A major rescue operation was mounted to evacuate as many people from the flooded areas as possible, with around 10,000 people evacuated from Canvey Island alone.
Canvey was one of the communities in Essex that suffered the most significant loss of life, with 58 deaths. In Jaywick, 35 people died, and there were 120 total deaths recorded in Essex.

Affecting large parts of Europe - changing it forever, 70 years on, what happened in Canvey Island and beyond is looked at.

The 1953 North Sea flood was a major flood caused by a heavy storm surge that struck the Netherlands, north-west Belgium, England and Scotland. Most sea defences facing the surge were overwhelmed, resulting in extensive flooding.
The storm and flooding occurred at the end of Saturday, 31 January 1953 and in the morning of the next day. A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm caused a storm tide of the North Sea. The combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure caused the sea to flood land up to 5.6 metres (18 ft 4 in) above mean sea level.

The North Sea Flood of 1953
Watch on Channel 5 - Tuesday 18th of July 2023 at 9pm
On the 31st of January, 1953, the worst natural disaster to strike Britain in modern times overwhelmed the country from the Shetlands to the Thames estuary. Across a day of destruction, a massive storm and its huge tidal
surge flooded 250 square miles of land; killing hundreds of people, sinking several ships and destroying tens of thousands of homes,.
Today, few remember this disaster that shocked the country just as it was emerging from the trauma of World War II, but for some, it is still a vivid and disturbing memory. In this programme, eyewitnesses will give first hand testimony of this tragedy that gripped the nation.
The disaster started in southwestern Scotland on the morning of the 31st January. As the storm gathered strengt...

A Surge of Memories: Stories of the Great Flood 1953 and the East Coast Tidal Surge 2013.
2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the Great Flood 1953 and the 10th anniversary of the East Coast Tidal Surge 2013.
307 people died in England during the Great Flood 1953, the majority of those in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. Many hundreds more died at sea and across in the Netherlands.
It was one of the worst peacetime disasters of the 20th Century and prompted widespread reform in approaches to coastal management.
In 2013, the tide was higher in many places but no lives were lost. Forecasting, warning systems and sea defences protected most, however over 1,500 properties were still damaged or destroyed.
We also take a look at the future. Climate change and sea level rise are causing challenges already, and will only get worse. New approaches are required and Karen Thomas, Head of Par...

As the storm gathered strength in the Irish sea, the Princess Charlotte car ferry from Stranraer to Larne, is lost with over 140 souls in truly brutal conditions. The loss is still the worst post war shipping disaster in British waters to this day.

New approaches are required and Karen Thomas, Head of Partnership with Coastal Partnership East, and Richard Powell OBE, Chair of Anglian (Eastern) Regional Flood & Coastal Committee, discuss that future.
An extended version of this film is available for download by community groups and schools, with restrictions on usage. To enquire about obtaining a copy, please email coastalmanagement@eastsuffolk.gov.uk.
Archive photos remain the property of the copyright owners.
This film features King's Lynn, Snettisham, Wells, Cley, Sea Palling, Salthouse, Sheringham, Cromer, Walcott, Lowestoft, Southwold, Snape and Felixstowe. There we multiple other towns, villages and settlements that were severely affected by 1953, 2013 or both.
Thanks to Kevin Burch, former BBC Journalist, for introducing and participating in our film.
