Situated in the state of Sikkim, Tashiding Monastery is located approximately 40 km from Gyalshing and 19 km to the south east of Yoksum. Founded in 1717 by Ngadak Sempa Chembo (one of the three wise men who consecrated ceremony of the first lama), the monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa order.
Tashiding Monastery is situated in the state of Sikkim. It lies at a distance of approximately 40 km from Gyalshing and 19 km to the south east of Yoksum. Perched on top of the hill rising between the Rathong River and the Rangit River, it provides breathtaking views of the scenery below. Tashiding Gompa of India dates back to the year 1717, which coincided with reign of the third Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal. It is located on the site blessed by the great Guru Padmasambhava.

We started from Chalamthang at 10 am. It was a clear day (not much clear to view Kanchenjungha from Chalamthang). We expected some waterfalls on the way. But the route to reach Yuksom via Tashiding does not provide so. When we found that we were a bit dis-heartened.

Tashiding Monastery is a Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism in Western Sikkim, northeastern India. Tashiding
Tashiding is a small village on a hilltop at West District of Sikkim in the Eastern Himalaya of India. Tashiding means “The Devoted Central Glory”. This village is about 250 m above sea level with a sub-tropical climate. It is around 40 kilometer far away from district headquarter of Gyalshing. In electoral roll of 2011, Tashiding comes under the Assembly Constituency of Yuksom-Tashiding.
Etymology
The legends of the village says that the name Tashiding means “The Devoted Central Glory”. It represents the Nyingmapa order of Tibetan Buddhism and has been a center of worship in the Kingdom of Sikkim since the 1700s.
Population Composition
In Tashiding village, most of the village population is from Schedule Tribe (ST). Schedule Tribe (ST) constitutes 51.76 % while Schedule Caste (SC) were 13.67 % of total population in Tashiding village.

For centuries Sikkim has been a segregated and independent Buddhist kingdom on the edge of the Himalayas, a land-locked Indian state and India’s most northerly region. Historical, cultural and spiritual, Sikkim is strongly associated with Tibet and possesses more than two hundred monasteries. The most holy monastery of the Nyingmapa schools is in Tashiding and is located on a mountain in the east of the country, along the route from Darjeeling. It was built in 1717 following the sight of a rainbow that connected the site with the majestic Anchenjunga Mountain. The large complex consists of a modest main temple, several buildings, chapels and Chorten with relics of both Chogyals and Lamas. A romantic forest trail leads to the Dubdi Monastery that was built high above Yoksum in a spectacular location in 1701. Two prayer houses and three stupas are situated in the fenced garden terrain and it is one of the oldest monastery complexes that is no longer inhabited by monks. The narrow road leads to West Sikkim and travels past tea plantations on whose slopes are planted endless rows of tea bushes. The black ‘first flush’ from the Temi Tea Garden is considered to be a ‘royal’ tea with a subtle, sweet, elegant and harmonious taste. The plantation was established in 1969 and today Sikkim tea can compete with that of Darjeeling, despite their obvious differences. Tradition, spirituality, culture and handicrafts, ethnic diversity and rural life, all combined with both myth and legend. Sikkim is a rare jewel set on the edge of the Himalayas!

ABOUT TASHIDING MONASTERY:
Tashiding is the nearest town to the Tashiding Monastery (Gompa), which is the most sacred and holiest monasteries in Sikkim.
Tashiding means "The Devoted Central Glory" and the monastery by this name was founded in 1641 by Ngadak Sempa Chempo Phunshok Rigzing who belonged to the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Ngadak was one of the three wise men who held the consecration ceremony crowning the first King of Sikkim at Yuksom. It was extended and renovated in 1717 during the reign of the third Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal. 'Bhumchu Ceremony' or festival is a popular religious festival that is held on the 14th and 15th day of the first month of Tibetan Calendar.
In the 17th century, Ngadak Sempa Chemp built a small Lhakhang at this location. This was enlarged into the present monastery during the reign of Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal. Pedi Wangmo built the main monastery and installed many statues which are still seen in the monastery. Lhatsun Chenpo built the Chortens; which are considered holy. Yanchong Lodil, the Master craftsman crafted the flagstones that surround the monastery. These are carved with the holy Buddhist mantra 'Om Mane Padme Hum.
This monastery located at an altitude of 1465 m is built on top of a heart shaped hill or helmet shaped hill above the confluence of the Rathong Chu and Rangeet rivers, with the Mt. Kanchendzonga providing the scenic back drop. It is about 16 km from Yuksam, 40 km from Gezing via Legship.[1]
The monastery is considered as the spiritual centre of Sikkim since it is encircled by many important monasteries in Sikkim in all directions such as: the Dubdi Monastery 23 km away on its northern direction, the Khecheopalri Lake (wish fulfilling lake) on the northwest, the Pemayangtse monastery on the west, the Shiva temple at Legship on the south, the Mongbrue gompa and Ravangla Bön monastery on the southeast, the Ravangla Gelug monastery on the east, the Karma Kagyud Ralang Monastery on the northeast. Gulia summarising the importance of this monastery has said:
"For tashiding one can say 'seeing is believing.' The monastery is historically illustrious, geographically well located, aesthetically beautiful, spiritually divine -- a place where nature and spirituality dwell together, urging the human race to be ecologically upright."
Geographically the Monastery and the Tashiding town are surrounded by four divine caves located in four cardinal directions. The four caves where Buddhist saints meditated are: On the East is the Sharchog Bephug, on the South is the Khandozangphu, in the West is Dechenpug cave and on the North is the Lhari Nyingphug. The main deity deified in the monastery is Tashiding and hence the monastery is also known as 'Dakkar Tashiding'
