John Fortune (born John C. Wood; 30 June 1939 – 31 December 2013) was an English satirist, comedian, writer, and actor, best known for his work with John Bird and Rory Bremner on the TV series Bremner, Bird and Fortune. He was educated at Bristol Cathedral School and King's College, Cambridge, where he was to meet and form a lasting friendship with John Bird.
Fortune was born John Wood in Bristol in 1939. His early career included contributions to Peter Cook's Establishment Club team in 1962, and as a regular member of the cast of the BBC-TV satire show Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life, both alongside Eleanor Bron and John Bird. Fortune and Bird also worked together on the TV show A Series of Birds in 1967, and Fortune and Bron wrote and performed a series of sketches for TV in Where Was Spring? in 1969. In 1971, with John Wells, he published the comic novel A Melon for Ecstasy, about a man who consummates his love affair with a tree. He appeared with Peter Sellers in a Barclays Bank television commercial in 1980, shortly before Sellers's death.

John Bird and John Fortune (the Long Johns) brilliantly, and accurately, describing the mindset of the investment banking community in this satirical interview.

From the 1981 Amnesty concert 'The Secret Policeman's Other Ball'. In his published diary entry for 8th August 2000, Bennett describes this performance as "my last fling with satire". "The audience, which had come expecting to chant the Python parrot sketch, didn't like all this talk of sex one bit (didn't like anything, I suspect, that they hadn't heard fourteen times before) and we came off to virtual silence, the other performers, as is usual on such occasions, gathered in the wings to watch, now drawing back from us in a very New York fashion, lest out lack of success be somehow infectious." From 'Untold Stories', first published 2005.

Comedy. John Fortune interviews a British army general about preparations for the war in Iraq.
John Bird and John Fortune at their very best as the "Long Johns"; John Fortune is George Parr of the Genghis Khan Foundation, "the independent thinktank", talking about drugs policy. This is from 1996, I believe. Sorry about the quality, it came via a long play VHS and a TV capture card some time ago.
This time George Parr is a British businessman living in China.
A final classic John Bird and John Fortune "Long Johns", John Bird is George Parr, a merchant banker in the city, "from a long line of bankers". This is from 1997, sorry about the VHS-induced quality!
Broadcast in 2003, shortly before the invasion, Rory Bremner, John Bird and John Fortune with a wry take on the situation. Apologies for the low quality video. All content © Vera Television/Channel 4

From Channel 4 show Bremner Bird and Fortune.....
John Bird & John Fortune have been poking fun at, well, anybody who needed fun poking at them, for decades- as part of the duo known as The Long Johns or as part of the trio Bremner, Bird & Fortune. Bird & Fortunes staged interviews of various Ministers, Bankers, Military commanders, and other gents named George Parr , are staggeringly incisive and quick-witted, and these recordings made & broadcast in 1995 show that while the individuals being mocked may have changed, the mentality of those in power hasnt.
