Huddie William Ledbetter (January 20, 1888 – December 6, 1949) was an American folk and blues musician notable for his strong vocals, virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the songbook of folk standards he introduced. He is best known as Lead Belly. Though many releases list him as "Leadbelly", he himself wrote it as "Lead Belly", which is also the spelling on his tombstone and the spelling used by the Lead Belly Foundation.
Lead Belly usually played a twelve-string guitar, but he also played the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and "windjammer" (diatonic accordion). In some of his recordings he sings while clapping his hands or stomping his foot.
Lead Belly's songs covered a wide range, including gospel music; blues about women, liquor, prison life, and racism; and folk songs about cowboys, prison, work, sailors, cattle herding, and dancing. He also wrote songs about people in the news, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Jean Harlow, the Scottsboro Boys, and Howard Hughes.
I used my forensic software to split the guitar from vocals in this classic recording. I then eq'd it and remixed the stems. Probably one of the oldest songs in stereo. Original, mono version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRtd9TFfScU

This is the song that Mark Lanegan and Nirvana covered. It is not a Nirvana song, or a Mark Lanegan song. It is a traditional song that Leadbelly was the first to record it. Lanegan and Cobain heard it and loved it.
A folklorist, John Lomax and his son Alan Lomax, with funding from the Library of Congress recorded Huddie William Ledbetter, commonly known as Lead Belly or Leadbelly. They first meet him while he was imprisoned. They were deeply impressed by his vibrant tenor voice and huge repertoire, they recorded him on portable aluminum disc recording equipment for the Library of Congress. They returned to record with new and better equipment in July of the following year (1934), all in all recording hundreds of his songs. On August 1, Lead Belly was released (again having served almost all of his minimum sentence), this time after the Lomaxes had taken a petition to Louisiana Governor Oscar K. Allen at Ledbetter's urgent request. The petition was on the other side of a recording of his signature s...

Alternately title, Black History- Songs of the Past...Exist in the Present. The word of the day is Insanely...how many times did we say it? HAHA! So this month along with being full of love it's also Black History Month. And in a way, I wanted to use that and roll with it. And while I don't have the records. I thought this was just too far cool a story not to share within the vinyl community. Plus I imagine a lot of people today don't realize music...it's not new. A great deal of it actually comes from songs of the past picked up over time and altered. So, What does American Blues Musician Lead Belly and Nirvana have in common? They sang the same song. How did they do that? You ask. Well with a song called, "In the Pine, Black Girl or Where Did you Sleep Last Night?" Enjoy your lesson i...

Lead Belly wrote this song in June 1937 in response to the discrimination and segregation that he and his wife faced during a visit to Washington DC to record for Alan Lomax. It was recorded in December 1938 for the Library of Congress and again the following year for commercial release. It has been covered by several artists including Pete Seeger, Ry Cooder and Billy Bragg. This song is regarded as one of Lead Belly's best original works, but there is some doubt over the song's authorship, with some scholars arguing that Lead Belly could not have written a work in such an unfamiliar genre without a collaborator. He did not have a history of protest music before he was discovered by Lomax. Since Lomax's recordings were sold to northerners sympathetic to Civil Rights, it has been suggested ...
