I Just Want To Be Your Everything By Andy Gibb (RSO, 1977)

The Bee Gees had made a big American comeback after breaking up once and being dropped from their label. Now in 1976, they added 4 more Top 10 songs including 2 more #1s and back to back Gold albums. Robert Stigwood, owner of RSO records and the Bee Gees manager decided to sign another Gibb up and bring him across the pond to conquer the US. Only 19 when he hit #1 in July 1977, Andy Gibb was adding fuel to the fire as well becoming the fire itself that was the Bee Gees inferno. They scorching everything in their path, writing hit after hit as well as replaced each other at the Top of the Charts. It happened fast for young Andy, too fast it seems, and quickly as he rose, he would descend as rapidly.

When Stigs signed up lil Andy, he had him & Barry come to his house in Bermuda to write some songs. Over the weekend, they wrote (Love Is)Thicker Than Water and Barry (although some say Andy co-wrote it) finished ‘Everything’ one evening on his guitar. Inspired by Andy’s new wife, Kim, who had been left alone in Australia with their soon-to-be born daughter, Barry wrote a tender, mid-tempo that served as a tribute to her as well as a direct promise to all the teenage girls who instantly made him a Teen Beat sensation. And while Andy seemed like a younger shaved Barry, he still had about 10% of Robin’s warble.

But of course I have to chuckle at the lyrics because of how silly and confusing they are. It does sound like he wrote it in a few hours. But that’s the power of Gibb, folks. He could have written a song about the sign of the beast and it would’ve sold a million copies.

For so long. You and me been finding each other for so long

The line is awkward, but It’s proto-Barry lyrics. Except how does one keep finding something over & over for a long time? Not to self, don’t give him my car keys.

And the feeling that I feel for you is more than strong, girl

More than strong? That would be stronger or strongest. Again, too simple. I actually feel like an idiot dissecting this.

Take it from me
If you give a little more than you’re asking for your love will turn the key

OK now we’re getting to it. Andy is down with this chic, but doesn’t feel she’s on the same page. So his idea is for her to give more into the relationship than he gives. Then he’ll know it’s real.

Darling mine, I would wait forever for those lips of wine
Build my world around you, darling. This love will shine girl

OK which is it, Andy? Will you wait forever for her to make a move? Or are you going to start plans about redecorating the kitchen on the house you bought both of you?

Watch it and see
If you give a little more than you’re asking for your love will turn the key

I, I just want to be your everything
Open up the heaven in your heart and let me be
The things you are to me and not some puppet on a string

Whoa, hold on. That sounds like a ultamatum. I thought we were going to wait forever. And if you really like a puppet, what makes you think she’s not gonna always treat you like that? How do you know there’s any heaven in that heart? Maybe its a portal to hell for you sit and wait forever with the other Pinocchios.

Oh, if I stay here without you, darling, I will die
I want you laying in the love I have to bring
I’d do anything to be your everything

Uh, oh. Now’s he’s resorting to ‘I’ll kill myself if you don’t love me.” That’s kind of desperate and psychotic. How did this ever work on the ladies? And what exactly would they be laying in when you bring your love?

Side note: Listen to the chorus the 2nd time around and tell if you think he’s saying I Just Want to be Your Hairy thing. That’s what it sounds like to me.
