The Best of Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (18 March [O.S. 6 March] 1844 -- 21 June [O.S. 8 June] 1908) Rimsky-Korsakov believed, as did fellow composer Mily Balakirev and critic Vladimir Stasov, in developing a nationalistic style of classical music. This style employed Russian folk song and lore along with exotic harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism, and eschewed traditional Western compositional methods. Rimsky-Korsakov believed, as did fellow composer Mily Balakirev and critic Vladimir Stasov, in developing a nationalistic style of classical music. This style employed Russian folk song and lore along with exotic harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism, and eschewed traditional Western compositional methods. However, Rimsky-Korsakov appreciated Western musical techniques after he became a professor of musical composition, harmony and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871. He undertook a rigorous three-year program of self-education and became a master of Western methods, incorporating them alongside the influences of Mikhail Glinka and fellow members of The Five. His techniques of composition and orchestration were further enriched by his exposure to the works of Richard Wagner.
For much of his life, Rimsky-Korsakov combined his composition and teaching with a career in the Russian military—at first as an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy, then as the civilian Inspector of Naval Bands. He wrote that he developed a passion for the ocean in childhood from reading books and hearing of his older brother's exploits in the navy. This love of the sea might have influenced him to write two of his best-known orchestral works, the musical tableau Sadko (not his later opera of the same name) and Scheherazade. Through his service as Inspector of Naval Bands, Rimsky-Korsakov expanded his knowledge of woodwind and brass playing, which enhanced his abilities in orchestration. He passed this knowledge to his students, and also posthumously through a textbook on orchestration that was completed by his son-in-law, Maximilian Steinberg.
Rimsky-Korsakov left a considerable body of original Russian nationalist compositions. He prepared works by The Five for performance, which brought them into the active classical repertoire (although there is controversy over his editing of the works of Modest Mussorgsky), and shaped a generation of younger composers and musicians during his decades as an educator. Rimsky-Korsakov is therefore considered "the main architect" of what the classical music public considers the Russian style of composition. His influence on younger composers was especially important, as he served as a transitional figure between the autodidactism which exemplified Glinka and The Five and professionally trained composers which would become the norm in Russia by the closing years of the 19th century. While Rimsky-Korsakov's style was based on those of Glinka, Balakirev, Hector Berlioz, and Franz Liszt, he "transmitted this style directly to two generations of Russian composers" and influenced non-Russian composers including Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Paul Dukas and Ottorino Respi

"Because everyone in the film grew up, I thought maybe the music should," John Powell said of his experience during his creation of the score of "How to Train Your Dragon 2." "Films are like icebergs, you have them at a certain point where they all look like they're all in a row but then they all start to move and they start to flow," Danny Elfman, composer of "Big Eyes" shares about his experience creating the score for the motion picture. "There wasn't a lot of room for misdirection and it just added a level of tension that I can hear in the music, which may be a good thing," Trent Reznor, the "Gone Girl" composer, dishes about the music that surrounded the Oscar-nominated drama. "This project was sort of so delicious, it was so nice," said "Interstellar" composer Hans Zimmer about his time on set of the sci-fi flick. "I could just go and express my ideas and whatever I wanted to try out, we could try out." "For me the whole thing is trying to distill the essence of the picture to the most simple element," Marco Beltrami, composer of "The Homesman" shares. "Finding that element is key to me maybe as just an idiosyncrasy of how I work, it keeps me focused on where I am and how I work and where I'm going."

Music has been a central part of my entire life - yet to this day I've never understood how it all works in terms of its emotional "mechanics".
In Desert Island Discs mode, for me there are three towering influences: The Beatles; Bach, and Handel - they are the big three, without question. And for for those of us who hold the music of The Beatles in the highest esteem, here classical composer Howard Goodall gives us an informed and absorbing account of their musical innovation, their influence, and their lasting legacy.
It's a real privilege to be educated by someone who can express the language of music so eloquently, as classical composer and wider musician. Not everyone is going to agree with him here, but he's persuasive.
I'm looking forward to comments about Howard Goodall's personal survey here; and to kick them off, the thing that struck me most was the idea of "instinctive" compositional talent, and the influence of classically-trained Sir George Martin. I have no idea why Goodall completely ignored George Martin's contribution to the Beatles' musical output: it's a pretty staggering omission. Maybe it would have polluted the populist idea of Everyman, as composer?
Currently this has not been released on DVD or any other purchasable format. I am therefore uploading to my Channel to share musical education with others.
It is available elsewhere on YouTube, but I wanted to draw my Subs' attention to it.
