Dr. Frank Phillips explains cervical stenosis in young athletes
Northwestern University football player, Jeremy Larkin, retired from the sport this week. The reason is a recent diagnosis of cervical (neck) stenosis, a painful narrowing of the spinal canal. His decision was most likely based on preventing a more serious injury, such as spinal cord damage and/or paralysis. Dr. Frank Phillips, a minimally invasive spine surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, explains this condition which can be present at birth and exacerbated by playing contact sports.
