A maritime museum (sometimes nautical museum) is a museum specializing in the display of objects relating to ships and travel on large bodies of water. A subcategory of maritime museums are naval museums, which focus on navies and the military use of the sea.
The great prize of a maritime museum is a historic ship (or a replica) made accessible as a museum ship, but as these are large and require a considerable budget to maintain, many museums preserve smaller or more fragile ships or partial ships within the museum buildings. Most museums exhibit interesting pieces of ships (such as a figurehead or cannon), ship models, and miscellaneous small items associated with ships and shipping, like cutlery, uniforms, and so forth.
Ship modellers often have a close association with maritime museums; not only does the museum have items that help the modeller achieve better accuracy, but the museum provides a display space for models larger than will comfortably fit in a modeller's home; and of course the museum is happy to take a ship model as a donation. Museums will also commission models.
The Norwegian Maritime Museum (Norwegian: Norsk Maritimt Museum), previously known as the Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum, founded in 1914, is located at Bygdøynesveien on the Bygdøy peninsula, on the western side of Oslo, Norway.
The museum's building won an architectural award. Its exhibits on coast culture and maritime history include boat models, fishing, marine archeology, marine paintings, ship building, and shipping. The video "Maritime Norway" by Ivo Caprino and a library are also a part of the museum experience.
The Norwegian Maritime Museum is situated near several other museums, including the Fram Museum; the Kon-Tiki Museum; the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History; and the Viking Ship Museum.
The Arctic ship Gjøa and the Stavanger are on display. Gjøa was the first vessel to transit the Northwest Passage in a 1903-06 expedition of Roald Amundsen. The Stavanger was designed by Colin Archer for the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue, and the three-masted schooner Svanen ("Swan"). Other boats are exhibited in the harbour.

Anders Beer Wilse (12 June 1865 – 21 February 1949) was a Norwegian photographer whose photography visually documented Norway in the early to mid-20th century. Restoration of a wooden ship recognized as historical maritime treasure by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. It might seem just a video about the restoration of a wooden ship, but the actual subject of this documentary-film is the ecstatic state of mind of its shipwright: an Italian researcher in maritime ethnography who decided to learn boat building skills in order to understand the intangible knowledge hidden behind the construction of a wooden ship. This film is an experiment in Sensory Ethnography: a combination of aesthetics and ethnography which attempts to bring out an inner dimension that may only with difficulty, if it all, be rendered with propositional prose. I’m an Italian boatbuilder, filmmaker and independent researcher in cultural anthropology. My major ...
