Honolulu (/ˌhɒnəˈluːluː/ or /ˌhoʊnəˈluːluː/;Hawaiian pronunciation: [honoˈlulu]) is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is the county seat of the City and County of Honolulu. Hawaii is a major tourist destination and Honolulu, situated on the island of Oahu, is the main gateway to Hawaii and a major gateway into the United States. The city is also a major hub for international business, military defense, as well as famously being host to a diverse variety of east-west and Pacific culture, cuisine, and traditions.
Honolulu is both the westernmost and the southernmost major American city. For statistical purposes, the U.S. Census Bureau recognizes the approximate area commonly referred to as "City of Honolulu" (not to be confused with the "City and County") as a census county division (CCD). Honolulu is a major financial center of the islands and of the Pacific Ocean. The population of Honolulu CCD was 390,738 at the 2010 census, while the population of the consolidated city and county was 953,207.
In United States local government, a consolidated city-county is a city and county that have been merged into one unified jurisdiction. As such it is simultaneously a city, which is a municipal corporation, and a county, which is an administrative division of a state. It has the powers and responsibilities of both types of entities.
A consolidated city-county is different from an independent city, although the latter may result from consolidation of a city and a county and may also have the same powers as a consolidated city-county. An independent city is a city not deemed by its state to be located within the boundary of any county, and recognized by its state as a legal territorial entity separate from surrounding or adjoining counties. Not considering Hawaii, which has no independent cities, the Midwest and Upper South have the highest concentration of large consolidated city-county governments in the United States, including Indianapolis, Indiana; Nashville, Tennessee; Jacksonville, Florida; Louisville, Kentucky; Kansas City, Kansas; and Lexington, Kentucky. Currently, the largest consolidated city-county in the United States by population is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, while the largest by land-area is Sitka, Alaska.

In what is now a familiar site across Honolulu's urban core, a homeless encampment in Iwilei was cleared by the City & County of Honolulu, with support from the Honolulu Police Department and the state Sheriff Division. This homeless camp is located less than a block from the Institute for Human Services, Hawaii's largest homeless services agency. One tent, then several tents, finally semi-permanent structures with furniture eventually pushed pedestrians into the road, and with a new senior high-rise nearing completion across the street, the action was inevitable. 2014-01-10: Updated to note that this action was taken by the City & County of Honolulu, not HPD, which (along with the state Sherriff Division) was on hand "to keep the peace," per the city's communications director Jesse Brod...

INSIGHTS brings together candidates in nonpartisan Council races on two islands. In South Maui, incumbent Dan Couch faces business owner Kelly Takaya King. This race is one of several on Maui that could impact just how pro-development the Maui County Council is. In Central O‘ahu, incumbent District 9 Honolulu City Councilmember Ron Menor and his challenger, Emil Svrcina, have different approaches to the rail transit project. Menor wants to seek different funding sources to lessen taxpayers’ burden; Svrcina wants to cap off the rail at Middle Street. (District 9 covers Waikele, Village Park, Royal Kunia, Mililani Town, West Loch, Iroquois Point and portions of Ewa Villages and Ewa Beach.)

The City and County of Honolulu had the opportunity to cancel its award with Ansaldo when it was discovered that Ansaldo was not legally licensed and not properly registered to do business in the State of Hawaii. Had that transpired, the taxpayers of Honolulu could have saved $234 million right off the bat and got a better, more reputable, more financially sound company to build its rail cars. Instead, the amount of $234 million which was the difference between bidder Ansaldo and Bombardier, can now work its way into the campaign coffers of pro rail hookers to feed the one party political machine here in Hawaii. To get the lowdown on how incompetent the procurement process was and how inept the mayor and HART were in this fiasco - read TOM BERG's resolution 11-248 documenting the corrup...
