Iran (/aɪˈræn/ or i/ɪˈrɑːn/;Persian: Irān – ایران [ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), also known as Persia (/ˈpɜːrʒə/ or /ˈpɜːrʃə/), officially the Islamic Republic of Iran (جمهوری اسلامی ایران – Jomhuri ye Eslāmi ye Irān [d͡ʒomhuːˌɾije eslɒːˌmije ʔiːˈɾɒːn]), is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest country in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world. With 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th-most-populous country. It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and an Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has long been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.

When war between Israel and Iran seemed imminent, Israeli graphic designer Ronny Edry shared a poster on Facebook of himself and his daughter with a bold message: "Iranians ... we [heart] you." Other Israelis quickly created their own posters with the same message -- and Iranians responded in kind. The simple act of communication inspired surprising Facebook communities like "Israel loves Iran," "Iran loves Israel" and even "Palestine loves Israel." Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine year old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power - forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable. As she gets older, Marjane's boldness causes her parents to worry over her continued safety. And so, at age fourteen, they make the difficult decision to send her to school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land, she endures the typic...

Travel video about destination Iran. Iran, formerly known as Persia, is a land of magical splendour, ancient architecture and Oriental hospitality. Tehran has been the capital of the Persian Empire since 1795. Founded by Mohammed Aga Khan it is a vibrant place that ranks among the most densely populated cities on Earth. Its biggest transformation in its recent history was due to religious leader, Ayatollah Khomeyni, who in 1979 established the Iranian Republic, a theocracy within the teachings of the Koran. The Saad-Abad Palace complex was the first summer residence of the Qadjarian kings. Following several extensions, from the 1920’s eighteen palaces were used by Reza Shah Pahlevi and his family. The city of Kashan prospered under the Safavid, Shah Abbas The First, who designed the Bagh...

When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city. We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. At the more modest and bygone Tajrish Bazaar, she's the proverbial kid in a candy store, wading through copper and carpet vendors in search of sweet snacks, such as grape molasses and lavasak (fru...

My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country. CITIES The capital Tehran is most people's starting point, and in this busy city you can see ostentatious ornaments from the royal household in the crown jewels museum, and wander around the Shah's old residence, Golestan Palace. Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastria...

Welcome to Mashhad! I travelled from Tehran to Mashhad by train, this is a continuation of my travels to the capital city where I spent most of my time. I wasn't feeling very well during this trip but I tried to visit a few places and film as much as I could while in the beautiful city of Mashhad, Iran. Many people are pleasantly surprised with Iran and just how kind, friendly and welcoming the people are. It's a very rich culture and of late extremely misunderstood, which is heartbreaking as there is so much to learn and experience.. from the food to the flamboyant festive nature of these wonderful people. You will not be disappointed with this fascinating country, and the same goes for Pakistan, although they are both rather different, they are equally amazing! Hope you enjoy! My Firs...

A summary of the three most adventurous weeks in our lives so far. Altough the slightly unstable security situation was shadowing the whole experience a bit, we really enjoyed our time there! Some of the very best people we met on the entire 232 days of our trip, were from Pakistan! Thanks to all of them for making it a really unforgettable experience, especially our friends in Lahore deserve all the gratitude we can give them! These three men all came to Germany in 2015 as refugees. Although they all arrived in Berlin at the same time, their lives have taken very different paths. This documentary tells the stories of three refugees who can be taken as representative of the many who have found shelter in Germany. They were chosen at random after their arrival in Berlin in March 2015, and journalist Matthias Deiß spent the following two years filming what happened to them. The result is an interim balance - two years after the wave of refugees reached Germany. Their lives in their new home could hardly be more different, which is why they are so typical. When I have my day
I come down from the hills
With light on my face
And death at my heels
My voice it bends
But my voice does not break
When I have my day
I enter the white gates
With chairs lined up straight
For all of God's children
They wonder the last knot
"Are your fingers long enough to play?"
When I have my day
My brothers learn courtly
With daggers in hand
Hatch plans to disrow me
But my brothers are precious
And the chaft must be burned away
When I have my day
The song that I sing
Carries back to the source
And back through them and [me]
Did you know others
Your voice, your king
