Cheerful is the uttering or making of sounds encouraging, stimulating or exciting to action, indicating approval or acclaiming or welcoming persons, announcements of events and the like.
The word cheer meant originally face, countenance, expression, and came through Old French into Middle English in the 13th century from Low Latin cara, head; this is generally referred to the Greek καρα;. Cara is used by the 6th-century poet Flavius Cresconius Corippus, Postquam venere verendam Caesilris ante caram (In Laud em Justini Minoris). Cheer was at first qualified with epithets, both of joy and gladness and of sorrow; compare She thanked Dyomede for ale ... his gode chere (Chaucer, Troylus) with If they sing ... tis with so dull a cheere (Shakespeare, Sonnets, xcvii.). An early transference in meaning was to hospitality or entertainment, and hence to food and drink, good cheer. The sense of a shout of encouragement or applause is a late use. Defoe (Captain Singleton) speaks of it as a sailor's word, and the meaning does not appear in Johnson.

Americana favorite Hurray for the Riff Raff is the creation of frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra, a 26-year-old Bronx native who left home at an early age to travel the country before settling in New Orleans to play with a revolving cast of musicians. The band performed in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse on April 3, 2014, as part of Lincoln Center's American Songbook.

I mastered a disguise that I take with me
I smile and nod and pretend
I know how to dress, cut my hair
I know how to act like I don't care
You won't believe that I've recovered quite so quickly
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Tellin' you it's almost true
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Somone else would almost do
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Someone that is almost you
Hurray (ah ah ah), I say (ah ah ah), hurray
I'm not afraid to say the things that I am thinking
Cause I'm not dreamin' of you
I know what it takes to walk that walk
Set my heartbeat to the clock
It's 4am and I haven't started sleepin'
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Tellin' you it's almost true
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Someone else would almost do
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Someone that is almost you
Hurray (ah ah ah), I say (ah ah ah), hurray (ah ah)
Same, I will find her, someone just the same
I will find her, just the same but worse in every way
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Tellin' you it's almost true
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Someone else would almost do
Ah ah ah, ah ah ah
Someone that is almost you
