This is the final part in the 3 part series "Putty - The Final Guide".
On this iteration you will learn how to upload and download files using only Putty. This can be useful for two reasons:
1. You will be able to connect to your server in a much more secure way. When you do an FTP connection, your user name and password are sent to the server on the clear!! A hacker could capture this information and, as a result, be able to hack into your website. When you upload and download files with Putty you do so in an encrypted and secure connection.
2. Uploading a large number of files via FTP can be painfully slow. This is inherent to the way the FTP protocol works. Each file that is uploaded is a unique FTP transaction. There is a conversation between the server and your computer for each file! The process is very different when you are uploading a large number of files with Putty, Putty will compress the files being uploaded into a single file. As a result, only one transaction is taking place. Once the files are there, they are automatically decompressed. In my personal experience I have had uploads that took 40 minutes with FTP and less than 4 minutes with Putty.

I am recording the sound of my speaking voice as well as the image of myself, and I am going to upload it to YouTube, rip it from YouTube, and upload it again and again, until the original characteristics of both my voice and my image are destroyed. What you will see and hear, then, are the artifacts inherent in the video codec of both YouTube and the mp4 format I convert it to on my computer. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a digital fact, but more as a way to eliminate all human qualities my speech and image might have.

1. You will be able to connect to your server in a much more secure way. When you do an FTP connection, your user name and password are sent to the server on the clear!! A hacker could capture this information and, as a result, be able to hack into your website. When you upload and download files with Putty you do so in an encrypted and secure connection.
2. Uploading a large number of files via FTP can be painfully slow. This is inherent to the way the FTP protocol works. Each file that is uploaded is a unique FTP transaction. There is a conversation between the server and your computer for each file! The process is very different when you are uploading a large number of files with Putty, Putty will compress the files being uploaded into a single file. As a result, only one transaction is taking place. Once the files are there, they are automatically decompressed. In my personal experience I have had uploads that took 40 minutes with FTP and less than 4 minutes with Putty.

An homage to the great Alvin Lucier, this piece explores the 'photocopy effect', where upon repeated copies the object begin to accumulate the idiosyncrasies of the medium doing the copying.
Full words: I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice as well as the image of myself, and I am going to upload it to YouTube, rip it from YouTube, and upload it again and again, until the original characteristics of both my voice and my image are destroyed. What you will see and hear, then, are the artifacts inherent in the video codec of both YouTube and the mp4 format I convert it to on my computer. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a digital fact, but more as a way to eliminate all human qualities my speech and image might have.
