Aldaniti (1970 - 28 March 1997), (Chestnut - Gelding), was a racehorse who won the Grand National on 4 April 1981. Jockey Bob Champion recovered from cancer while Aldaniti recovered after suffering a career threatening injury. The horse was trained by Josh Gifford.
His name was derived from the names of his breeder Tommy Barron's four grandchildren: Alastair, David, Nicola, Timothy. He starred as himself in the 1983 film Champions alongside John Hurt and was voted 62nd in the 100 greatest sporting moments in a Channel 4 poll.
He also ran in the 1982 Grand National with Bob Champion, but fell at the first fence.
Aldaniti died of old age in 1997.
A British Rail Class 86 electric locomotive is named after him.
The Grand National is a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. First run in 1839, it is a handicap steeplechase over 4 miles 3 1⁄2 furlongs (7.141 km) with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps. It is the most valuable jump race in Europe, with a prize fund of £1 million in 2015.
The course over which the race is run features much larger fences than those found on conventional National Hunt tracks. Many of these, particularly Becher's Brook, The Chair and the Canal Turn, have become famous in their own right and, combined with the distance of the event, create what has been called "the ultimate test of horse and rider".
The Grand National has been broadcast live on free-to-air terrestrial television in the United Kingdom since 1960. From then until 2012 it was broadcast by the BBC. Since 2013, it has been shown by Channel 4, which holds the UK broadcasting rights until 2016. An estimated 500 to 600 million people watch the Grand National in over 140 countries. It has also been broadcast on radio since 1927; BBC Radio held the exclusive radio rights until 2013, however, Talksport also now holds radio commentary rights. The race is popular amongst many people who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year.
Robert "Bob" Champion MBE (born 4 June 1948) is a English former jump jockey who won the 1981 Grand National on Aldaniti. His triumph was made into a film Champions, with John Hurt portraying Champion. The film is based on Champion's book Champions Story, which he wrote with close friend and racing journalist and broadcaster Jonathan Powell.
Champion was born in Guisborough, Redcar and Cleveland, England. At the height of his career as a jockey, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July 1979. He was treated with an orchidectomy and with the chemotherapeutic drugs bleomycin, vinblastine and cisplatin, and also had an exploratory operation to identify cancer in his lymph nodes. His victory on Aldaniti was viewed by many as a great triumph, following his previous adversity. Their victory earned them that year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Team Award and was chosen as one of the 100 Greatest Sporting Moments by Channel 4 viewers in 2002.
Other major races that Champion won during his career include the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and the Whitbread Trial Chase. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1982 Queen's Birthday Honours. In 1983 he formed the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, which has raised millions of pounds for cancer research. He retired from training horses in 1999.
It’s Aldaniti in the lead but being pressed now by Spartan Missile. It’s Aldaniti from Spartan Missile and here comes John Thorne, 54 year old John Thorne putting in a storming finish. It’s Aldaniti from Spartan Missile. Aldaniti is gonna win it, at the line, Aldaniti wins the National!
The 1981 Grand National was the 135th renewal of the Grand National horse race that took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England, on 4 April 1981.
It is remembered for the winning horse Aldaniti, who had recovered from chronic leg problems, and his jockey Bob Champion, who had recovered from cancer. Aldaniti's injuries dated back to 1976, while Champion had been diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1979. However, Aldaniti was nursed back to optimum form ahead of the race, and Champion overcame lengthy hospitalisation and chemotherapy to win the National by a distance of four lengths. In second place was the 8/1 favourite, Spartan Missile, ridden by 54-year-old amateur jockey and grandfather John Thorne.

Number 61 from the channel 4 show 100 Greatest Sporting Moments,English jump jockey Bob Champion made headlines in 1981 when he recovered from testicular cancer to reach the pinnacle of his sport. Champion had been diagnosed with the disease in 1979 but he bounced back two years later when he rode Aldaniti - who had also recovered from a career-threatening injury - to Grand National success. This is a tribute to one of the best race horses i have heard of his name Aldaniti
Wouldn't it be nice to be a heroine?
Cool and slinky with an appropriate smile
Honey, I take sugar, two
While he's ranting and raving
Could you pass that cream?
I was looking to have a cupa tea
Instead I freeze
Seeing his next move, is it grabbing my hair?
Or bushing my tush
Till there's no scream left?
Wouldn't it be nice to be a heroine?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit?
Wouldn't it be nice to be a hero?
Standing fast and easy with an appropriate grin
Brother, not that way, they'll take you away
Mmm, give me your gun
It's no use to anyone
Instead I freeze
Seeing if I shut up and stay real still
Maybe he wont kill
At least not me
Wouldn't it be nice to be a hero?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit?
Wouldn't it be nice to be a star?
Shinin' and sparklin', looking down the whole and plenty
Being looked up with a telescope
While my sisters busy cutting the rope
Daddy, you can't touch me
Mommy, you can't hate me
I'm a star, get it?
Instead I froze
And I let them, I let them
I let them pick my brain
Twist my arm, cut my throat
And wish me dead
But I'm still thinking
Wouldn't it be nice to be a star?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
Wouldnit, wouldnit?
