Rock County is the name of three counties in the United States:

Minnesota

Minnesota (ⁱ/mɪnᵻˈsoʊtə/; locally  [ˌmɪnəˈso̞ɾə]) is a state in the Midwestern United States. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. The name comes from the Dakota word for "clear blue water". Owing to its large number of lakes, the state is informally known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Its official motto is L'Étoile du Nord (French: Star of the North). Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 21st most populous of the U.S. States; nearly 60 percent of its residents live in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area (known as the "Twin Cities"), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now partially cleared, farmed and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.

Luverne, Minnesota

Luverne is a city in Rock County, Minnesota, United States, along the Rock River. The population was 4,745 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat. It is one of four towns profiled in the 2007 Ken Burns documentary The War. It is the main setting for the second season of the TV show Fargo.

History

A post office called Luverne has been in operation since 1868. Luverne was platted in 1870, and named for Luverne Hawes, the daughter of a settler.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.69 square miles (9.56 km²); 3.68 square miles (9.53 km²) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km²) is water.

Rock County holds the distinction of being one of four counties in the state of Minnesota without a natural lake.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,745 people, 2,048 households, and 1,257 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,289.4 inhabitants per square mile (497.8/km²). There were 2,237 housing units at an average density of 607.9 per square mile (234.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.3% White, 0.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.

Rock County is a county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota, in the far southwestern corner of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,687. Its county seat is Luverne. The county was formed in 1857 and organized in 1870. Rock County was named for the rocky soil.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 483 square miles (1,250 km²), of which 482 square miles (1,250 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (0.06%) is water.

Despite Rock County not containing any natural lakes (the other three being Mower, Olmsted, and Pipestone), it does have a small lake created by a dam in Blue Mounds State Park.
