
John Leslie "Jackie" Coogan (October 26, 1914 – March 1, 1984) was an American actor who began his movie career as a child actor in silent films.Charlie Chaplin's film classic The Kid (1921) made him one of the first child stars in film history. Many years later, he became known as Uncle Fester on the 1960s sitcom The Addams Family. In the interim, he sued his mother and stepfather over his squandered film earnings and provoked California to enact the first known legal protection for the earnings of child performers, widely known as the Coogan Act.
Early life and early career
He was born as John Leslie Coogan in 1914 in Los Angeles, California, to John Henry Coogan, Jr. and Lillian Rita (Dolliver) Coogan,. He began performing as an infant in both vaudeville and film, with an uncredited role in the 1917 film Skinner's Baby. Charlie Chaplin discovered him in the Orpheum Theatre, a vaudeville house in Los Angeles, on the stage doing the shimmy, a popular dance at the time. Coogan's father was also an actor. Jackie Coogan was a natural mimic and delighted Chaplin with his abilities. Chaplin cast him in a small role in A Day's Pleasure (1919). He was Chaplin's irascible companion in The Kid (1921) and the following year played the title role in Oliver Twist, directed by Frank Lloyd. Coogan was one of the first stars to be heavily merchandised. Peanut butter, stationery, whistles, dolls, records, and figurines were among the Coogan-themed merchandise on sale.

Charlie Chaplin
Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977) was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death in 1977, and encompassed both adulation and controversy.
Chaplin's childhood in London was one of poverty and hardship. As his father was absent and his mother struggled financially, he was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of nine. When he was 14, his mother was committed to a mental asylum. Chaplin began performing at an early age, touring music halls and later working as a stage actor and comedian. At 19 he was signed to the prestigious Fred Karno company, which took him to America. Chaplin was scouted for the film industry, and began appearing in 1914 for Keystone Studios. He soon developed the Tramp persona and formed a large fan base. Chaplin directed his own films from an early stage, and continued to hone his craft as he moved to the Essanay, Mutual, and First National corporations. By 1918, he was one of the best known figures in the world.

The Kid (1921 film)
The Kid is a 1921 American silent comedy-drama film written by, produced by, directed by, and starring Charlie Chaplin, and features Jackie Coogan as his adopted son and sidekick. This was Chaplin's first full-length film as a director (he had been a co-star in 1914's Tillie's Punctured Romance). It was a huge success, and was the second-highest grossing film in 1921, behind The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. In 2011, The Kid was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Daring in its combination of comedic and dramatic elements,The Kid is widely considered one of the greatest films of the silent era.
Plot
An unwed woman (Edna Purviance) leaves a charity hospital carrying her newborn son. An artist (Carl Miller), the apparent father, is shown with the woman's photograph. When it falls into the fireplace, he first picks it up, then throws it back in to burn up. The woman decides to abandon her child in the back seat of an expensive automobile with a handwritten note imploring the finder to care for and love the baby. However, the car is stolen. When the two thieves discover the child, they leave him on the street. A tramp (Charlie Chaplin) finds the baby. Unwilling at first to take on the responsibility, he eventually softens and names the boy John. Elsewhere, the woman has an apparent change of heart and returns for the baby, but is heartbroken and faints upon learning of the baby being taken away.

It stars Lon Chaney, Sr., Patsy Ruth Miller, Norman Kerry, Nigel de Brulier, Brandon Hurst. The film is probably the second most famous adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel, following the critically acclaimed, much reissued 1939 masterpiece by RKO. The film is most notable for the grand sets that recall 15th century Paris as well as Lon Chaney's performance and spectacular make-up as the tortured bell-ringer of Notre Dame. The film elevated Chaney, already a well-known character actor, to full star status in Hollywood. Soon after leaving Saturday Night Live, Macdonald co-wrote and starred in the "revenge comedy" Dirty Work (1998), directed by Bob Saget and co-starring Artie Lange, Jack Warden, Don Rickles, Chevy Chase, Christopher McDonald, Traylor Howard, and Chris Farley (this would be Farley's last movie; the film was dedicated in his memory.) Later that year, Macdonald voiced the character of Lucky the dog in the Eddie Murphy adaptation of Dr. Dolittle. He reprised the role in both Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001) and Dr. Dolittle 3 (2006). Macdonald voiced the character of Death on an episode of Family Guy. Because of a conflict with his stand-up comedy schedule, he was unavailable to voice the character for his next appearance; Death has since been voiced by Adam Carolla. In 1999, Macdonald starred in the sitcom The Norm Show (later renamed Norm), co-starring Laurie Metcalf, Artie Lange and Ian Gomez. It ran for three seasons on ABC. Macdonald voiced Hardee's restaurants' (Carl's Jr. on the U.S. west coast) costumed mascot, the Hardee's star in advertisements. Macdonald appeared on several Miller Lite commercials that year. He appeared on the September 1999 Saturday Night Live primetime special celebrating the program's 25th year on the air. Macdonald was one of only three former Weekend Update anchors to introduce a retrospective on the segment (the others being Chevy Chase and Dennis Miller).
Macdonald returned to Saturday Night Live to host the October 23, 1999, show. In his opening monologue, he expressed resentment at having been fired, then concluded that the only reason he was asked to host was because "the show has gotten really bad" since he left,[14] echoing a perennial criticism of the show. The next episode, airing November 6, 1999, and hosted by Dylan McDermott, featured a sketch wherein Chris Kattan, as the androgynous character Mango, is opening letters from celebrity admirers and, after opening the last one, says "[The letter is from] Norm Macdonald—who is that?" Earlier in 1999, Macdonald made a cameo appearance in the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon. When Michael Richards refused to portray himself in the scene reenacting the famous Fridays incident in which Kaufman throws water in his face, Macdonald stepped in to play Richards, although he is never referred to by name.

Norman Gene "Norm" Macdonald[1] (born October 17, 1963)[2] is a Canadian stand-up comedian, writer, producer and actor. He is best known for his five seasons as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, which included anchoring Weekend Update for three years. Early in his career, he wrote for the sitcom Roseanne and made appearances on shows including The Drew Carey Show and NewsRadio. He starred in The Norm Show from 1999 to 2001. Comedy Central named him #83 on the five-part miniseries 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time. He is noted as a favorite talk show guest of David Letterman, Howard Stern, Dennis Miller, and Conan O'Brien. His brother is Canadian journalist Neil Macdonald, of CBC News
Soon after leaving Saturday Night Live, Macdonald co-wrote and starred in the "revenge comedy" Dirty Work (1998), directed by Bob Saget and co-starring Artie Lange, Jack Warden, Don Rickles, Chevy Chase, Christopher McDonald, Traylor Howard, and Chris Farley (this would be Farley's last movie; the film was dedicated in his memory.) Later that year, Macdonald voiced the character of Lucky the dog in the Eddie Murphy adaptation of Dr. Dolittle. He reprised the role in both Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001) and Dr. Dolittle 3 (2006). Macdonald voiced the character of Death on an episode of Family Guy. Because of a conflict with his stand-up comedy schedule, he was unavailable to voice the character for his next appearance; Death has since been voiced by Adam Carolla. In 1999, Macdonald starred in the sitcom The Norm Show (later renamed Norm), co-starring Laurie Metcalf, Artie Lange and Ian Gomez. It ran for three seasons on ABC. Macdonald voiced Hardee's restaurants' (Carl's Jr. on the U.S. west coast) costumed mascot, the Hardee's star in advertisements. Macdonald appeared on several Miller Lite commercials that year. He appeared on the September 1999 Saturday Night Live primetime special celebrating the program's 25th year on the air. Macdonald was one of only three former Weekend Update anchors to introduce a retrospective on the segment (the others being Chevy Chase and Dennis Miller).
Macdonald returned to Saturday Night Live to host the October 23, 1999, show. In his opening monologue, he expressed resentment at having been fired, then concluded that the only reason he was asked to host was because "the show has gotten really bad" since he left,[14] echoing a perennial criticism of the show. The next episode, airing November 6, 1999, and hosted by Dylan McDermott, featured a sketch wherein Chris Kattan, as the androgynous character Mango, is opening letters from celebrity admirers and, after opening the last one, says "[The letter is from] Norm Macdonald—who is that?" Earlier in 1999, Macdonald made a cameo appearance in the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon. When Michael Richards refused to portray himself in the scene reenacting the famous Fridays incident in which Kaufman throws water in his face, Macdonald stepped in to play Richards, although he is never referred to by name.

CLEVELAND (WLS) -- A short keynote speech from Melania Trump, introduced by her husband and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, closed out the chaotic first day of the 2016 Republican National Convention at the Quicken Loans Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Chaos reigned supreme as the day began. It took two votes, but delegates at the Republican National Convention were able to approve the rules that'll govern the convention.
The rules won approval in an initial voice vote, and then anti-Donald Trump delegates became raucous and started chanting, "Call the roll!" Others drowned them out with chants of "USA!"
There was a brief break before Steve Womack - the Arkansas congressman who was chairing the proceedings - returned to the podium and called for a second voice vote.
He said for a second time that the rules had passed.
The anti-Trump delegates wanted a state-by-state roll call vote on the rules. That would have been a drawn-out process and could have exposed party divisions.
Monday morning, Illinois delegates bellied up to a big breakfast sprinkled with a stern warning.
"I can guarantee you: It is now ironclad that nothing, nothing is going to stop Donald Trump from being our nominee," said Illinois State Rep. and Trump Illinois co-chair John Cabello.
That message was for the handful of Illinois delegates still not on the Trump train. Trump's team is circulating a pledge to state delegates asking them to confirm they'll back the businessman on nomination night.
Rep. David Harris (R-Arlington Heights) is what you might call a "conscientious objector."
"What we think is somewhat irrelevant; Donald Trump 1500-plus delegates, he's going to be the nominee." Rep. Harris says. Harris backed Kasich during the primary and intends to vote for him again as a delegate.
"I'd like to think I'm a man of conscience," he says.
"We have one goal in November and that's to defeat Hillary Clinton. We all need to be behind our nominee," said Illinois delegate Mark Fratella.
At Monday morning's Illinois meeting there was a telling moment: when asked to raise their hands if they were attending their first convention, a large group of hands went up - a sign of the upheaval Trump's rogue candidacy has caused in the party.
The Illinois delegation also includes a teenager who is possibly the youngest delegate at the convention from any state. Carl Miller, 17, of Downer's Grove has been crisscrossing the Midwest with his grandfather, meeting countless candidates.
"I'm an alternate delegate elected from Illinois, 17 years old, I'll turn 18 just in time for Election Day," Miller says.
"It's been a blast," says Art Siml, Miller's grandfather. "If it was me, a 75-year-old, I'd watch it all from you guys on TV, but if it's with my grandson I love, he's one of 11 grandchildren, you can't beat it!"
FIRST DAY OF SPEAKERS MAKE CASE FOR TRUMP
Hours of primetime speakers, more than two dozen in all, worked to make a case for Donald Trump and change.
"Our country is in a bad spot right now, you can see it. You can feel it everywhere," said actor Scott Baio.
"The vast majority of Americans today do not feel safe, they fear for their children, they fear for themselves. They fear for our police officers that are being targeted," said former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Patricia Smith, whose son was one of four Americans killed in Benghazi, spoke about Hillary Clinton, who was Secretary of State at the time of that attack in Libya.
"That's right Hillary Clinton for prison," Smith said. "She deserves to be in stripes."
It was a repeated theme.
"We all know she likes her pantsuits. But we should send her an email and tell her she deserves a bright orange jumpsuit," said Darryl Glenn, U.S. Senate candidate from Colorado.
While presidential candidates typically do not appear until the final night or two of their conventions, Donald Trump bucked tradition and introduced his wife Melania, the final speaker of the night. She delivered a short speech touting Trump's business leadership qualities and praising him as a husband and father.
This evening Illinois' Republicans will gather at a high end steakhouse to meet with Ohio Governor John Kasich, the man many in the so-called "establishment" wanted to be the nominee.
"I got a lot of cheers and applause, not many votes, but what the hell - give it your best," Kasich said of his primary run.
Kasich is stiffing Donald Trump, not even setting foot in the convention hall, let alone offering an endorsement. Trump's campaign fired back, calling him "petulant" and "an embarrassment to the party" because he won't back Trump.
Some of Illinois' top Republicans, including Governor Bruce Rauner and Senator Mark Kirk are passing on the event. Other notable local Republicans skipping the convention include former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, Comptroller Leslie Munger, and North Shore Congressman Bob Dold.

Worries about the effects of video games are not new, from the 1976 arcade release of Death Race, which sparked outrage in the US, to the implication of the game Manhunt in the 2004 murder of teenager Stefan Pakeerah in the UK. However, it seems this fervour has intensified of late. This year, head teachers in Cheshire threatened to report parents who allowed their children to play games rated 18 to the police. In the US, numerous mass shooting are alleged to have been inspired by violent games, while in Australia, major retail chains such as Target and Kmart have taken Grand Theft Auto V off their shelves after online petitions set up by victims of sexual violence. Concerns have also been raised about unhealthy obsessions with fantasy worlds, sparked in 2010 when a South Korean couple became so immersed in an online game which involved caring for a virtual infant that they allowed their own child to die of neglect.
The issue came to a head last year with the Gamergate controversy, when feminist gamers took on perceived sexism in the games industry. Their detractors responded that such complaints were patronising and unnecessary. In particular, actor Adam Baldwin described the controversy as ‘a skirmish in the long culture war’ where feminist campaigners sought to ‘enforce arbitrary social justice rules upon gamers…by stifling varying viewpoints’. His supporters also pointed out that the drive to censor games was hardly liberal.
There is also a wider movement to create socially conscious games as an antidote to the violence and machismo depicted in many popular games. This War of Mine is inspired by the Siege of Sarajevo and aims to help a civilian character survive in a war-torn environment; Migrant Trail has the player guiding a Mexican migrant trying to illegally enter the United States.
Are morally conscious games a necessary response to a toxic gaming culture that has gone unchallenged for too long? Why has the drive to purge violence and sexualised content shifted to those who describe themselves as liberal, when such criticism traditionally came from the conservative right? What is it that makes video games so absorbing to their players? What is the relationship between fantasy and reality?
