Mesopotamia. Land of two rivers, the Euphrates and the Tigris. Descendants of the ancient cultures are Siriacs, Arameic-speaking Christians.
Nowadays the Syriacs inhabit the "Upper Mesopotamia," which includes Northern Iraq, Turkey, and Syria -- as well as Lebanon and Iran.
At the end of the First World War, after the downfall of the Ottoman empire, their life experienced major change. The newly defined borders divided their population into different states. Everywhere they represent a national and religious minority. Over the past 100 years they have been persecuted and their rights violated. Therefore, great numbers of them continue to emigrate to Europe and North America.
Syriacs speak Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus himself. That is why they became acquainted with his teachings very early and adopted Christianity. Since they lived in the East, outside the borders of the Roman Empire, they were called the Eastern Christians.

They have fought to defend themselves from the Islamic State, Al-Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham and frequently work in tandem with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).
As sectarian violence swamps Syria, MFS aim to defend their land, religion and identity in a region where Christians are increasingly finding themselves unwelcome.

Syriac christian orthodox sacred chant performed by the Choir of Nouri Iskander from Aleppo (extract from the french documentary "Le Silence des anges - Terres et voix de l'Orient orthodoxe", by Olivier Mille et Jean-François Colosimo, France - Belgique, 1999)
"Nouri Iskandar was born in Aleppo in 1938. He studied at the higher institute of music at the University of Cairo and was graduated with B. A. degree in music.
He worked with composing Syriac folk music since the early sixties where he composed the most famous Syriac folk songs like "O habibo habibo", "Zliqe frsi", "Lo tehfokh" and others.
In 1973 Nouri Iskandar presented the first professional Syriac musical festival at the Auditorium of the UNESCO Palace in Beirut, when he presented the Syriac folk music in a very modern and cultural manner.
Nouri Iskandar composed large number of Syriac folk songs. His most famous work is Parqana (Salvation) a Syriac operate, Solo violin with string quintet and Solo oud with string trio beside tens of film music.
Of his famous works, the Castle of Aleppo´s concert in 1997, he represented the Syrian Arab folklore songs proving that their original source is the Syriac church hymns.
With respect to church music he notated Beth Gazo (The Treasury of Chants) of the Syriac church, according to the Edessian school of rhythms. This work is unique in the documentation of church music. Beside this Nouri Iskandar made tens of professional concerts both in Syria and in Europe.
Nouri Iskandar is currently the director of the Conservatory of Music in Aleppo, the city of his permanent residency".

"Nouri Iskandar was born in Aleppo in 1938. He studied at the higher institute of music at the University of Cairo and was graduated with B. A. degree in music.
He worked with composing Syriac folk music since the early sixties where he composed the most famous Syriac folk songs like "O habibo habibo", "Zliqe frsi", "Lo tehfokh" and others.
In 1973 Nouri Iskandar presented the first professional Syriac musical festival at the Auditorium of the UNESCO Palace in Beirut, when he presented the Syriac folk music in a very modern and cultural manner.
Nouri Iskandar composed large number of Syriac folk songs. His most famous work is Parqana (Salvation) a Syriac operate, Solo violin with string quintet and Solo oud with string trio beside tens of film music.
Of his famous works, the Castle of Aleppo´s concert in 1997, he represented the Syrian Arab folklore songs proving that their original source is the Syriac church hymns.
With respect to church music he notated Beth Gazo (The Treasury of Chants) of the Syriac church, according to the Edessian school of rhythms. This work is unique in the documentation of church music. Beside this Nouri Iskandar made tens of professional concerts both in Syria and in Europe.
Nouri Iskandar is currently the director of the Conservatory of Music in Aleppo, the city of his permanent residency".

These Mysteries, once in the Divinity's bosom, are being distributed among Adam's sons on this alter.
The alter is fashioned like the chariot of the cherubim. And is surrounded by multitudes of the heavenly hosts.
On this alter is laid the Body of God's Son and Adam's children in their hands administer It.
Instead of a man clad in silk, stands the (priest), and distributes alms among the needy.
If envy existed among the angels the cherubim would envy human beings.
Where Zion set up the Cross to crucify the Son, there grew up the tree which gave birth to the Lamb.

The woman who was kissed by an ecstatic sailor in Times Square celebrating the end of World War II has died at the age of 92. Greta Zimmer Friedman's son says his mother died Thursday at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She died from complications of old age, he said. Nasa has sent a spacecraft chasing after an unexplored asteroid, in the hope that it might one day keep us from being destroyed. The Osiris-Rex robotic hunter has blasted off to the asteroid Bennu. When it gets there it will scoop up bits of ancient space rock - which could eventually tell us not just about where we came from but whether there is life elsewhere as well ...
