H+ vs H3O+ (Hydrogen cation vs Hydronium ion)
When we talk about acids in chemistry we’ll often see H+ and H3O+ written. In this video we’ll talk about the difference between H+ and H3O+ .
First off, we call H+ the Hydrogen cation. Or positive hydrogen ion. It’s sometimes called a proton as well. That because we if we have just a H atom and it loses its electron, only the nucleus is left. And that consists of a proton.
H3O+ is called the hydronium ion We get the Hydronium ion when H+ is with water.
H+ + H2O = H3O+ .
The H+ can come from things like HCl or H2SO4. These are acids.
Almost all of the time we’ll be working with H+ in water. So it will really be H3O+. Because of this the are used interchangeably. If you say H+ in an aqueous solution, it’s understood that is H3O+.

For the H3O+ structure use the periodic table to find the total number of valence electrons for the H3O+ molecule. Once we know how many valence electrons there are in H3O+ we can distribute them around the central atom with the goal of filling the outer shells of each atom.
