The Straits Times is an English-language daily broadsheet newspaper based in Singapore currently owned by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). It is the country's highest-selling paper, with a current Sunday Times circulation of nearly 365,800.
Originally established on 15 July 1845 as the The Straits Times and Singapore Journal of Commerce, in the early days of British colonial rule, and may be considered the successor to various other newspapers during the time such as the Singapore Chronicle. After Singapore became independent from Malaysia on 9 August 1965, the paper became more focused on the island leading to the creation of the New Straits Times for Malaysian readers.
SPH also publishes two other English-language dailies; the broadsheet The Business Times and The New Paper tabloid. The Straits Times is a member of the Asia News Network.
The Straits Times was started by an Armenian, Catchick Moses. Moses's friend, Martyrose Apcar, had intended to start a local paper, but met with financial difficulties. To fulfil his friend's dream, Moses took over and appointed Robert Carr Woods as editor. On 15 July 1845, The Straits Times was launched as an eight-page weekly, published at 7 Commercial Square using a hand-operated press. The subscription fee then was Sp.$1.75 per month. In September 1846, he sold the paper to Robert Woods because the press proved unprofitable to run.
The New Straits Times is an English-language newspaper published in Malaysia. It is Malaysia's oldest newspaper still in print (though not the first), having been founded as The Straits Times in 1845, and was reestablished as the "New Straits Times" in 1974. The paper served as Malaysia's only broadsheet format English language newspaper. However, following the example of British newspapers The Times and The Independent, a tabloid version first rolled off the presses on 1 September 2004 and since 18 April 2005, the newspaper is published only in tabloid size, ending a 160-year-old tradition of broadsheet publication. The New Straits Times currently retails at RM1.20 (~36 USD cents).
The New Straits Times is printed by the New Straits Times Press, which also produced the English language afternoon newspaper, The Malay Mail, until 1 January 2008, as well as assorted Malay language newspapers, most notably the Berita Harian. The New Straits Times is part of Media Prima group of companies.
BH (renamed on 2 July 2012; formerly known as Berita Harian) came into being on 1 July 1957 as the first mainstream newspaper in Bahasa Malaysia.
Its Sunday Edition, BH Ahad (renamed on 1 July 2012; previously known as Berita Minggu), was launched on 10 July 1960.
The newspaper was printed in broadsheet format until 5 July 2008, when the newspaper sported a newer, more compact look.
The paper underwent a huge transition on 1 July 2012 in which several changes were made including renaming the 'Ekonomi' section to 'Bisnes', the pullout ‘Ratu’ to ‘Famili’ and ‘Rona’ to ‘Kembara’. Changes were also made in layout, typography and pagination.

The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad (NSTP, MYX: 3999) is a Malaysian conglomerate of publishing companies, owned by Media Prima. The NSTP publishes several newspapers, including the New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro.
The "New Straits Times Press" (initially News Straits Times Press Sdn Bhd) was formed by the directors of the Directors of the Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad, in a desire to meet the reasonable aspirations of Malaysians to have a majority shareholding in the company which produced the largest mass-circulation organ in the territories of East and West Malaysia.
The Malaysia operations of the Straits Times, the Sunday Times, the Malay Mail, the Sunday Mail, Berita Harian and Berita Minggu were transferred to this new company. An agreement was reached in 1972 between the directors of the Straits Times group and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah for the disposal of 80 per cent of the stock of the News Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. for the Malaysian interest.

A TV Commercial I did about 2 years ago. I recall this being a particular long shoot - close to a 24-hour stretch! I'm sure I've gotten off easy though. :P This was to promote the new classifieds pullout of local English daily the New Straits Times. My 'husband' and I have just moved into our house, and we check the classfieds to decide what to furnish it with. Items literally appear and disappear according to our personal whims and fancies, and a showdown ensues. The shoot stretched til morning because of the technicalities & logistics involved in conveying the 'battle'. There was so much waiting around, but worth the commercial's quirky appeal!

New Times, New Times, New Times
Good morning, good morning, good morning
I'm the guard at one time this was rather pleasant
The poets they still had to muse over the classicism of clean shoes
But who today still knows a button stick
Well, that's the New Times, that's the New Times
That's the New Times
The girls would lie down, the girls would lie down
The girls would lie down before us
First one went dancing, first one went dancing
First one went dancing and then behind the bushes
Today you have to run through twenty places
Get drunk on saccharin and methyl
And then you still don't get them that far
Well, that's the New Times, that's the New Times
That's the New Times
Now take it easy there in the early morning
Who arrives but the brethren from the press
Now take it easy there in the early morning
Who arrives but the brethren from the press
If somewhere there lies a cadaver
Or something is foul in the state
You can be sure that a writer is not far behind
With his Excellency I only say
Hands off, hands off hands off the literature
The Laurel Wreath one gets today
Second hand so to speak from the old Empire's stories
Sold underhand at the Alexander Platz with all the wigs and costumes
Twitching from the shoulder one is informed
Well, that's the New Times, that's the New Times
That's the New Times
That's the New Times, that's the New Times
That's the New Times
