Patch is both a medical doctor and a clown, but he is also a social activist who has devoted 30 years to changing America's healthcare system, a system that he describes as expensive and elitist.
He believes that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process and therefore, true health care must incorporate those aspects of life. Doctors and patients in his model relate to each other on the basis of mutual trust and patients receive plenty of time from their doctors. Allopathic doctors and practitioners of alternative medicine will work side by side in Patch's model. Ifyou think that all sounds like a utopian impossibility, it isn't. Patch and his colleagues practiced medicine at the Gesundheit Institute together in West Virginia that way for 12 years in what Patch refers to as their "pilot project." In that time they saw 15,000 patients. From that experience onward Patch Adams has devoted his life to the study of what makes people happy.

Patch Adams is a 1998 comedy-drama film starring Robin Williams. Directed by Tom Shadyac, it is based on the life story of Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams and the book Gesundheit: Good Health is a Laughing Matter by Adams and Maureen Mylander. The film was a box-office success, grossing over twice its budget in the United States alone; however, it was poorly received by most critics.
In 1969, Hunter Adams (Robin Williams) is a troubled man who voluntarily commits himself into a mental institution. Once there, he finds that helping his fellow inmates gives him a purpose in life and earns the nickname "Patch". Because of this he aspires to become a medical doctor and two years later enrolls at Virginia Medical University, being the oldest first year student. He questions the school's approach to medical care, and clashes with the school's Dean Walcott (Bob Gunton), who believes that doctors must treat patients and not bond with them as people. Because of this and other incidents, including a prank during a medical conference, he is expelled from the school, although he is later reinstated due to his methods actually improving the health of patients. Adams encourages medical students to cultivate relationships with nurses and learn their interviewing skills early, and argues that death should be treated with dignity and even humor.

Patch is both a medical doctor and a clown, but he is also a social activist who has devoted 30 years to changing America's healthcare system, a system that he describes as expensive and elitist. He believes that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process and therefore, true health care must incorporate those aspects of life. Doctors and patients in his model relate to each other on the basis of mutual trust and patients receive plenty of time from their doctors. Allopathic doctors and practitioners of alternative medicine will work side by side in Patch's model. Ifyou think that all sounds like a utopian impossibility, it isn't. Patch and his colleagues practiced medicine at the Gesundheit Institute together in West Virginia that way for 12 years in what Patch refers to as their "pilot project." In that time they saw 15,000 patients. From that experience onward Patch Adams has devoted his life to the study of what makes people happy. -

The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. He believes that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process and therefore, true health care must incorporate those aspects of life. Doctors and patients in his model relate to each other on the basis of mutual trust and patients receive plenty of time from their doctors. Allopathic doctors and practitioners of alternative medicine will work side by side in Patch's model. Ifyou think that all sounds like a utopian impossibility, it isn't. Patch and his colleagues practiced medicine at the Gesundheit Institute together in West Virginia that way for 12 years in what Patch refers to as their "pilot project." In that time they saw 15,000 patients. From that experience onward Patch Adams has devoted his life to the study of what makes people happy.

His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

Hunter Doherty "Patch" Adams, mayormente conocido como el doctor de la risoterapia (Washington D. C., 28 de mayo de 1945),1 es un médico estadounidense, activista social, diplomático y escritor. Patch Adams ci racconta il suo percorso di medico, il suo sogno straordinario di creare un modello ospedaliero efficace e basato sui valori di compassione e gioia di vivere.
Il punto principale è che la medicina è un business e i più poveri non possono accedervi. Per questo motivo Patch Adams ha iniziato diversi anni fa un progetto per erogare gratuitamente le cure ospedaliere. Il concetto alla base è che non si dovrebbe pagare per avere delle cure, indipendentemente dalla propria condizione economica.
Un altro aspetto importante è la quantità e la qualità del tempo che il medico mette a disposizione del paziente. Quello che è importante è infatti il rapporto medico-paziente. Dietro un malato spesso c'è una persona infelice e insoddisfatta, che ha bisogno di riscoprire la gioia di vivere.
Amicizia, curiosità, senso della meraviglia, speranza, passione: la vera domanda è come stimolare tutto ciò nelle persone? Come aiutare la gente a trovare il significato della propria vita? ... Per vivere bene e nella gioia... E anche per morire bene e nella gioia?
Per superare la sua depressione giovanile, Patch Adam ha detto a se stesso che se il mondo in cui viveva non gli piaceva, allora doveva fare di tutto per cambiarlo.
Se non ti piace quello che vedi, allora fai la rivoluzione e cambialo! Fai la rivoluzione dell'amore... Della passione! Se vuoi pace e giustizia, se questa è la tua passione, allora adoperati per ottenerli!
Possiamo plasmare in ogni attimo la persona che siamo e che vogliamo essere. Possiamo vivere in base alle nostre intenzioni. Che intenzioni abbiamo per noi stessi? Se ciascuno di noi non si impegna ad autocostruirsi, la società lo farà per noi, con un risultato ben diverso dalle nostre speranze.
Patch Adams e la sua associazione stanno costruendo un ospedale basato su questi principi, dove non esista gerarchia medica né pagamento in denaro per le cure.
