The New Siberian Islands (Russian: Новосиби́рские острова, Novosibirskiye Ostrova) are an archipelago in the Extreme North of Russia, to the North of the East Siberian coast between the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea north of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic.
The first news about the existence of the New Siberian Islands was brought by a Cossack, Yakov Permyakov, in the beginning of the 18th century. In 1712, a Cossack unit led by M. Vagin reached the Great Lyakhovsky Island. At the beginning of the 19th century, the islands were further explored by Yakov Sannikov, Matvei Gedenschtrom and others.
In 1809–10 Yakov Sannikov and Matvei Gedenschtrom went to the New Siberian Islands on a cartographic expedition. Yakov Sannikov reported the sighting of a "new land" north of Kotelny in 1811. This became the myth of Zemlya Sannikova or Sannikov Land.
In 1886 Eduard von Toll, during his first visit to the New Siberian Islands, thought that he had seen an unknown land north of Kotelny Island. He guessed that this was the so-called Zemlya Sannikova.

In 1893, Nansen took a special round-hulled ship Fram to the New Siberian Islands in the eastern Arctic Ocean, froze her into the pack ice, and waited for the Arctic drift to carry her towards the pole. Impatient with the slow pace and erratic nature of the drift, after 18 months Nansen and Johansen, left the ship with a team of dogs and sledges and made for the pole. They did not reach 90°N but they achieved a record north latitude of 86°13.6′N before a long and parlous retreat over ice and water, attacked by bear and walrus, to eventually reach the safety of Franz Josef Land, where they overwintered in 1895. In 1896, Nansen and Johansen were found and rescued by Jackson. (Of course, the ironies are in that where Nansen froze himself in the ice, we now break it to reach the pole; where he...
Por-Bajin is a mysterious island in Siberia - no one knows why it is there or who really built it. A mysterious island containing a fortress or some sort of prison out in the middle of absolutely nowhere has been discovered in the deepest lake high in the remote mountains of Siberia. Vladmir Putin has visited the site and said, quote "I have been to many places, I Have seen many things, but I have never seen anything of this kind." When you first look at the strange rectangular island of Por-Bajin, it looks like it used to be some sort of fortress....prison...or strange colony. It was determined to have been built around 1,300 years ago. It even has a little walkway that leads into the island....which strangely still remains even after all these centuries. But the strangest part abo...

The song Islands Forever by Siberian on there album With Me. The 11th and final song on the album. On the coastline, under moonlight, we will drive our cars into the lake and drown. That color, it suits you. It makes you look like you've got it together. Why do you hold me up so high? I'm the last one you should look up to. I saw your name in the paper. They can't translate our lover, your love. We're sorry that you couldn't come, but it's a full ride from here to California. Why do you hold me up so high? I'm the last one you should look up to. You always push me all around boy and you say you'll change your life, we'll be just like two birds on a wire. Birds on a wire.

Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. The Cyclades are the small group of islands surrounding Delos int the middle of the Aegean Sea. On these islands the Cycladic culture thrived well before B.C. what, beside the architectural and artistic values, also meant a lifestyle. This lifestyle is sought by the millions of visiting tourists: the narrow, winding alleys, the many characteristic Cycladic houses protected from the sun by venetian blinds and ornamented by geranium and leander. From the taverns resting in the shade of vine-arbours one can see the boats and yachts floating on the sea. The wind from the sea slowly turns the wheels of the windmills, while the beaches are full of happy people.
After the maritime victory over the Swedish army, Peter I the Great decided that he is going to build a city on the small islands and lagoons of the mouth of the river Neva. The Russian, Italian and French masters dreamed wonderful Baroque and Classicist palaces to the banks of the canals. The Church of the Savior on Blood, the Saint Isaac's Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the blue white and gold Smolny and the Winter Palace all make the city of white nights unforgettable. The Hermitage has one of the largest art collections of the world, but for those who find this less than enough, there is the Russian Museum, and the suburbs of Peterhof, Pushkin and Pavlovsk. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► http://goo.gl/HYQdhg Join us. Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America. In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier. Hosted by John Martin & Thomas Morton | Originally released in 2009 at http://vice....

Travel Video about Destination Bella Venezia in Italy. Venice, the fascinating ‘water city’ with a history that dates back more than fifteen hundred years, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. San Marco lies in the heart of the town, the noble Sestiere. The former political centre of the city is now a major destination for those visiting Venice and the splendid architecture of various eras is in abundance. The San Marco Basilica, once the palace chapel of the Doge, is a triumph of Byzantine architecture. A lion, numerous angels, and Saint Mark, adorn its main facade. The Palazzo Ducale, the centre of power of the Republic and the residence of its rulers is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Trade brought riches, and wealth had to be displayed. Thus arose several diverse ...

It's known as Ilha da Queimada Grande, or Snake Island, and it's the only place you will find 2,000 or so of the wholly unique golden lancehead viper, or Bothrops insularis. When you step ashore, with a keen eye you spot one of these snakes roughly every 10 to 15 minutes after clearing the base of the island, and as many as one every six square yards in other parts of the island. This means, as you are walking through the waist-high brush, even with some goo...

As international interest in the Arctic grows, Russia is resuming development of Franz Josef Land, its polar territory situated only 900 km from the North Pole. RT Doc takes a look at the lives of the people laying the foundations for a new town here, while living next door to a group of curious polar bears. Franz Josef Land is the northernmost part of Russia. Included in the "Russian Arctic National Park", it boasts incredible wildlife - with walruses, whales, seals, and polar bears in abundance. The archipelago’s climate is severe, with temperatures falling as low as -52°C. Thick mists and strong winds are common all year round. In winter, the polar night lasts for 128 days, while in summer the sun doesn't set for 20 weeks. Those working here say there is no real colour in the Arctic - ...
Sometimes we all feel like keeping a distance from everyone else, retreating to a remote corner of the world and living like a hermit. Few of us ever actually do it though. This young fisherwoman from the icy island of Sakhalin has opted for a life of solitude but was it really a choice? Anna was born on the remote and icy Sakhalin island. She grew up in a children’s home and when she left, decided that fishing would be her livelihood. It is hard work but Anna strives to be independent and rely on no one but herself. She wants to be equal to men in everything she does and refuses to be seen as a weak woman in need of anyone’s help. She works all day and in her free time plays ice hockey for an otherwise all-men team. Anna loves her cats and takes care of her new-found relatives, but sti...
Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost - and wildest - island, a place totally unlike the rest of the country. Every year, it swings from a bitter Siberian winter into the warmth of a Mediterranean-like summer, when the thaw reveals a landscape changed beyond all recognition. It takes tough animals and tough people with real ingenuity to survive, and even thrive, in this ever-changing place.
