When an earthquake and tsunami struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant complex in 2011, neither the quake nor the inundation caused most of the damage and contamination. Rather, it was the aftereffects — specifically, the lack of cooling for the reactor cores and spent fuel, due to a shutdown of outside power — that caused most of the harm.
A new design for nuclear plants built on floating platforms, modeled after those used for offshore oil drilling, could help avoid such consequences in the future. Such floating plants would be designed to be automatically flooded by the surrounding seawater in a worst-case scenario, providing sufficient cooling to indefinitely prevent any melting of fuel rods, or escape of radioactive material.
The concept is being presented this week at the Small Modular Reactors Symposium, hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, by MIT associate professor of nuclear science and engineering (NSE) Jacopo Buongiorno along with others from MIT, the University of Wisconsin, and Chicago Bridge and Iron, a major nuclear plant and offshore platform construction company.

PETERHEAD, SCOTLAND — Scotland's notoriously strong winds could pan out to be a blessing in disguise after the Scottish government recently approved plans for a floating wind farm right off of the Scottish coast.
According to the Guardian, Statoil, a Norwegian energy company, plans to build a floating wind farm 15 miles off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland by the end of 2017.
The floating wind farm, called the Hywind floating wind farm, will consist of five, 258-meter-high floating wind turbines. Each will have a floating steel tube filled with ballast as their base and they will be tethered to the seafloor by three moorings.
Each of the five wind turbines will have a six-megawatt capacity, and together they will be able to power an estimated 20,000 homes.
Because they're not actually attached to the seabed, these types of wind turbines are cheaper than traditional ocean turbines and can be placed in deeper waters. Existing offshore wind turbines, which need to stand on concrete or steel foundations, are expensive if anchored to depths greater than 40 meters, reported the Guardian.
Statoil's goal with this $232 million pilot project is to demonstrate a way to harness wind power that can increase the global market potential for turbines.
Offshore wind is a key component of Europe's plan to source 20 percent of its total energy consumption from renewables, reported the Independent.

CHINA — Beijing is doubling down on nuclear energy development in an effort to pump up power in the South China Sea.
According to Wang Yiren, vice director of the State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defence, China plans to build a floating nuclear power plant over the next five years. About 20 floating stations are expected to be built and posted in the disputed islands, Science and Technology Daily reported.
China claims ownership of the entire South China Sea, despite counter claims by Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei. The Chinese have control over a number of islands in the Spratlys and Paracels, where diesel generators are currently the main power source. The generators are neither efficient nor environmentally friendly.
With a floating nuclear platform, China hopes to provide a stable source of power to residents and troops based in the Chinese-controlled disputed islands. It also aims to promote offshore gas and oil exploits in the area.
Floating power stations are believed to be less prone to natural disasters. Emergencies like a melting core could be prevented by simply pumping in cooling seawater.
Developing nuclear power will also help cut down carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions.
Ultimately, China wants its nuclear power capacity to reach 58 million kilowatts by 2020.
Research on the core technologies has already been carried out. Ally Russia has been developing a similar facility for Arctic waters, so China is seeking cooperation in a bid to speed up their plans.

HUAINAN CITY, CHINA — A new floating solar farm constructed on a lake in Huainan City, China is said to be the largest in the world.
According to the South China Morning Post, the farm is made up of 160,000 solar panels. These panels reportedly can produce electricity for up to 15,000 homes.
The farm is built over a lake that emerged from a collapsed coal mine, reported Phys.org.
The water from the lake helps cool the panels’ electronics, reported the Smithsonian Mag, citing a Telegraph report on Europe’s largest solar farm.
The farm was linked to Huainan City’s power grid last month, reported the South China Morning Post.

Floating water wheel power My latest experiment in hydro power. This uses a 50 gal barrel, 3/8" rebar, a Fisher & Paykel Stator & Rotor Assembly and assorted hardware. It produces enough electricity to charge 12v NiCa battery and light 6 LEDs. My first test the paddles were straight on axis. This configuration caused the down stream paddles to lift a lot of water. This caused the generator to push down in to the water and slows RPM. The current blade angle lifts the unit about a foot and increases the RPM. It produces 3 AC circuits no load 26v. After diodes 24vDC no load all circuits connected together. Useable voltage around 12v with load because the 3 phase and battery the lights do not flicker. I do not have a good way to measure the watts but at current Rpm I guess about 12 watt. For the summer when stream flow is 1/8 the current level a framed in under shoot will drop water onto paddles about 14". I believe the RPMs will be faster. -

China has announced that the largest floating photovoltaic (PV) facility on earth has finally been completed and connected to the local power grid. Long reviled for its carbon emission record, this is the Chinese government’s latest achievement in its ongoing effort to lead the world in renewable energy adoption. Located in the city of Huainan in the Anhui province, the 40-megawatt facility was created by PV inverter manufacturer Sungrow Power Supply Co. Ironically, the floating grid itself was constructed over a flooded former coal-mining region. Floating solar farms are becoming increasingly popular around the world because their unique design addresses multiple efficiency and city planning issues. These floating apparatuses free up land in more populated areas and also reduce water evaporation. The cooler air at the surface also helps to minimize the risk of solar cell performance atrophy, which is often related to long-term exposure to warmer temperatures. This is just the first of many solar energy operations popping up around China. In 2016, the country unveiled a similar 20MW floating facility in the same area. China is also home to the Longyangxia Dam Solar Park, a massive 10-square-mile, land-based facility touted as the largest solar power plant on earth. This transition to solar is in large part due to the rapidly plummeting cost of the technology itself. By 2020, China could reduce prices offered to PV developers by more than a third with solar power plants projected to rival coal facilities within a decade. The nation has also announced plans to increase its use of non-fissile fuel energy sources by 20 percent. An annual report released by NASA and NOAA determined that 2016 was the warmest year on record globally, marking the third year in a row in which a new record was set for global average surface temperatures. Waller Marine is a world leader in the design and construction of power barges. In 2010, Waller Marine, Inc. was awarded the contract to construct what would become the largest floating power plant in the world. The project consisted of building two 300' x 100' barges, each equipped with GE 7FA turbines, that have a combined power generating capacity in excess of 340 MegaWatts of electricity. This was the first time that GE 7FA turbines were ever installed on a mobile platform. The barges were built at the Signal International yard in Orange, TX and were launched in 180 days. Waller Marine designed and managed the construction of the barges, along with the installation of the power plants on the barges, utilizing over 900 men working in shifts, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. This video shows the highlights and progress of the construction, the launch of the barges and their subsequent movement by tug and heavy lift vessel. When an earthquake and tsunami struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant complex in 2011, neither the quake nor the inundation caused most of the damage and contamination. Rather, it was the aftereffects — specifically, the lack of cooling for the reactor cores and spent fuel, due to a shutdown of outside power — that caused most of the harm. A new design for nuclear plants built on floating platforms, modeled after those used for offshore oil drilling, could help avoid such consequences in the future. Floating water wheel power My latest experiment in hydro power. This uses a 50 gal barrel, 3/8" rebar, a Fisher & Paykel Stator & Rotor Assembly and assorted hardware. It produces enough electricity to charge 12v NiCa battery and light 6 LEDs. My first test the paddles were straight on axis. This configuration caused the down stream paddles to lift a lot of water. This caused the generator to push down in to the water and slows RPM. The current blade angle lifts the unit about a foot and increases the RPM. It produces 3 AC circuits no load 26v. After diodes 24vDC no load all circuits connected together. Useable voltage around 12v with load because the 3 phase and battery the lights do not flicker. I do not have a good way to measure the watts but at current Rpm I guess about 12 watt. For ...

PETERHEAD, SCOTLAND — Scotland's notoriously strong winds could pan out to be a blessing in disguise after the Scottish government recently approved plans for a floating wind farm right off of the Scottish coast.
According to the Guardian, Statoil, a Norwegian energy company, plans to build a floating wind farm 15 miles off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland by the end of 2017.

Because they're not actually attached to the seabed, these types of wind turbines are cheaper than traditional ocean turbines and can be placed in deeper waters. Existing offshore wind turbines, which need to stand on concrete or steel foundations, are expensive if anchored to depths greater than 40 meters, reported the Guardian.
Statoil's goal with this $232 million pilot project is to demonstrate a way to harness wind power that can increase the global market potential for turbines.
Offshore wind is a key component of Europe's plan to source 20 percent of its total energy consumption from renewables, reported the Independent.

PETERHEAD, SCOTLAND — Scotland's notoriously strong winds could pan out to be a blessing in disguise after the Scottish government recently approved plans for a floating wind farm right off of the Scottish coast.
According to the Guardian, Statoil, a Norwegian energy company, plans to build a floating wind farm 15 miles off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland by the end of 2017.
The floating wind farm, called the Hywind floating wind farm, will consist of five, 258-meter-high floating wind turbines. Each will have a floating steel tube filled with ballast as their base and they will be tethered to the seafloor by three moorings.
Each of the five wind turbines will have a six-megawatt capacity, and together they will be able to power an estimated 20,000 homes.
Because they're not actually attached to the seabed, these types of wind turbines are cheaper than traditional ocean turbines and can be placed in deeper waters. Existing offshore wind turbines, which need to stand on concrete or steel foundations, are expensive if anchored to depths greater than 40 meters, reported the Guardian.
Statoil's goal with this $232 million pilot project is to demonstrate a way to harness wind power that can increase the global market potential for turbines.
Offshore wind is a key component of Europe's plan to source 20 percent of its total energy consumption from renewables, reported the Independent.

CHINA — Beijing is doubling down on nuclear energy development in an effort to pump up power in the South China Sea.
According to Wang Yiren, vice director of the State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defence, China plans to build a floating nuclear power plant over the next five years. About 20 floating stations are expected to be built and posted in the disputed islands, Science and Technology Daily reported.
China claims ownership of the entire South China Sea, despite counter claims by Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei. The Chinese have control over a number of islands in the Spratlys and Paracels, where diesel generators are currently the main power source. The generators are neither efficient nor environmentally friendly.
With a floating nuclear platform, China hopes to provide a stable source of power to residents and troops based in the Chinese-controlled disputed islands. It also aims to promote offshore gas and oil exploits in the area.
Floating power stations are believed to be less prone to natural disasters. Emergencies like a melting core could be prevented by simply pumping in cooling seawater.
Developing nuclear power will also help cut down carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions.
Ultimately, China wants its nuclear power capacity to reach 58 million kilowatts by 2020.
Research on the core technologies has already been carried out. Ally Russia has been developing a similar facility for Arctic waters, so China is seeking cooperation in a bid to speed up their plans.

HUAINAN CITY, CHINA — A new floating solar farm constructed on a lake in Huainan City, China is said to be the largest in the world.
According to the South China Morning Post, the farm is made up of 160,000 solar panels. These panels reportedly can produce electricity for up to 15,000 homes.
The farm is built over a lake that emerged from a collapsed coal mine, reported Phys.org.
The water from the lake helps cool the panels’ electronics, reported the Smithsonian Mag, citing a Telegraph report on Europe’s largest solar farm.
The farm was linked to Huainan City’s power grid last month, reported the South China Morning Post.

Floating water wheel power
My latest experiment in hydro power. This uses a 50 gal barrel, 3/8" rebar, a Fisher & Paykel Stator & Rotor Assembly and assorted hardware. It produces enough electricity to charge 12v NiCa battery and light 6 LEDs. My first test the paddles were straight on axis. This configuration caused the down stream paddles to lift a lot of water. This caused the generator to push down in to the water and slows RPM. The current blade angle lifts the unit about a foot and increases the RPM. It produces 3 AC circuits no load 26v. After diodes 24vDC no load all circuits connected together.
Useable voltage around 12v with load because the 3 phase and battery the lights do not flicker. I do not have a good way to measure the watts but at current Rpm I guess about 12 watt.
For the summer when stream flow is 1/8 the current level a framed in under shoot will drop water onto paddles about 14". I believe the RPMs will be faster.

China has announced that the largest floating photovoltaic (PV) facility on earth has finally been completed and connected to the local power grid. Long reviled for its carbon emission record, this is the Chinese government’s latest achievement in its ongoing effort to lead the world in renewable energy adoption.
Located in the city of Huainan in the Anhui province, the 40-megawatt facility was created by PV inverter manufacturer Sungrow Power Supply Co. Ironically, the floating grid itself was constructed over a flooded former coal-mining region.
Floating solar farms are becoming increasingly popular around the world because their unique design addresses multiple efficiency and city planning issues. These floating apparatuses free up land in more populated areas and also reduce water evaporation. The cooler air at the surface also helps to minimize the risk of solar cell performance atrophy, which is often related to long-term exposure to warmer temperatures.
This is just the first of many solar energy operations popping up around China. In 2016, the country unveiled a similar 20MW floating facility in the same area. China is also home to the Longyangxia Dam Solar Park, a massive 10-square-mile, land-based facility touted as the largest solar power plant on earth.
This transition to solar is in large part due to the rapidly plummeting cost of the technology itself. By 2020, China could reduce prices offered to PV developers by more than a third with solar power plants projected to rival coal facilities within a decade. The nation has also announced plans to increase its use of non-fissile fuel energy sources by 20 percent.
An annual report released by NASA and NOAA determined that 2016 was the warmest year on record globally, marking the third year in a row in which a new record was set for global average surface temperatures. That said, if we as a species hope to reverse this dire trend, initiatives like this and others will need to be adopted around the globe.

This was the first time that GE 7FA turbines were ever installed on a mobile platform. The barges were built at the Signal International yard in Orange, TX and were launched in 180 days. Wind and waves can be useful potential for energy generation and recreational sailing, but they're troublesome in excess. They must be confronted if we are to build cities in the open sea. One way that shore-side communities protect themselves from waves is by constructing a 'breakwater', which is a pile of rocks or other heavy materials that form an artificial barrier against the waves. Alan Lum joined Principle Power Inc. (formerly Marine Innovation & Technology) in 2011. He graduate from UC Berkeley with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Although we've always known it, one fact that was revealed in crystal clarity during our soon-to-be published location study is this: there is virtually no place on the oceans of this globe where you can avoid the occurrence of wind-driven waves. Wind and waves can be useful potential for energy generation and recreational sailing, but they're troublesome in excess. They must be confronted if we are to build cities in the open sea.
One way that shore-side communities protect themselves from waves is by constructing a 'breakwater', which is a pile of rocks or other heavy materials that form an artificial barrier against the waves. Of course, this is not a very practical approach for a seastead in the deep ocean. But you could instead build a 'floating breakwater', like a floating atoll, to create a giant oasis of calm water in the center. What's more, rather than just 'blocking' the waves, it just seems logical to harness the wave-energy and convert it to electrical power!
Understandably, to protect a floating city at sea, the floating breakwater must be enormous; perhaps one or two kilometers in diameter. So this is on the very long-term development list at the Institute. But even the longest journey begins with a single step, and thanks to the efforts of a pair of bright and enthusiastic interns from the University of Southampton, the Institute has taken a great leap forward in this endeavor. Elie Amar (a naval architect student) and Jorge Suarez (a mechanical engineering student) teamed their talents this past summer, scouring the internet, library collections and the patent office to compile an impressive review of technology related to floating breakwaters and wave energy conversation. To put their findings into context, they thoroughly and systematically assessed the different technologies and identified those that are the most promising for further development by the Institute. Although their report is extensive, it's an easy read (even for non-techies) and there are lots of pictures. Check out the paper here or the slideshow here!

This strategy was implemented to ensure, that IF for any reason the conversion of the ARK to Re-Use failed, the Ship could simply be scrapped, in the same way as it is now. In addition a £3 million pre-delivery security was required in the form of a bond to remove all commercial risk, and as further "belt and braces", a £1 per Megawatt hour decommissioning security was also put in place up to a maximum amount of £3 Million for the post delivery scrapping fund. Finally, the additional potential tax revenues which would have accrued each and every year for the next 25 years or so, would have been in the amount of £25 - £30 Million per annum for NI, PAYE and Corporation taxes.
The Video also explains how the Government are throwing away, and continue to, literally throw away good ships, which are simply NOT at the end of their economic life. These former ex-navy ships have been kept in extremely good condition by the Royal Navy over the years. The Government really should look to re-use these national strategic assets. The perception by those in charge is that these ships are absolute liabilities. They are NOT. These Vessels could help the nation towards solving many many of the problems it is facing in these difficult economic times.
To inherit a 38 Billion black hole from the previous Government is indeed a difficult problem to face. However, to simply continue to sell an entire "well looked after" fleet off for less than Circa 1% of the original £1.5 Billion build cost, is just NOT helping towards stimulating our economy either. If these ships were wrecks, and write offs, it would be understandable to Scrap them, but they simply are NOT.
Give these good Ships and our great industry a chance and they will all bare good fruit !

Petronas’ Floating LNG Facility (PFLNG 1), Malaysia
PETRONAS’ first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility officially received its name, marking another milestone for Malaysia’s national oil and gas corporation in the global LNG business arena on 4 March 2016.
The PFLNG SATU was named at a ceremony held by PETRONAS, together with its strategic partners Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME) and Technip, at the DSME shipyard here in Okpo, South Korea.
PETRONAS’ President and Group CEO, Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said that the floating LNG facility signified a breakthrough achievement not only for the company but also for Malaysia.
“The PFLNG SATU is a testament to the engineering capabilities of PETRONAS and its partners. Today, we have pushed the boundaries and turned our technological aspirations of having an LNG plant on a floating vessel into reality,” added Datuk Wan Zulkiflee.
The floating LNG facility is a significant achievement and a game changer in the global LNG business as it paves the way for opportunities to monetise gas resources from remote, marginal and stranded fields, which would otherwise be uneconomical to develop via conventional means.
The PFLNG SATU will be moored at Malaysia’s Kanowit gas field, 180 kilometres offshore Sarawak and has the capacity to produce 1.2 million tonnes of LNG per year. It will play a significant role in PETRONAS’ efforts to unlock the gas reserves in Malaysia's remote and stranded fields
The momentous occasion in Okpo was also attended by President and Chief Executive Officer of DSME, Mr. Sung Leep Jung and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Technip, Mr. Thierry Pilenko
Mr. Jung in his speech said, “This project has been a remarkable experience for PETRONAS and the DSME/Technip consortium and today marks the successful completion of construction for PFLNG SATU. This achievement, coupled with HSE record of 17 million hours of No Lost Time Injuries is indeed a significant feat for the partnership.
“We have built a trustful and long term-relationship with PETRONAS over the years and are very proud today, with our partner DSME, to have met the challenges of this game-changing project,” Mr Pilenko added in his speech.
The ceremony proceeded with a rope cutting formality by the PFLNG SATU Lady Sponsor, Datin Dr. Azura Ahmad Tajuddin.
Guests were then given a guided tour of the PFLNG SATU which included the vessel’s modules and topside equipment namely the Liquefaction System, Cargo Containment System and Pre-treatment Process.
The floating LNG facility will support PETRONAS’ global LNG portfolio and enhance its reputation as a preferred and reliable LNG supplier.
The PFLNG SATU is expected to be Ready for Sail Away in the second quarter of 2016.

He was part of the team that designed and fabricated the WindFloat Prototype in Portugal. He was the lead drafter and a quality assurance engineer for the project. During his time at the shipyard, he acted as a field engineer and oversaw the construction.
As he gained experience in the field, he developed a strong passion for designing floating structures. In his position as a naval architect at PPI, he specializes on the hydrodynamics modeling of the various WindFloat projects and other floating structures. He works on concept designs for other semi-submersible platforms by adapting the WindFloat structure. He has been involved in projects for other forms of renewables such as wave energy devices. He continues to support the development of the WindFloat and performs vital hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis for structural design.

Other proposed structures have included a refitted oil platform, a decommissioned anti-aircraft platform, and custom-built floating islands.[1]
No one has created a state on the high seas that has been recognized as a sovereign state. The Principality of Sealand is a disputed micronation formed on a discarded sea fort near Suffolk, England.[2] The closest things to a seastead that have been built so far are large ocean-going ships sometimes called "floating cities", and smaller floating islands.
The term combines the words sea and homesteading. At least two people independently began using it: Ken Neumeyer in his book Sailing the Farm (1981) and Wayne Gramlich in his article "Seasteading – Homesteading on the High Seas" (1998).
