A television network is a telecommunications network for distribution of television program content, whereby a central operation provides programming to many television stations or pay television providers. Until the mid-1980s, television programming in most countries of the world was dominated by a small number of broadcast networks. Many early television networks (such as the BBC, NBC or CBC) evolved from earlier radio networks.
In countries where most networks broadcast identical, centrally originated content to all of their stations and where most individual television transmitters therefore operate only as large "repeater stations", the terms "television network", "television channel" (a numeric identifier or radio frequency) and "television station" have become mostly interchangeable in everyday language, with professionals in television-related occupations continuing to make a differentiation between them. Within the industry, a tiering is sometimes created among groups of networks based on whether their programming is simultaneously originated from a central point, and whether the network master control has the technical and administrative capability to take over the programming of their affiliates in real-time when it deems this necessary – the most common example being during national breaking news events.
Daystar (formerly known as the Daystar Television Network) is an American evangelical Christian-based religious broadcast television network that is owned by Word of God Fellowship. Its founders are Marcus Lamb and his wife, Joni Lamb. The network is headquartered near the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in Bedford, Texas.
Daystar's roots can be traced back to 1993, when Marcus Lamb and his Word of God Fellowship ministry purchased KMPX (channel 29), a formerly defunct UHF station in Dallas, Texas, broadcasting Christian programming. Lamb is a Georgia native who first began preaching at age 15 and finished Magna Cum Laude from Lee College (now Lee University) at age 19. In 1982, he married Joni Trammel, and together they began to travel the United States, preaching in churches, conventions, and crusades.
In 1984, the two moved to Montgomery, Alabama to launch a television station. In less than a year, WMCF-TV (channel 45) became the first full-power Christian television station in the state. The Lambs built the station for the next five years, and in 1990 sold it to the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). They moved to Dallas, Texas, where, in 1993, the Lambs launched their first station in the Dallas market. They ran channel 29 for three years. Then, in 1996, with a large contribution from Kenneth Copeland Ministries, the Lambs purchased a station in Colorado, officially turning their television ministry into a network. In August 1997, the small staff moved into a 32,000-square-foot (3,000 m2) facility that included production studios; Daystar was officially launched on December 31, 1997.
Station identification (ident, network ID or channel ID) is the practice of radio or television stations or networks identifying themselves on-air, typically by means of a call sign or brand name (sometimes known, particularly in the United States, as a "sounder" or "stinger", more generally as a station or network ID). This may be to satisfy requirements of licensing authorities, a form of branding or a combination of both. As such, it is closely related to production logos used in television and cinema, alike.
Station identification used to be done regularly by an announcer at the halfway point during the presentation of a television program, or in between programs.
Idents are known as a montage in Thailand, and as an interlude in Cambodia and Vietnam.
Station IDs in the Philippines differ from the original concept. Instead of a way to identify television networks, these are presented in the form of music videos that represent the season in which the ident is aired during, which consist of tag-init (summer season), tag-ulan (rainy season), and Pasko (Christmas season). Station IDs in the Philippines runs for three to six minutes depending on the television station. The longest station ID is "Thank You Ang Babait Ninyo", which was used by ABS-CBN as a Christmas ID in 2014, lasting for ten minutes and 36 seconds. However, ABS-CBN, alongside some networks (i.e. UNTV, RPN, IBC, and PTV), also releases CGI-animated station IDs, not yearly but sporadically.
