"Don't Look Back" - Chris Darby, live at Fink's Moped

Hello, friends- I want to share something special with you. I've spent the last seventy days on the road, drumming for two different bands, playing over forty shows in over twenty states, traveling thousands of miles in planes, trains, buses and a van, making music in bars, restaurants, clubs, coffee shops and moped co-ops, meeting all kinds of new people and thinking a lot about my life. You get very little alone time on the road, but there are long hours of travel where, despite how close you're sitting to the person next to you, you can be very alone with your thoughts. It's good for you. The guy who was sitting next to me for most of the last two and a half months, Chris Darby, is a singer-songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. He tagged along with Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray for our entire fifty-five day run, shooting and editing a video tour diary entry every day, and occasionally playing some of his own music before our set. Nearly every set opened with the same song—a new one. The lyrics are unapologetically optimistic, and full of some gentle advice for all of us. This video begins with some footage from his performance of "Don't Look Back" at our last show of tour, in Fink's Moped Co-op in San Diego. He played it completely without amplification. Like most nights when people were really listening, he captivated the whole room. The second portion of the video contains time-lapse footage I shot during our drive from Taos to Santa Fe last week of tour. Tinkering around with iMovie, I found it to be a great companion piece for the theme of travel woven through Chris's lyrics. What I find most striking about the video are the clouds—no matter what direction the van chooses, they hover, seemingly immovable, slowly shifting across the huge canvas of the sky and out of the frame of the camera's tiny eye. On our next-to-last night of tour, we camped at Jumbo Rocks Campground in Joshua Tree National Park. After our fire burned out, I grabbed a headlamp and made my way to the top of one of the giant rocks near our site. I laid down on my back, turned off the headlamp and let my eyes acclimate. Jumbo Rocks is deep in the heart of Joshua Tree, far from town and far from any light pollution, and I couldn't find a single cloud in the sky. I felt like I was strapped to the front of a giant spaceship. The Earth travels about 67,000mph, but the stars in the sky are unimpressed. Real perspective—no matter how fast and how far you go, you're still really very much in the same place. If so, why leave anywhere? What compels me to travel is getting to give music to more people. It's not the miles OR the hours—it's the exchange. It's how many people you reach, in the time you're given. Here are Chris's lyrics.
