Yale Law School (often referred to as Yale Law or YLS) is the law school of Yale University, located in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. The school's small size and prestige make its admissions process the most selective of any law school in the United States. Established in 1824, Yale Law offers the J.D., LL.M., J.S.D., M.S.L., and Ph.D. degrees in law. Yale Law has been ranked the number one law school in the country by U.S. News and World Report every year since the magazine began publishing law school rankings.
Yale Law has produced a large number of luminaries in law and politics, including United States Presidents Gerald Ford and Bill Clinton. The law school's Lillian Goldman Law Library has been memorialized as the meeting place of Bill Clinton and fellow student Hillary Clinton, the 67th Secretary of State and announced candidate for President of the United States. Former President William Howard Taft was a professor of constitutional law at Yale Law School from 1913 until he resigned to become Chief Justice of the United States in 1921. Alumni also include current United States Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor, as well as a number of former Justices, including Abe Fortas, Potter Stewart and Byron White; several heads of state around the world, including Karl Carstens, the fifth President of Germany, and Jose P. Laurel, the president of the Republic of the Philippines; four current U.S. Senators, and the current deans of six of the top fourteen-ranked law schools in the United States: Yale, Harvard, Chicago, Virginia, Cornell, and Georgetown.
A law school (also known as a law centre or college of law) is an institution specializing in legal education, usually involved as part of a process for becoming a lawyer within a given jurisdiction.
In Brazil, law is studied as an undergraduate program. Students who succesfully complete such programs are awarded a Bachelor of Law and are allowed to take the bar examination, which is held twice a year on a nation-wide basis. Candidates who pass the examination are then allowed to work as attorneys.
The oldest civil law faculty in Canada offering law degrees was established in 1848 at McGill University in Montreal, and the oldest common law faculty in Canada offering law degrees was established in 1883 at Dalhousie University in Halifax. The typical law degree required to practice law in Canada is now the Juris Doctor, which requires previous university coursework and is similar to the first law degree in the United States. There is some scholarly content in the coursework (such as an academic research paper required in most schools). The programs consist of three years, and have similar content in their mandatory first year courses. Beyond first year and the minimum requirements for graduation, course selection is elective with various concentrations such as business law, international law, natural resources law, criminal law, Aboriginal law, etc. Some schools, however, have not switched from LL.B. to the J.D. – one notable university that still awards the LL.B is McGill University.
Barnett "Barney" Frank (born March 31, 1940) is an American politician who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1981 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee (2007–2011) and was a leading co-sponsor of the 2010 Dodd–Frank Act, a sweeping reform of the U.S. financial industry. Frank, a resident of Newton, Massachusetts, is considered the most prominent gay politician in the United States.
Born and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey, Frank graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. He worked as a political aide before winning election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1972. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980 with 52 percent of the vote. He was re-elected every term thereafter by wide margins. In 1987, he publicly came out as gay, after coming out to family, friends and close associates a few years prior, becoming the first member of Congress to do so voluntarily. From 2003 until his retirement, Frank was the leading Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, and he served as committee chairman when his party held a House majority from 2007 to 2011. In July 2012, he married his long-time partner, James Ready, becoming the first member of Congress to marry someone of the same sex while in office. Frank did not seek re-election in 2012, and retired from Congress at the end of his term in January 2013. Frank had expressed interest in serving temporarily in the United States Senate after John Kerry had been confirmed as Secretary of State but was ultimately passed over for Mo Cowan. A biography of Frank was published in 2015.

Each fall, Yale Law School hosts a Student Organization and Journals Fair. Student Organizations and Journals set up tables in the Law School courtyard and representatives from each group are available to speak with new students about what their groups do. There are about fifty student organizations and nine student journals at Yale Law School addressing a variety of topics. These groups offer outlets for substantive discussion and experience and also often are a great way for students to make connections with their peers.
At Yale Law School's moot court finals on December 10, 2007, Enrique Schaerer argued on behalf of the petitioner in Medellín v. Texas. He did so before Judges Jerry Smith, Michael McConnell, and Reena Raggi. Enrique was assigned a difficult position -- one he disagreed with -- to argue for a "sweeping view" of presidential power. Not surprisingly, the judges on the panel peppered him with tough questions. They later awarded him and his teammate, Michael Krouse, the Potter Stewart Prize for best written brief and oral argument.

In this video segment, he answers a question from Yale Law School student Nikhil Sud '13 about whether it's possible for a person who is devoted to the arts but selects a non-creative path to live a truly happy and fulfilling life. The Chubb Fellowship is one of Yale's most distinguished honors, bringing leaders to campus to encourage students interested in public service and the public good.

Customary laws govern the affairs of the family mainly while codes and precedents designed and developed on the imported British common law system enjoy exclusive control and authority over the remaining legal relationships in society. This volume looks at the legal system in outline and the customary law of the Bur mese family in some detail. The customary laws of other indigenous groups, such as the Shans, the Kachins, the Chins, the Kayah, the Mon and the Arakanese, also need to be studied, restated and appraised, for though the laws are similar ...

Taking internal and external evidence into account, Rosemarie Mcgerr suggests that the manuscript was made for Prince Edward of Lancaster, transforming a legal reference work into a book of instruction in kingship, as well as a means of celebrating the Lancastrians rightful claim to the English throne during the Wars of the Roses. A Lancastrian Mirror for Princes also explores the role played by the manuscript as a commentary on royal justice and grace for its later...

In 1992, three hundred innocent men, women, and children who had qualified for political asylum in the United States were forced into a detention camp at the American naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and told they might never be freed. Read your free e-book: http://downloadapp.us/mebk/50/en/B00APXOWU6/book The development of the modern Yale Law School is deeply intertwined with the story of a group of students in the 1960s who worked to unlock democratic visions of law and social change that they associated with Yale's past and with the social climate in which they lived. During a charged moment in the history of the United States, activists challenged senior professors, and the resulting clash pitted young against old in a very human story. By demanding changes in admissions, curriculum, grading, and law practice, Laura Kalman argues, these students transformed Yale Law School and the future of American legal education.inspired by Yale's legal realists of the 1930s, Yale law students between 1967 and 1970 spawned a move...
Read your free e-book: http://downloadapp.us/mebk/50/en/B00144GG9A/book The entity that became the Yale Law School started life early in the nineteenth century as a proprietary school, operated as a sideline by a couple of New Haven lawyers. The New Haven school affiliated with Yale in the 1820s, but it remained so frail that in 1845 and again in 1869 the University seriously considered closing it down. From these humble origins, the Yale Law School went on to become the most influential of American law schools. In the later nineteenth century the School instigated the multidisciplinary approach to law that has subsequently won nearly universal acceptance. In the 1930s the Yale Law School became the centre of the jurisprudential movement known as legal realism, which has ever since shaped ...

On October 5, 2013, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton received the Yale Law School Alumni Association Award of Merit. The event coincided with Yale Law School’s Alumni Weekend, during which Secretary Clinton celebrated her 40th reunion with fellow Yale Law School classmates. The following video includes Secretary Clinton’s remarks during that award ceremony. She reminisces about her time as a student at Yale Law School, and the experiences that sparked a lifelong passion about children’s welfare.
Cristina Rodríguez, Professor of Law at Yale Law School, delivered the Pierre Genest Memorial Lecture at Osgoode Hall Law School on Monday, February 25, 2013. In her talk, Rodríguez explored the relationship between immigrant incorporation and the concept of "civil rights" often used to frame the immigration question in the United States. She looked at the distinction between what it means to be respected as a "person" (civil rights as a legal regime) and what it means to be incorporated into "the people" (civil rights as ongoing social struggle). Rodríguez served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel in the U.S. Department of Justice prior to her appointment to the Yale faculty in 2012.
Akhil Reed Amar, a Yale law professor, delivered the 100th Sibley Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 4:30 p.m. in the Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom at the University of Georgia School of Law. Almost a century after American colonists secured their freedom from England, internal conflict surrounding the legitimacy of slavery forced our still-evolving nation to evaluate its core values in a “struggle over the meaning of democracy itself.”
Secretary Clinton will be presented the Award of Merit by Yale Law School Dean Robert C. Post '77 before addressing law school alumni, students, faculty and staff in Yale University's Woolsey Hall on Saturday, October 5th, 2013. Since 1957, the Yale Law School Association, the alumni organization of Yale Law School, has presented the Award of Merit annually to an esteemed graduate of Yale Law School or to a person who has served as a full-time member of the Yale Law School faculty for at least ten years. The recipients of the Award are recognized for having made a substantial contribution to public service or to the legal profession.
Siegel spoke on "The Woman Question: From Suffrage to Abortion and Beyond." She discussed how the discourse by proponents and opponents of abortion rights in the late 20th century has become a debate about the question of women's roles and helped shape current constitutional law.
