Erik Michielsen: What has taking direction as a stylist taught you about giving direction as an art director?
Lulu Chen: Well, I was lucky enough to work with a lot of different art directors. And if I had been an art director coming up the ranks, just as an art director, I think I would’ve been limited to how many different approaches and different people that I could’ve worked with, so I was very lucky and I worked with a lot of really talented art directors and creative directors. And what I learned from them is some really great ways on prepping jobs, how their approach was, how they communicate, and then not to sound negative but also what not to do. So, you know, all the things to do and strive for, and then some of the things that maybe, you know, I should try not to do.
So my take away from that is that organization is really helpful. And sometimes it’s hard because you’re wearing the creative hat, but you really have to get things done in a timely manner, you know, there’s always deadlines. And there’s a lot of money at stake, you know, photo shoots are expensive, you have to get certain things done in a day or two days, and it’s a lot of pressure, to see how other people handle that, to see how people communicate well—actually, how they also motivated and inspired their teams, was really nice to see. So I did learn a lot as a stylist. I was able to observe.
Erik Michielsen: And so now you’re on the other side of the fence.
Lulu Chen: Oh, definitely. I definitely try and keep all those things in mind, you know, all the things that worked for me, or that I really appreciated, and I try and do that as well. But it’s funny because a lot of people tell me that I’m so nice, and—which you’d think is a compliment but sometimes I am like, “Did they not think it’s genuine?” Because I like someone speaking to me in a certain way so I’m going to try and speak to everyone else in that tone, you know. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not gonna be able to get my job done, you know. But I think it’s always nicer to talk to people in a nice way, right? Yeah, it’s like I don’t have—I don’t wanna go there unless I really have to.

Art director
Art director is the title for a variety of similar job functions in theater, advertising, marketing, publishing, fashion, film and television, the Internet, and video games.
it is the charge of a sole art director to supervise and unify the vision. In particular, the art director is in charge of the overall visual appearance and how it communicates visually, stimulates moods, contrasts features, and psychologically appeals to a target audience. The art director makes decisions about visual elements used, what artistic style to use, and when to use motion.
One of the most difficult problems that art directors face is to translate desired moods, messages, concepts, and underdeveloped ideas into imagery. During the brainstorming process, art directors, co-workers, and clients are engaged in imagining what the finished piece or scene might look like. At times, an art director is ultimately responsible for solidifying the vision of the collective imagination while resolving conflicting agenda and inconsistencies between the various individual inputs.

Erik Michielsen: What has taking direction as a stylist taught you about giving direction as an art director?
Lulu Chen: Well, I was lucky enough to work with a lot of different art directors. And if I had been an art director coming up the ranks, just as an art director, I think I would’ve been limited to how many different approaches and different people that I could’ve worked with, so I was very lucky and I worked with a lot of really talented art directors and creative directors. And what I learned from them is some really great ways on prepping jobs, how their approach was, how they communicate, and then not to sound negative but also what not to do. So, you know, all the things to do and strive for, and then some of the things that maybe, you know, I should try not to do.
So my take away from that is that organization is really helpful. And sometimes it’s hard because you’re wearing the creative hat, but you really have to get things done in a timely manner, you know, there’s always deadlines. And there’s a lot of money at stake, you know, photo shoots are expensive, you have to get certain things done in a day or two days, and it’s a lot of pressure, to see how other people handle that, to see how people communicate well—actually, how they also motivated and inspired their teams, was really nice to see. So I did learn a lot as a stylist. I was able to observe.
Erik Michielsen: And so now you’re on the other side of the fence.
Lulu Chen: Oh, definitely. I definitely try and keep all those things in mind, you know, all the things that worked for me, or that I really appreciated, and I try and do that as well. But it’s funny because a lot of people tell me that I’m so nice, and—which you’d think is a compliment but sometimes I am like, “Did they not think it’s genuine?” Because I like someone speaking to me in a certain way so I’m going to try and speak to everyone else in that tone, you know. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not gonna be able to get my job done, you know. But I think it’s always nicer to talk to people in a nice way, right? Yeah, it’s like I don’t have—I don’t wanna go there unless I really have to.

Il progetto di marketing strategico turistico Elba, the Napoleon Experience® è un nuovo modo di intendere la dimensione del viaggio alla scoperta della bellezza e dei segreti dei territori e del locus dell’isola d’Elba e della figura di Napoleone, inteso come grande viaggiatore attraverso l’arte, la moda, ed il mondo virtuale e tecnologico.
L’ideazione e la direzione artistica del progetto, realizzato con il metodo di Rigenerazione Turistica esperienziale Urbana e Territoriale, è degli architetti Maristella De Giuseppe e Donato Grieco, membri fondatori dell’Associazione AB-OUT, Architectural Bureau – Osservatorio Urbano Territoriale.
VisitElba ne ha curato la produzione esecutiva nella persona di Maurizio Goetz, Destination Manager dell’Isola d’Elba, e la direzione della comunicazione social è di Andrea Rossi, Marketing & Experience Manager di VisitElba.
Le creazioni artigianali ed artistiche, la sperimentazione nel mondo virtuale e tecnologico-digitale, le eccellenze produttive del territorio, la rigenerazione urbana, la moda e l’arte assieme, danno vita a una storia di racconti in divenire. Il fil rouge che lega tutte queste storie all’Elba è duplice: il personaggio di Napoleone e l’idea del viaggio. Sono stati coinvolti 26 stilisti ed oltre 200 gli artisti da tutto il mondo, selezionati per interpretare lo spirito più autentico dell’Isola d’Elba.
I creatori di moda, gli artisti, ed i fotografi, i video maker del backstage dello shooting ,quattro giovani promesse della NABA, affianco al team di AB-OUT, composto da esperti di rigenerazione urbana e marketing strategico turistico, hanno creato una collaborazione in un processo tecnico-artistico-creativo reagendo all’influsso delle possibilità offerte da un luogo straordinario come l’Elba.
Il racconto di questo viaggio attraverso lo spazio e il tempo nei luoghi iconici dell’Elba, lo innesca Aurora, lo Spirito dell’Elba, che accompagnerà Alexandre Florian, impersonificazione del viaggiatore vocazionale dell’Elba, e lontano discendente del figlio illegittimo di Napoleone di cui porta lo stesso nome: la ricchezza e la diversità dei paesaggi e delle esperienze che l’Isola può offrire al viaggiatore, toccheranno positivamente il giovane protagonista.
Elba, the Napoleon Experience®: Fashion si propone di esplorare nuovi linguaggi della comunicazione digitale, utilizzando la dimensione del viaggio nel tempo e nello spazio, tra passato, presente e futuro. Per questo si è scelto di rievocare l’idea del Grand Tour e renderne meta proprio l’isola d’Elba. Per la narrazione in forma di diario epistolare di viaggio è stata fatta la scelta di optare per un racconto per immagini, i cui personaggi sono rappresentati da attori professionisti Marilù Pipitone e Renato Paioli. E’ stato allestito un set cinematografico per dare vita ad un prodotto multimediale, declinando con strumenti contemporanei i racconti illustrati degli antichi cantastorie, che affascinavano le genti girando per le città, e che potrà essere fruita e rivissuta liberamente dal viaggiatore vocazionale dell’isola d’Elba sul sito dedicato, nel museo virtuale, e su un canale dedicato al progetto su CNLIVE.
Il progetto è stato pubblicato su di un canale appositamente creato sul sito CNLIVE del Gruppo Condè Nast, con la supervisione tecnologica di Dino Tognato e Lorenzo Piano, del network you360, che ne ha allestito un prodotto web multimediale composto da fotografie panoramiche a 360 gradi e vari altri contenuti visivi, raccogliendo le due parti del progetto Elba – The Napoleon Experience®: Fashion e Elba – The Napoleon Experience®: Mail Art, ideate e curate dagli architetti Maristella De Giuseppe e Donato Grieco, del gruppo AB-OUT.

BellyDance was in Spain is much earlier than what the majority of the people thinks, the first BellyDancers were comming from Lebannon on the times of the Phoenicians from the 11th Century B.C. until 5th Century B.C. , since then when the Arab family of the Umayyad came to Spain, they saw that was a beautiful country, this is why they bautizied as Al Andalus which means "The Paradise", the Arabs brought back their new knowledge, their new religion and also their art, but then they discovered that the spanish women from the north of Spain in the area known as Basque country, were more successful singers and dancers than their own women back in their arab world, so from that moment they started to get the students from the Basque, bring them to Damascus and Egypt and train them to be a great dancer back in Al Andalus, those dancers become to be known as Al Andalus dancers. The Arabs known more by the spaniards in a despective way as The Moorish stay in Spain from the year 711 until their expulsion in 1609. And just before their expulsion, the Al Andalus dance started to get into fussion with the Gypsies, creating after few centuries of fussioning both dances, a new form of dance known as Flamenco.
BellyDance didn't come back to Spain until the 1980's with the end of the Catholic regime of Franco. First BellyDancers to be named performing in Spain on the 1980's are: Sahar Samara (Alia Shams), the sisters Samah and Laila Rangel, Gloria Alba, Teresa Rambha, then afterwards on late 80's first BellyDance schools in Spain were Las Pirámides by the egyptian male teacher Shokry Mohamed on year 1990 in Madrid, Academia de Danzas Árabes by Alia Shams on year 1994 in Seville the first one in Andalusia, El Karnak founded on 1995 in Madrid, from early 90's the first students from these first BellyDance teachers and Schools started to appear dancers and teachers like Amora Shams daughter and student of Alia Shams and Helena Rull student of Teresa Niembro that both of them they still keep teaching, and from entering the new century started the boom of BellyDance in Spain, all the new schools and dancers developped from these original dance teachers and schools named in these lines.
Belly dance in Australia[edit]
The first wave of interest for belly dancing in Australia was during the late 1970s to 1980s with the influx of migrants and refugees escaping troubles in the Middle East, including drummer Jamal Zraika. These immigrants created a lively social scene including numerous Lebanese and Turkish restaurants, providing employment for belly dancers. Rozeta Ahalyea is widely regarded as the "mother" of Australian belly dance, training early dance pioneers such as Amera Eid and Terezka Drnzik. Belly dance has now spread across the country, with vibrant belly dance communities in every capital city and many regional centres.
Belly dance in the United Kingdom[edit]
Belly dance has been in evidence in the UK since the early 1960s. During the 1970s and 1980s, there was a thriving Arabic club scene in London, with live Arabic music and bellydancing a regular feature,[22] but the last of these closed in the early 1990s.[23] Several prominent members of the British bellydance community began their dance careers working in these clubs.
Today, there are fewer traditional venues for Arabic dance in the UK, however there is a large amateur bellydance community. JWAAD, The Raqs Sharqi Society and other groups and individuals have developed "teacher training" for belly dancers.[24][25] Networks for the British belly dance community include the Mosaic Arabic Dance Network (MADN)[26] and the Northern Arabic Dance Association (NADA),[27] both of which publish their own community magazines.Several international bellydance festivals are now held in Britain. In addition, there are a growing number of competitions, which have increased in popularity in recent years.
The UK bellydance scene leans strongly towards the Egyptian/Arabic style, with little Turkish influence. American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion bellydance are also popular.Belly dance in Lebanon[edit]
Lebanese style belly dance is somewhere between the Egyptian and Turkish styles. Lebanese dance takes from the classic oriental dance, but still incorporates a fiesty, modern edge. There are large steps, backward leans to the torso, twisting hip rotatations, large and busy arms and lots of shimmies. The types of techniques that are used in Lebanese style dance are quick layered shimmies and subtle internal movements. Lebanese dancers sometimes include kicks, splits, deep back bends, and Turkish drops.Belly dance outside the Middle East[edit]

Scott Campbell (Scott C) is a maker of paintings, illustrations, comics, kid’s books and video games. He studied illustration at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, focusing on comic and children’s book illustration. Watching a film is a magical experience and one of the key figures behind bringing alive this fictional world to reality, is an art director. Meet Sahi Suresh, one of the rising ace art directors in Telugu film industry.
In his career spanning more than 15 years, he worked under several legendary and popular art directors like Peketi Ranga Rao, Narayan Reddy, Ashok, Bhupesh R Bhupathi and Anand Sai. He turned art director with Ravi Teja starrer Sarocharu and in the recent past, he has worked on films like Venkatadri Express, Malli Malli Idhi Rani Roju and Karthikeya.
He's currently in news for his astounding work in Krish's Kanche, where he played a crucial role in recreating the 1940s look for the war drama, and also in Ohmkar's Raju Gari Gadhi. Apart from films, he also works closely with Andhra Pradesh Government to stage several high profile events. In an exclusive interview with Talking Movies with IDream, he tells us more about the making of Kanche, how he climbed the ladder and what he learnt about art direction over the years.

As creative director of advertising and graphic design at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Julia Hoffmann oversees brand identity and design for exhibition graphics, advertising, signage and collateral projects for all of MoMA's exhibitions and programs. She leads a creative team to develop design solutions that enhance MoMA's brand in New York City and around the world.
Previously, Hoffmann was interactive art director for the Colorado-based advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, where her clients included Burger King, Microsoft and Volkswagen. She started her career working for Stephen Doyle and later for Paula Scher at Pentagram in New York, designing identities, branding systems, packaging and publication design for the Public Theater, Time magazine and the Metropolitan Opera. She was the lead designer on Jon Stewart's award-winning bestseller, America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction.

Alumnus Julia Hoffmann, creative director of advertising and graphic design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, discusses her life and career. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Hoffmann earned her BFA in Graphic Design in 2002 from the School of Visual Arts, where she now teaches.
As creative director of advertising and graphic design at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Julia Hoffmann oversees brand identity and design for exhibition graphics, advertising, signage and collateral projects for all of MoMA's exhibitions and programs. She leads a creative team to develop design solutions that enhance MoMA's brand in New York City and around the world.
Previously, Hoffmann was interactive art director for the Colorado-based advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, where her clients included Burger King, Microsoft and Volkswagen. She started her career working for Stephen Doyle and later for Paula Scher at Pentagram in New York, designing identities, branding systems, packaging and publication design for the Public Theater, Time magazine and the Metropolitan Opera. She was the lead designer on Jon Stewart's award-winning bestseller, America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction.

Scott Campbell (Scott C) is a maker of paintings, illustrations, comics, kid’s books and video games. He studied illustration at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, focusing on comic and children’s book illustration. Soon after graduating, he began at Lucas Learning as concept artist on children’s video games. Four years later, he joined Double Fine productions as Art Director on such games as the critically acclaimed Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. Alongside this career in games, he has published numerous comics and created paintings that have appeared in galleries and publications around the world. Some of his most notable projects include the GREAT SHOWDOWNS series, “Igloo Head and Tree Head” series, Double Fine Action Comics, Hickee Comics, the children’s book’s "Zombie In Love" and "East Dragon", "West Dragon", and "Psychonauts" and "Brutal Legend" with Double Fine Productions. The book "Amazing Everything: The Art of Scott" collects many of his paintings over the past few years. Scott lives in New York City.
