Before you jet off to your dream vacation in the tropics this summer, be wary of malaria--for it kills over a million people every year.
What is it?
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by a parasite called Plasmodium. Its symptoms typically include fever, headache, and vomiting and can progress to coma or death.
Where is it located?
As you can see here, malaria is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas near the equator, such as South America, Africa, and many parts of Asia.
How will it kill you?
Malaria is transmitted by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which introduces the Plasmodium parasite into your circulatory system. From there, the parasite travels to you liver to mature and reproduce. It then becomes a life-threatening illness by disrupting your body's blood supply to its vital organs.
How to survive:
If you think you've been infected, go get a blood test done immediately, as results can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several days to complete. Symptoms usually show up 8-25 hours after you've been bit by an infected mosquito. If you've tested positive, your doctor will be able to prescribe you the proper medications based on your age, the type of parasite you have, and the severity of your symptoms. But keep in mind that some strains of malaria have become resistant to drugs, in which case the use of costly medications, called artemisinins, must be implemented. And yet there are still strains of malaria found in SE Asia that are resistant even to these. Severe cases will require hospitalization in a critical care unit, where doctors will be able to manage your high fevers and seizures as well as monitor for poor breathing, low blood sugar, and low blood potassium.
So can you guess how many people were infected with malaria in 2012?
According to the World Health Organization, about 207 million people were diagnosed with malaria in 2012.

Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease of humans and other animals caused by parasitic protozoans (a group of single-celled microorganisms) belonging to the Plasmodium type. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, fatigue, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases it can cause yellow skin, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In those who have recently survived an infection, reinfection usually causes milder symptoms. This partial resistance disappears over months to years if the person has no continuing exposure to malaria.
The disease is most commonly transmitted by an infected female Anopheles mosquito. The mosquito bite introduces the parasites from the mosquito's saliva into a person's blood. The parasites travel to the liver where they mature and reproduce. Five species of Plasmodium can infect and be spread by humans. Most deaths are caused by P. falciparum because P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae generally cause a milder form of malaria. The species P. knowlesi rarely causes disease in humans. Malaria is typically diagnosed by the microscopic examination of blood using blood films, or with antigen-based rapid diagnostic tests. Methods that use the polymerase chain reaction to detect the parasite's DNA have been developed, but are not widely used in areas where malaria is common due to their cost and complexity.

Malaria is a disease whose deadly symptoms occur during its quick life cycle. Many documentaries about it have been made in Africa due to the widespread need for treatment.

Before you jet off to your dream vacation in the tropics this summer, be wary of malaria--for it kills over a million people every year.
What is it?
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by a parasite called Plasmodium. Its symptoms typically include fever, headache, and vomiting and can progress to coma or death.
Where is it located?
As you can see here, malaria is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas near the equator, such as South America, Africa, and many parts of Asia.
How will it kill you?
Malaria is transmitted by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which introduces the Plasmodium parasite into your circulatory system. From there, the parasite travels to you liver to mature and reproduce. It then becomes a life-threatening illness by disrupting your body's blood supply to its vital organs.
How to survive:
If you think you've been infected, go get a blood test done immediately, as results can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several days to complete. Symptoms usually show up 8-25 hours after you've been bit by an infected mosquito. If you've tested positive, your doctor will be able to prescribe you the proper medications based on your age, the type of parasite you have, and the severity of your symptoms. But keep in mind that some strains of malaria have become resistant to drugs, in which case the use of costly medications, called artemisinins, must be implemented. And yet there are still strains of malaria found in SE Asia that are resistant even to these. Severe cases will require hospitalization in a critical care unit, where doctors will be able to manage your high fevers and seizures as well as monitor for poor breathing, low blood sugar, and low blood potassium.
So can you guess how many people were infected with malaria in 2012?
According to the World Health Organization, about 207 million people were diagnosed with malaria in 2012.

Malaria is a disease whose deadly symptoms occur during its quick life cycle. Many documentaries about it have been made in Africa due to the widespread need for treatment.

Before you jet off to your dream vacation in the tropics this summer, be wary of malaria--for it kills over a million people every year.
What is it?
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by a parasite called Plasmodium. Its symptoms typically include fever, headache, and vomiting and can progress to coma or death.
Where is it located?
As you can see here, malaria is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas near the equator, such as South America, Africa, and many parts of Asia.
How will it kill you?
Malaria is transmitted by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which introduces the Plasmodium parasite into your circulatory system. From there, the parasite travels to you liver to mature and reproduce. It then becomes a life-threatening illness by disrupting your body's blood supply to its vital organs.
How to survive:
If you think you've been infected, go get a blood test done immediately, as results can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several days to complete. Symptoms usually show up 8-25 hours after you've been bit by an infected mosquito. If you've tested positive, your doctor will be able to prescribe you the proper medications based on your age, the type of parasite you have, and the severity of your symptoms. But keep in mind that some strains of malaria have become resistant to drugs, in which case the use of costly medications, called artemisinins, must be implemented. And yet there are still strains of malaria found in SE Asia that are resistant even to these. Severe cases will require hospitalization in a critical care unit, where doctors will be able to manage your high fevers and seizures as well as monitor for poor breathing, low blood sugar, and low blood potassium.
