Arthur "Art" Tatum, Jr. (/ˈteɪtəm/, October 13, 1909 – November 5, 1956) was an American virtuoso jazz pianist.
Tatum is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and was a major influence on later generations of jazz pianists. He was hailed for the technical proficiency of his performances, which set a new standard for jazz piano virtuosity. Critic Scott Yanow wrote, "Tatum's quick reflexes and boundless imagination kept his improvisations filled with fresh (and sometimes futuristic) ideas that put him way ahead of his contemporaries."
For a musician of such stature, there is little published information available about Tatum's life. Only one full-length biography has been published, Too Marvelous for Words (1994), by James Lester. Lester interviewed many of Tatum's contemporaries for the book and drew from many articles published about him.
Tatum was born in Toledo, Ohio. His father, Arthur Tatum, Sr., was a guitarist and an elder at Grace Presbyterian Church, where his mother, Mildred Hoskins, played piano. He had two siblings, Karl and Arlene. From infancy he suffered from cataracts (of disputed cause) which left him blind in one eye and with only very limited vision in the other. A number of surgical procedures improved his eye condition to a degree but some of the benefits were reversed when he was assaulted in 1930.

Raymond Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), professionally known as Ray Charles, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and composer. He was sometimes referred to as "The Genius", and was also nicknamed "The High Priest of Soul".
He pioneered the genre of soul music during the 1950s by combining rhythm and blues, Gospel, and blues styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records. He also contributed to the racial integration of country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his two Modern Sounds albums. While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.
Charles was blind from the age of seven. Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence, but his music was also influenced by jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, and country artists of the day, including Art Tatum, Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, and Louis Armstrong. Charles' playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse, and stride piano styles. He had strong ties to Quincy Jones, who often cared for him and showed him the ropes of the "music club industry."
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, CC, CQ, OOnt (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, but simply "O.P." by his friends. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered to have been one of the greatest jazz pianists, and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.
Peterson was born to immigrants from the West Indies; his father worked as a porter for Canadian Pacific Railway. Peterson grew up in the neighbourhood of Little Burgundy in Montreal, Quebec. It was in this predominantly black neighbourhood that he found himself surrounded by the jazz culture that flourished in the early 20th century. At the age of five, Peterson began honing his skills with the trumpet and piano. However, a bout of tuberculosis when he was seven prevented him from playing the trumpet again, and so he directed all his attention to the piano. His father, Daniel Peterson, an amateur trumpeter and pianist, was one of his first music teachers, and his sister Daisy taught young Oscar classical piano. Young Oscar was persistent at practicing scales and classical études daily, and thanks to such arduous practice he developed his virtuosity.

Art Tatum's Tiger Rag - by Jazz Classics CD feel free to visit www.JakubSacha.com
This is Art Tatum's flawless recording of Tea for Two, recorded in 1933, which was the version that was played during a cutting contest with its two competitors, James P Johnson and Fats Waller. Both Fats Waller and James P. Johnson were blown away when they heard this. Soon after, Tatum played his improvised version of Tiger Rag. James P. Johnson could no longer stand it, so he presented his prearranged stride version of Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, which was perhaps the only thing that could possibly stop this monster. When trying to get your head around this performance by the phenomenal Art Tatum, I would like to mention a few things: 1. his arrangement of "Yesterdays" was pretty much down pat by this stage of his life, so he's improvising around a set structure, not completely improvising the arrangement; 2. in those days, jazz musicians, especially pianists, played gigs just about every day and also practised hard like there was no tomorrow; 3. when all the other kids were out playing ball, he was most p...

Upon not having anywhere to practise or play when I come back to Fayettenam, NC I used an acquaintance to acquire practise room rights at Methodist University to "Get back on the piano" (and an acoustic one at that.) Seems my style has changed drastically in the last few years. Gone is Herbie, Red, and Wynton Kelly. In is the "Early" school, Gershwin, Tatum, and others. Well it was a good workout.
I always wondered how the man's voice sounded... This is taken from a great documentary: 'Art Tatum - The Art of Jazz Piano', with a lot of (uninterrupted!) live footage and interesting interviews...Get it!

Oscar Peterson (1951) -- 0:00 - 3:01 Johnny Costa -- 3:02 - 9:39 Art Tatum -- 9:40 - 12:19 A comparison of a enormously popular jazz standard from the 1925 musical "No, No Nanette". This song has been reharmonized by the likes of Thelonious Monk, Nat "King" Cole, Fats Waller and others. Keep in mind that Art played and developed this song many times, Oscar was greatly influenced by Tatum, and Costa was influenced by both Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson as he said in an interview, though all three have their own personal musical styles. I'm also sad to see there aren't anymore videos on youtube of Johnny Costa, i may have to go download them from itunes and upload them since I see nobody else has.
